A surgical stapler including a hollow shaft and a tube slidable axially within the shaft between a forward position, where one end of the tube projects beyond a free end of the shaft to enter a puncture site in a blood vessel and a rearward position, where the end of the locator tube is retracted within the shaft. A surgical staple straddles the tube and is slidable thereon forwardly towards an anvil against which the staple may be deformed to staple together the opposite edges of the puncture site. A cam mechanism drives the staple forwardly along the tube into deforming engagement with the anvil and at the same time retracts the tube into the shaft in time to allow the legs of the staple to close onto the puncture site.

1. A tissue stapler, comprising an elongated shaft having an inside dimension;an elongated rod with a staple former coupled to a distal end of said rod, said rod and said staple former being sized to fit within said inside dimension of said shaft;a staple adapted to fit within said shaft, said staple having a plurality of legs extending from a body, said body having a gap, said staple being plastically deformable from a pre-deployed configuration to a plastically deformed deployed configuration;a first member slidable within said elongated shaft and through said gap of said staple, said body of said staple straddling said first member with a portion of a distal end of said first member extending through said gap in a direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of said first member, the first member configured to receive a guidewire through a lumen of the first member; andan actuator mechanism to move said rod relative to said shaft and to move said first member relative to said shaft and said staple, said actuator mechanism adapted to move said rod relative to said staple and said shaft plastically deforming said staple and causing said staple to close on tissue located about a wound site. 2. The tissue stapler of claim 1, wherein said staple former causes said staple legs to contract inward thereby deploying said staple into the tissue. 3. The tissue stapler of claim 1, further comprising a bleedback lumen. 4. The tissue stapler of claim 1, wherein said staple is deformed by said staple former and a projection. 5. The tissue stapler of claim 4, wherein said projection is an anvil. 6. The tissue stapler of claim 4, wherein said staple is deformed around said projection. 7. A tissue stapler, comprising an elongated shaft having an inside dimension;an elongated rod with a staple former coupled to the distal end of said rod, said rod and staple former sized to fit within said inside dimension of said shaft;a staple adapted to fit within said shaft, said staple having a plurality of legs connected by a base having a gap, a pair of said plurality of legs defining a plane, said base extending from said pair of legs transverse from said plane, said staple being plastically deformable from a pre-deployed configuration to a plastically deformed deployed configuration;a first member slidable within said elongated shaft and relative to a base of said staple, said base of said staple straddling said first member with a distal end of said first member extending through said gap in a direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of said first member and being unstraddled by a portion of said body of said staple in said direction, the first member configured to receive a guidewire through a lumen of the first member; andan actuator mechanism to move said rod relative to said shaft and to move said first member relative to said shaft and said staple, said actuator mechanism adapted to move said rod relative to said staple and said shaft plastically deforming said staple and causing said staple to close on tissue located about a wound site. 8. The tissue stapler of claim 7, wherein said staple former causes said staple legs to contract inward thereby deploying said staple into the tissue. 9. The tissue stapler of claim 7, further comprising a bleedback lumen. 10. The tissue stapler of claim 7, wherein said staple is deformed by said staple former and a projection. 11. The tissue stapler of claim 10, wherein said projection is an anvil. 12. The tissue stapler of claim 10, wherein said staple is plastically deformed around said projection. 13. The tissue staple of claim 7, said pair of legs being substantially bilaterally symmetrical. 14. A tissue stapler, comprising an elongated shaft having an inside dimension;an elongated rod with a staple former coupled to the distal end of said rod, said rod and staple former sized to fit within said inside dimension of said shaft;a staple adapted to fit within said shaft, said staple having a pair of legs connected by a U-shaped base, said U-shaped base defining a plane, one of said pair of legs extending transverse to said plane, said staple being plastically deformable from a pre-deployed configuration to a plastically deformed deployed configuration;a first member slidable within said elongated shaft and through at least a portion of said staple, a base of said staple receiving a portion of said first member with a distal end of said first member extending through said U-shaped base in a direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of said first member and with a portion of said first member being unstraddled by the body of said staple, the first member configured to receive a guidewire through a lumen of the first member; andan actuator mechanism to move said rod relative to said shaft and to move said first member relative to said shaft and said staple, said actuator mechanism adapted to move said rod relative to said staple and said shaft plastically deforming said staple and causing said staple to close on tissue located about a wound site. 15. The tissue stapler of claim 14, wherein said staple former causes said staple legs to contract inward thereby deploying said staple into the tissue. 16. The tissue stapler of claim 14, further comprising a bleedback lumen. 17. The tissue stapler of claim 14, wherein said staple is deformed by said staple former and a projection. 18. The tissue stapler of claim 17, wherein said projection is an anvil. 19. The tissue stapler of claim 17, wherein said staple is plastically deformed around said projection. 20. The tissue staple of claim 14, said pair of tines being substantially bilaterally symmetrical.
