An improved dynamic longitudinal connecting member includes a rod portion joined with a tensioned cord portion, for use in a medical implant assembly having at least two bone attachment structures, a spacer covering the join of the rod and cord portions and extending between the at least two bone attachment structures, a sleeve, a bumper and a cord blocker. A medical implant assembly having two bone attachment structures cooperating with a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end;ii) a rod portion extending longitudinally from the first end to the transition portion along a longitudinal axis and running substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis;iii) a tensionable cord portion joined with the rod portion and extending from the transition portion to the second end;iv) a substantially elastic spacer portion positioned between the two bone attachment structures;v) an elastic bumper surrounding and in slidable relation with the tensionable cord portion; andvi) a blocker, the blocker being releasable such that the tensionable cord portion can be re-tensioned. 2. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the tensionable cord portion includes a sleeve within at least one bone attachment structure. 3. The assembly of claim 2, wherein the spacer overlaps a portion of the sleeve positioned within the bone attachment structure. 4. The assembly of claim 2, wherein the sleeve includes a through-bore in sliding engagement with the cord portion. 5. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the cord portion is in tension. 6. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the cord portion includes a plurality of substantially elastic strands extending from about the transition portion towards the second end. 7. The assembly of claim 6, wherein the strands are braided. 8. The assembly of claim 6, wherein the strands are woven. 9. The assembly of claim 6, wherein the strands are random. 10. The assembly of claim 6, wherein the strands are embedded in an elastomer. 11. The assembly of claim 6, wherein the strands include a polymer. 12. The assembly of claim 6, wherein the strands include a mixture of a polymer and a plurality of at least one of fibers and filaments. 13. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the cord portion comprises a substantially elastic polymer filament. 14. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the cord portion comprises a flexible polymer. 15. The assembly of claim 14, wherein the flexible polymer includes a substantially elastic polymer. 16. The assembly of claim 14, wherein the flexible polymer includes a composite of two polymers. 17. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the cord portion includes an elastic cable. 18. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the cord portion includes an elastic cord. 19. A medical implant assembly having first, second and third bone attachment structures with closures to capture a dynamic longitudinal connecting member wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end;ii) the first end includes a rod portion extending longitudinally from the transition portion and secured to the first and second bone attachment structures;iii) the second end includes a cord portion joined with the rod portion at the transition portion and extending longitudinally therefrom and entirely through the third bone attachment structure; andiv) a substantially elastic spacer portion positioned between the second and third bone attachment structures; andv) an elastic bumper surrounding and in slidable relation with the tensionable cord portion; andvi) a blocker having a releasable set screw secured to the cord portion near the second end, the releasable set screw being releasable such that the cord portion can be re-tensioned when the cord remains captured by the bone attachment closures. 20. The assembly according to claim 19, wherein: a) the bumper engages the third bone attachment structure. 21. The assembly according to claim 19, wherein: a) the bumper engages a sleeve attached to the third bone attachment structure. 22. The assembly according to claim 19, wherein: a) the blocker engages the bumper in an overlapping relationship. 23. A medical implant assembly having first and second bone attachment structures cooperating with a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end; wherein the first end includes a substantially solid rod portion having a longitudinal axis, the solid rod portion extending coaxially from the first end to a transition portion; and the second end includes a tensionable cord portion joined with the rod portion at the transition portion, the tensionable cord portion extending from the transition portion coaxially through a respective bone attachment structure to the second end;ii) a sleeve positioned and secured within the second bone attachment structure and surrounding the cord portion; andiii) a spacer surrounding the cord portion; wherein the first bone attachment structure is secured to the substantially solid rod portion, the spacer is positioned between the first and second bone attachment structures, the spacer partially overlaps the sleeve. 24. A medical implant assembly having first and second bone attachment structures cooperating with a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end;ii) a rod portion extending longitudinally from the first end to the transition portion along a longitudinal axis and a substantially solid central portion running substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis;iii) a tensionable cord portion joined with the rod portion and extending from the transition portion partially to the second end; andiv) a substantially elastic spacer portion covering the transition portion. 25. A medical implant assembly having first and second bone attachment structures with closures to capture a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end;ii) the first end includes a rod portion extending longitudinally from the transition portion and secured to the first bone attachment structure;iii) the second end includes a cord portion joined with the rod portion at the transition portion and extending longitudinally therefrom and entirely through the second bone attachment structure in a direction toward the connecting member first end;iv) a substantially elastic spacer portion positioned entirely between the first and second bone attachment structures;v) an elastic bumper surrounding and in slidable relation with the tensionable cord portion; andvi) a blocker having a releasable set screw secured to the cord portion near the second end, the releasable set screw being releasable such that the cord portion can be re-tensioned when the cord remains captured by the bone attachment closures. 26. The assembly of claim 25, and including: a) the blocker having an internal drive opening onto a top surface thereof, such that the set screw engages and secures to the cord portion. 27. A medical implant assembly having two bone attachment structures cooperating with a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end;ii) a rod portion extending longitudinally from the first end to the transition portion along a longitudinal axis and running substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis;iii) a tensionable cord portion joined with the rod portion and extending from the transition portion to the second end; andiv) a substantially elastic spacer covering the rod and cord portions. 28. The assembly of claim 27, wherein the rod portion includes a plurality of substantially stiff, and longitudinally extending rodlets. 29. A medical implant assembly having first, second, and third bone attachment structures with closures to capture a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end; wherein the first end includes a substantially solid rod portion having an axis and extending longitudinally from the transition portion, the rod portion secured to the first bone attachment structure; and the second end includes a tensionable cord portion joined with the rod portion at the transition portion and extending from a position within the transition portion coaxially and longitudinally therefrom, the tensionable cord portion connected between the second and third bone attachment structures;ii) a sleeve surrounding the cord portion and secured within the third bone attachment structure;iii) a spacer surrounding the cord portion and positioned between the second and third bone attachment structures;iv) an elastic bumper surrounding and in slidable relation with the tensionable cord portion; andv) a blocker having a releasable set screw secured to the cord portion near the second end, the releasable set screw being releasable such that the cord portion can be re-tensioned when the cord remains captured by the bone attachment closures. 30. A medical implant assembly having two bone attachment structures with closures to capture a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end, the transition portion being positioned entirely between the bone attachment structures;ii) a rigid portion extending from the first end to the transition portion along a longitudinal axis, the rigid portion being connected to one of the bone attachment structures;iii) a tensionable cord portion extending from the rigid portion to the second end and joined with the rigid portion at the transition portion, the tensionable cord portion being connected between the two bone attachment structures;iv) a substantially elastic spacer covering the rod portion and the transition portion;iv) an elastic bumper surrounding and in slidable relation with the tensionable cord portion; andv) a blocker having a releasable set screw secured to the cord portion near the second end, the releasable set screw being releasable such that the cord portion can be re-tensioned when the cord remains captured by the bone attachment closures. 31. A medical implant assembly having first and second bone attachment structures cooperating with a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end;ii) a rigid portion extending longitudinally from the first end to the transition portion, and including a longitudinal axis;iii) a flexible portion extending from the transition portion to the second end and joined with the rigid portion at the transition portion; whereiniv) the flexible portion extends entirely through the second bone attachment structure and the transition portion, the transition portion being positioned at least partially outside of the first bone attachment structure, the mating of the flexible portion with the rigid portion forming the transition portion. 32. A medical implant assembly having two bone attachment structures with closures to capture a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end, the transition portion being partially positioned between the bone attachment structures;ii) a rigid portion extending longitudinally from the first end to the transition portion along a longitudinal axis;iii) a tensionable flexible portion extending from the transition portion to the second end and joined with the rigid portion at the transition portion;iv) a substantially elastic spacer partially covering the transition portion and the flexible portion, and the flexible portion is in slidable engagement with the spacer; whereinv) a blocker is attached to the flexible portion at the second end and secured thereto by a releasable set screw, the releasable set screw being releasable such that the cord portion can be re-tensioned when the cord remains captured by the bone attachment closures. 33. A medical implant assembly having two bone attachment structures cooperating with a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a portion with substantially inelastic section having a first end and a portion with an elastic section having a second end;ii) the substantially inelastic section extending from the elastic section along a longitudinal axis, the substantially inelastic section secured to a respective bone attachment structure, the elastic section extending through the other respective bone attachment structure;iii) a spacer having an inner bore that surrounds the elastic section, and positioned between the two bone attachment structures;iv) a sleeve secured to the other respective bone attachment structure, the elastic section in slidable relation with the sleeve, the sleeve having a protrusion, the protrusion being overlapped by the spacer; andv) an end blocker secured to the elastic section. 34. A medical implant assembly having two bone attachment structures cooperating with a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end;ii) a solid rod portion extending from the first end to the transition portion along longitudinal axis;iii) a cord portion joined with the rod portion and extending from the transition portion and through only one of the bone attachment structures to the second end; andiv) an elastic spacer covering at least partially the transition and cord portions. 35. The assembly of claim 34, further comprising a sleeve located between the cord portion and one of the bone attachment structures, and secured to one of the bone attachment structures. 36. A medical implant assembly having two bone attachment structures with respective closures to capture a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the connecting member comprises: i) a rod portion secured to one of the two bone attachment structures and running substantially parallel with a longitudinal axis;ii) a tensionable cord portion joined with the rod portion and in slidable relationship with one of the two bone attachment structures;iii) an elastic bumper surrounding the cord adjacent to one of the two bone attachment structures;iv) a cord blocker surrounding the cord adjacent to the bumper and secured to the cord by a releasable set screw, the releasable set screw being releasable such that the cord portion can be re-tensioned when the cord remains captured by the bone attachment closures; andv) a substantially elastic spacer portion surrounding the cord and positioned in between the two bone attachment structures and located on an opposed side of one of the two bone attachment structures with respect to the bumper and blocker. 37. A medical implant assembly having first, second, and third bone attachment structures with closures to capture a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end; wherein the first end includes a substantially solid rod portion extending away from the transition portion and the second end includes a tensionable cord portion joined with the rod portion at the transition portion and extending from the transition portion in a direction opposite from the rod portion toward the second end;ii) a sleeve positioned within the third bone attachment structure and surrounding the cord portion;iii) a spacer surrounding the cord portion; wherein the first bone attachment structure is secured to the rod portion, the spacer is positioned between the second and third bone attachment structures, the sleeve is secured to the third bone attachment structure and the spacer and the sleeve are in an overlapping relationship;iv) a bumper surrounding and in slidable relation with the tensionable cord portion and being positioned opposite to the spacer;v) an end blocker being positioned against the bumper, the blocker including a releasable set screw so as to engage and be secured on the tensionable cord portion, the releasable set screw being releasable such that the cord portion can be re-tensioned when the cord remains captured by the bone attachment closures. 38. A medical implant assembly having first and second bone attachment structures with closures to capture a dynamic longitudinal connecting member, wherein the assembly comprises: a) the connecting member, the connecting member comprises: i) a first end, a transition portion and a second end;ii) a rod portion extending longitudinally from the first end to the transition portion along a longitudinal axis and being substantially rigid;iii) a tensionable cord portion joined with the rod portion and extending from the transition portion to the second end and being flexible;iv) an elastic spacer portion partially covering the transition portion and positioned between the first and second bone attachment structures;v) an elastic bumper surrounding and in slidable relation with the tensionable cord portion; andvi) a blocker engaging and secured to the tensionable cord portion by a releasable set screw, the releasable set screw being releasable such that the cord portion can be re-tensioned when the cord remains captured by the bone attachment closures.
