According to various embodiments, a reaction device is placed in an environment in order to perform a chemical reaction in an environment. Exemplary environments include a body of an organism, a body of water, or an enclosed volume of a fluid. In selected embodiments, a magnetic field, an electric field, or electromagnetic control signal may be used.

The reaction device of claim 3, wherein exposure of additional portions of the reaction region exposes additional functional groups on the reaction region to produce at least a local change in pH. 5. The reaction device of claim 3, wherein exposure of additional portions of the reaction region exposes additional functional groups on the reaction region to produce at least a local change in surface energy. 6. The reaction device of claim 3, wherein exposure of additional portions of the reaction region exposes additional functional groups on the reaction region to produce at least a local change in surface charge. 7. The reaction device of claim 1, wherein a volume containing the reaction region within the interior portion of the body structure is increased responsive to the change in at least one dimension of the remotely activatable control element. 8. The reaction device of claim 1, wherein the remotely activatable control element includes at least one of a shape memory material or a bimetallic structure. 9. A reaction device comprising: a body structure adapted for positioning in an environment;a reaction region located within the body structure on an inner surface of the reaction device or on the exterior of the body structure and operably coupled thereto, the reaction region including a first material located at and operably coupled to the reaction region and capable of influencing a chemical reaction at the reaction region; anda remotely activatable control element physically coupled to the reaction region and responsive to input of energy from an electromagnetic field control signal by changing in at least one dimension to produce a corresponding change in dimension of the reaction region, to modify thereby one or more of the rate or kinetics of the chemical reaction at the reaction region through at least one of a mechanical, thermal or chemical mechanism, wherein the remotely activatable control element includes at least one of a shape memory material or a bimetallic structure, and wherein additional portions of the reaction region are exposed responsive to the change in at least one dimension of the remotely activatable control element. 10. The reaction device of claim 9, wherein a surface area of the reaction region is increased responsive to the change in at least one dimension of the remotely activatable control element. 11. The reaction device of claim 10, wherein the surface area of the reaction area is increased by stretching of at least a portion of the reaction area. 12. The reaction device of claim 10, wherein the surface area of the reaction area is increased by unfolding of at least a portion of the reaction area to expose additional portions of the reaction area. 13. The reaction device of claim 9, wherein a volume containing the reaction region within the interior portion of the body structure is modified responsive to the change in at least one dimension of the remotely activatable control element. 14. The reaction device of claim 9, wherein exposure of additional portions of the reaction region exposes additional functional groups to produce at least a local change in osmolality. 15. The reaction system of claim 19, wherein the volume of a reaction space containing the reaction region within the interior portion of the body structure is modified responsive to the change in at least one dimension of the remotely activatable control element. 21. The reaction system of claim 19, wherein said remote control signal source includes at least one of hardware, firmware, or software configured to control generation of the electromagnetic control signal.
