The present disclosure relates to thermal contrast therapy devices, treatment methods for providing thermal contrast therapy, and systems for providing and managing thermal contrast therapy treatments. The thermal contrast therapy devices disclosed herein are configured to provide a sequence of alternating cooling periods and heating periods to one or more areas of a patient's body. A thermal contrast therapy device may comprise a source of hot fluid, a source of cold fluid, and one or more pumps configured to circulate fluid through one or more treatment pads in fluid communication with the device. The thermal contrast therapy devices disclosed herein are configured to rapidly and efficiently transition between alternating cooling periods and heating periods.

A thermal contrast therapy device comprising: a cooling system comprising a first pump configured to circulate cold fluid through a cooling block via a cold fluid recirculation line that provides fluid communication with a cooling block inlet, and a heating system comprising a second pump configured to circulate hot fluid through a heating block via a hot fluid recirculation line that provides fluid communication with a heating block inlet;wherein, the first pump is further configured to circulate cold fluid through a treatment pad via an outflow fluid line while the second pump circulates hot fluid through the heating block with at least a portion of said hot fluid bypassing the treatment pad via the hot fluid recirculation line, and the second pump is further configured to circulate hot fluid through the treatment pad via the outflow fluid line while the first pump circulates cold fluid through the cooling block with at least a portion of said cold fluid bypassing the treatment pad via the cold fluid recirculation line, in a sequence of alternating cooling periods and heating periods; anda shared reservoir configured to allow fluid to flow by gravity to:the cooling system via a first supply line providing fluid communication between the cooling system and the shared reservoir, the first supply line configured to allow fluid to flow by gravity to the cooling system in proportion to a corresponding volume of fluid having left the cooling system; andthe heating system via a second supply line providing fluid communication between the heating system and the shared reservoir, the second supply line configured to allow fluid to flow by gravity to the heating system in proportion to a corresponding volume of fluid having left the heating system. 2. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the cooling system further comprises a cold fluid feed line configured to provide fluid communication between a cooling block outlet and the first pump; and/or wherein the heating system further comprises a hot fluid feed line configured to provide fluid communication between a heating block outlet and the second pump. 3. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 2, wherein the cooling system and the heating system converge at an outflow fluid line, the outflow fluid line configured to discharge fluid from the device, the device having an interface configured to provide fluid communication between the outflow fluid line and an external supply line, the external supply line configured to supply fluid from the device to the treatment pad. 4. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 3, wherein the device is configured to supply fluid: from the cooling block to the outflow fluid line via a first fluid path comprising the cold fluid feed line, the first pump, and a cold supply valve; andfrom the heating block to the outflow fluid line via a second fluid path comprising the hot fluid feed line, the second pump, and a hot supply valve, the first fluid path and the second fluid path being separate from one another until their convergence at the outflow fluid line, the point of convergence being downstream from the cold supply valve and the hot supply valve. 5. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 4, wherein said separate first fluid path and second fluid path are effective, at least in part, to allow the device to maintain the temperature of cold fluid discharging from the outflow fluid line within about 2° F. of the temperature at which the cold fluid discharges from the cooling block. 6. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 4, wherein said separate first fluid path and second fluid path are effective, at least in part, to minimize the cumulative thermal mass attributable to components in thermal communication with the fluid between the point of convergence and the interface to less than about 0.1 BTU/° F. 7. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 4, wherein said separate first fluid path and second fluid path are effective, at least in part, to allow the device to maintain the temperature of hot cold fluid discharging from the outflow fluid line within about 2° F. of the temperature at which the hot fluid discharges from the heating block. 8. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 4, wherein said separate first fluid path and second fluid path are effective, at least in part, to allow the device to provide fluid flow through the outflow fluid line at equilibrium temperature with respect to a thermal mass within less than 20 seconds after transition from a heating period to a cooling period, the thermal mass being that which corresponds to components in thermal communication with the fluid between the point of convergence and the interface. 9. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 2, wherein the device is configured to circulate cold fluid through the cooling block during heating periods, via a loop comprising: the cold fluid recirculation line and the cold fluid feed line, and excluding: the shared reservoir, the heating system, and the treatment pad; and/or to circulate hot fluid through the heating block during cooling periods, via a loop comprising: the hot fluid recirculation line and the hot fluid feed line, and excluding: the shared reservoir, the cooling system, and the treatment pad. 10. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the device further comprises: a return fluid line, the return fluid line configured to interface with an external return line, the external return line providing fluid communication between the device and the treatment pad;a temperature sensor configured to ascertain the temperature of the fluid in the return fluid line; andwherein the device is configured to route circulating fluid from the return fluid line either to the heating system and/or the cooling system based, at least in part, on the ascertained temperature. 11. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the shared reservoir is configured to keep the cooling system and the heating system substantially filled with fluid. 12. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the shared reservoir is further configured to receive: fluid from the cooling system via the first supply line, when a volume of fluid from the treatment pad and/or the heating system displaces a corresponding volume of fluid in the cooling system, the first supply line being configured to allow displaced fluid from the cooling system to backflow into the shared reservoir; andfluid from the heating system via the second supply line, when a volume of fluid from the treatment pad and/or the cooling system displaces a corresponding volume of fluid from the heating system, the second supply line being configured to allow displaced fluid from the heating system to backflow into the shared reservoir. 13. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 12, wherein the cooling system further comprises a cold supply valve and the heating system further comprises a hot supply valve; and wherein the device is configured to ascertain the temperature of the fluid returning from the treatment pad and to direct fluid returning from the treatment pad to either the cooling system or the heating system based at least in part on the ascertained temperature. 14. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the shared reservoir is configured to hold a volume of fluid comprising fluid from the cooling system and fluid from the heating system. 15. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the device is configured to cause: upon transition from a cooling period to a heating period, a volume of fluid from the heating system to flow into the treatment pad, thereby displacing a volume of fluid from the treatment pad having been circulated through the treatment pad from the cooling system, the displaced volume of fluid from the treatment pad returning to the cooling system, thereby causing a corresponding volume of fluid to backflow through the first supply line towards the shared reservoir, resulting in a corresponding volume of fluid from the shared reservoir flowing by gravity through the second supply line towards the heating system; andupon transition from a heating period to a cooling period, a volume of fluid from the cooling system to flow into the treatment pad, thereby displacing a volume of fluid from the treatment pad having been circulated through the treatment pad from the heating system, the displaced volume of fluid from the treatment pad returning to the heating system, thereby causing a corresponding volume of fluid to backflow through the second supply line towards the shared reservoir, resulting in a corresponding volume of fluid from the shared reservoir flowing by gravity through the first supply line towards the cooling system. 16. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the fluid communication provided by the first supply line and the second supply line are configured to allow the volume of fluid in the shared reservoir to remain substantially constant during the sequence of alternating cooling periods and heating periods. 17. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the first supply line interfaces with the shared reservoir through a first opening, and the second supply line interfaces with the shared reservoir through a second opening, the first opening located at an elevation below the elevation of the second opening. 18. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 17, wherein the first opening being located at an elevation below the elevation of the second opening is effective, at least in part, to allow stratification of hot fluid and cold fluid in the shared reservoir and for the heating system to preferentially draw stratified hot fluid from the shared reservoir and/or the cooling system to preferentially draw stratified cold fluid from the shared reservoir. 19. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein at least one of the cooling block and the heating block comprise a plurality of baffles defining a serpentine path for fluid travel. 20. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 19, wherein the plurality of baffles comprise one or more baffles having a sloped surface configured to allow air to escape to the shared reservoir. 21. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the cooling system further comprises a first supply valve and a first return valve, and the heating system further comprises a second supply valve and a second return valve, wherein: the first supply valve is configured to cause at least a portion of the fluid from the first pump to circulate through the treatment pad while the second supply valve causes at least a portion of the fluid from the second pump to circulate through the heating block;the second supply valve is configured to cause at least a portion of the fluid from the second pump to circulate through the treatment pad while the first supply valve causes at least a portion of the fluid from the first pump to circulate through the cooling block; andthe first return valve and the second return valve are configured to cause fluid circulating from the return fluid line to be routed either to the cooling system and/or the heating system. 22. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the device is configured to effect a pressure pulse in a treatment pad, the pressure pulse effected at least in part by alternating a valve between opened and closed positions. 23. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 22, wherein the valve comprises a magnetic solenoid valve. 24. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 22, wherein the device is configured to synchronize the frequency of the pressure pulse with the heart rate of a patient receiving treatment. 25. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the device is configured to effect a transition between alternating periods within a duration of between about 5 seconds to 90 seconds, the device being configured to effect the transition within said duration, at least in part, by: the first pump being configured to circulate cold fluid through the cooling block during heating periods so as to provide in the cooling system a volume of fluid having a temperature corresponding to a next subsequent cooling period at least by the end of the then-concluding heating period; andthe second pump being configured to circulate hot fluid through the heating block during cooling periods so as to provide in the heating system a volume of fluid having a temperature corresponding to a next subsequent heating period at least by the end of the then-concluding cooling period. 26. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the device is configured to provide a sequence having one or more periods of between about 15 seconds to 300 seconds. 27. The thermal contrast therapy device of claim 1, wherein the device is configured to provide a sequence comprising a continuous cyclical change in: fluid temperature and/or rate of heat transfer.
