Systems, devices and methods to improve safety and efficiency in an operating room comprise providing a suture package that holds new suture needles and needle receptacles for storing used needles. The devices can be safely worn for the surgeon to self-dispense new suture needles in the near surgical field and to secure the used needles into a needle trap or a needle retainer located on his extremity, on his operative instruments or on the surgical drapes. The device may provide automated and/or simplified needle counting both during use and after removal from the surgical field. The device may be configured for ergonomic and efficient use so as to minimize the actions and motions of the surgeon to dispense and secure the needle.

1. A method for handling suture needles, the method comprising: providing a needle receptacle comprising an upper structure and a lower structure coupled together to form a needle slot therebetween, the needle slot having an opening to receive a plurality of suture needles;placing each of the plurality of suture needles through the opening and along an array within the needle slot, wherein the plurality of suture needles is placed in the array with both ends of each suture needle of the array secured between the upper structure and the lower structure, wherein said each suture needle of the array is visible for counting. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein a tip of said each of the plurality of suture needle is oriented away from a surgeon during the placing step. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the placing comprises placing said each of the plurality of suture needles through the opening and along the array within the needle slot without an external rotation of an arm of a surgeon. 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising cutting a suture attached to said each of the plurality of suture needles with one hand, using a cutter disposed in a near surgical field. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein placing the each of the plurality of suture needles along the array comprises immobilizing both ends of said each suture needle of the array between the upper structure and the lower structure. 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising counting the plurality of suture needles disposed within the needle slot. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the upper structure comprises a needle driver slot, and wherein placing each of the plurality of suture needles along the array comprises translating a tip of a needle driver holding said each suture needle along the needle driver slot, thereby advancing said each suture needle along the needle slot into the array. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein placing each of the plurality of suture needles along the array comprises placing said each of the plurality of suture needles in a parallel array. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein placing each of the plurality of suture needles along the array comprises placing said each of the plurality of suture needles in a single needle depth array. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the needle receptacle further comprises one or more members located within the needle slot, and wherein the method further comprises applying a side load with the one or more members to said each suture needle of the array within the needle slot, to prevent unintentional removal or dislodging of the plurality of suture needles arranged along the array. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein said each of the plurality of suture needles remains within a near surgical field during the placing. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the near surgical field is bounded by a length extending from a front side of a torso of the surgeon to an incision, a width extending between forearms of the surgeon in a neutral rotation position and a height extending vertically from a height of the incision to shoulders of the surgeon. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the near surgical field comprises a space disposed within one or more of about 2 feet of the incision, 1.5 feet of the incision or about 1 foot of the incision. 14. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing one or more suture packages comprising the plurality of suture needles, and grasping each of the plurality of suture needles with a needle driver to dispense said each suture needle from the one or more suture packages. 15. The method of claim 14 , wherein said each dispensed suture needle is attached to a suture, and the method further comprises installing the suture into a patient with the dispensed suture needle and a needle driver. 16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the one or more suture packages and the needle receptacle are arranged for a surgeon to perform the steps of grasping and placing with one hand. 17. The method of claim 1, wherein the needle receptacle is mounted on a platform supported by a surgeon, and wherein the method further comprises coupling the platform to a limb of the surgeon. 18. The method of claim 17, wherein coupling the platform to a limb of the surgeon comprises placing the platform over a volar portion of a forearm of the surgeon. 19. The method of claim 17, wherein coupling the platform to the limb of the surgeon comprises: providing legs that extend from sides of the platform; andengaging the legs on the limb of the surgeon to stabilize the platform on the limb of the surgeon. 20. The method of claim 17, further comprising coupling the needle receptacle to the platform.
