A tabletop converter has a conversion assembly that inwardly gathers and crumples a stock material to form a strip of dunnage. The conversion assembly includes a feeding assembly that moves the stock material and a controller that controls the feeding assembly to operate in both a forward direction and a reverse direction. To automatically separate a discrete dunnage product from the strip, a holder grabs and holds the strip of dunnage at a holding location downstream of the feeding assembly. The feeding assembly then operates in a reverse direction and urges the strip away from the holding location. This causes the strip to separate at or between the holding location and the feeding assembly, leaving a discrete dunnage product ready for use. The converter is mounted to a stand that allows the converter to rotate relative to part of the stand about both a horizontal axis and a vertical axis.

A dunnage converter that converts sheet stock material into relatively lower density dunnage products, comprising: a conversion assembly for converting sheet stock material into a crumpled strip of dunnage, the conversion assembly including a feeding assembly for engaging the strip at a feeding location and moving the stock material through the converter;wherein the restraining device includes a stop member movable between a first position permitting passage of the dunnage strip in a forward direction and a second position inhibits significant reverse movement of the stock material at a location upstream of the feeding location such that the feeding assembly will engage the stock material upon feeding in the forward direction once again;wherein the stop member is moved to its first position by the stock material passing thereby during forward feeding of the stock material by the feeding assembly, and the stop member is moved to its second position by a binding engagement with the stock material when the stock material is moved in a reverse direction by the feeding assembly;a restraining device upstream of the feeding assembly that allows the stock material to pass in a forward direction and restricts significant movement of the stock material in a reverse direction at a holding location spaced upstream of the feeding assembly such that the feeding assembly will engage the stock material upon feeding in the forward direction once again;wherein an entry guide chute is provided to constrain the stock material as it passes to the feeding assembly, and the stop member extends into the entry guide chute for engaging the stock material;a controller that controls the feeding assembly to move the stock material there through in a forward downstream direction for conversion into the strip of dunnage and in a reverse upstream direction to clear a jam in the conversion assembly or to separate a dunnage product from the strip at a location at or between the holding location and the feeding assembly; andwherein the stop member coacts with an opposed surface of the entry guide chute to pinch the stock material therebetween when the stock material is moved in a reverse direction by the feeding assembly. 2. A dunnage converter as set forth in claim 1, wherein the controller directs the feeding assembly to operate in a reverse direction by a preset amount. 3. A dunnage converter as set forth in claim 1, wherein the entry guide chute is tubular and has a slot through which the stop member extends into the interior of the entry guide chute. 4. A dunnage converter as set forth in claim 1, wherein the entry guide chute forms part of a forming assembly located upstream of the feeding assembly for gathering and crumpling the stock material to form the strip of dunnage. 5. A dunnage converter as set forth in claim 4, wherein the forming assembly includes a gathering chute with converging surfaces that inwardly gathers and crumples the stock material. 6. A dunnage converter as set forth in claim 5, wherein the gathering chute has an oval inlet and a funnel shape. 7. A dunnage converter as set forth in claim 1, wherein the feeding assembly includes at least one rotatable feed member. 8. A dunnage converter as set forth in claim 1, wherein the feeding assembly includes a pair of opposed feed members. 9. A dunnage converter as set forth in claim 8, wherein the opposed feed members each include grippers that cooperate to grip and feed the stock material there between. 10. A dunnage converter as set forth in claim 1, in combination with a stock material having longitudinally spaced-apart weakened areas that extend across the width of the stock material. 11. A dunnage converter as set forth in claim 10, wherein the weakened areas are formed by perforations. 12. A dunnage converter that converts sheet stock material into relatively lower density dunnage products, comprising: a conversion assembly for converting sheet stock material into a crumpled strip of dunnage, the conversion assembly including a feeding assembly for engaging the strip at a feeding location and moving the stock material through the converter; wherein the restraining device includes a stop member movable between a first position permitting passage of the dunnage strip in a forward direction and a second position inhibits significant reverse movement of the stock material at a location upstream of the feeding location such that the feeding assembly will engage the stock material upon feeding in the forward direction once again;wherein the stop member is moved to its first position by the stock material passing thereby during forward feeding of the stock material by the feeding assembly, and the stop member is moved to its second position by a binding engagement with the stock material when the stock material is moved in a reverse direction by the feeding assembly;a restraining device upstream of the feeding assembly that allows the stock material to pass in a forward direction and restricts significant movement of the stock material in a reverse direction at a holding location spaced upstream of the feeding assembly such that the feedings assembly will engage the stock material upon feeding in the forward direction once again;wherein an entry guide chute is provided to constrain the stock material as it passes to the feeding assembly, and the stop member extends into the entry guide chute for engaging the stock material; a controller that controls the feeding assembly to move the stock material there through in a forward downstream direction for conversion into the strip of dunnage and in a reverse upstream direction to clear a jam in the conversion assembly or to separate a dunnage product from the strip at a location at or between the holding location and the feeding assembly;wherein the stop member coacts with an opposed surface of the entry guide chute to pinch the stock material therebetween when the stock material is moved in a reverse direction by the feeding assembly; andinlet and outlet guide chutes that guide the stock material to and from the feeding assembly. 13. A dunnage converter as set forth in claim 12, wherein the guide chutes are tubular. 14. A dunnage converter that converts a sheet stock material into a relatively lower density dunnage product, comprising: a conversion assembly that converts a sheet stock material into a crumpled strip of dunnage, the conversion assembly including a feeding assembly for engaging the sheet stock material and moving the sheet stock material in a forward downstream direction or a backward upstream direction; anda one-way check valve upstream of the feeding assembly that allows sheet stock material to flow in a downstream direction through the check valve but inhibits the stock material from flowing in an upstream direction through the check valve where the check valve includes a guide chute that defines a path for the sheet stock material and a pivotally-mounted stop arm that extends through the guide chute into the path of the sheet stock material. 15. A dunnage converter as set forth in claim 14, where the stop arm is biased by gravity into a position in the path of the sheet stock material.
