The pressure plate may be rotatable around a longitudinal axis of the rod according to the size of a mold half mounted to the platen. The platen assembly may have at least one platen support mounted to the platen. The at least one platen support may be rotatably mounted to the mold clamp. The at least one platen support can be rotated according to the size of a mold half mounted to the platen. The adjustable platen provides support to the mold half to reduce the amount of deformation to the mold half that is caused by the application of a closing force.

A platen assembly for use with a mold clamp, the mold clamp having a rod which interacts with the platen assembly, the platen assembly comprising: a platen;a pressure plate attached to the platen, the pressure plate being rotatable around a longitudinal axis of the rod;at least one platen support mounted to the platen, the at least one platen support being rotatably mounted to the mold clamp;whereby the pressure plate and the at least one platen support can be rotated according to the size of a mold half mounted to the platen, so that positioning of the at least one platen support and cooperation of the at least one platen support with the rod provides a support structure proximate the perimeter of the platen and mold half to prevent bowing or distortion of the mold half. 2. The platen assembly as recited in claim 1, wherein the at least one platen support is a pair of platen supports, with one platen support positioned on either side of pressure plate. 3. The platen assembly as recited in claim 2, wherein a support bracket is provided opposite the platen, the support bracket being mounted to the platen supports, whereby the support bracket acts as a stiffener to increase the stability of the platen supports, enhance the ability of the platen supports to resist the bowing forces and increase the load transmission capabilities of the platen supports. 4. The platen assembly as recited in claim 2, wherein the platen supports are rotatably mounted respective mounting rods of the mold clamp. 5. The platen assembly as recited in claim 4, wherein the platen supports are mounted on the respective mounting rods through mounting openings of the platen supports, bearings being positioned adjacent the mounting openings. 6. The platen assembly as recited in claim 1, wherein a spring pack is attached to a pressure plate, the spring pack rotatable around the longitudinal axis of the rod, whereby a predetermined limit in closing pressure that is applied by the pressure plate can be imposed. 7. A method of assembling a platen assembly for use with a mold clamp, the mold clamp having a rod which interacts with the platen assembly, the method comprising: determining the size of mold half to be used;adjusting components of the platen assembly to conform to the size of the mold half;attaching a platen to the components;installing a support bracket on respective components of the platen assembly;applying a force;whereby the adjusted platen assembly cooperates with the mold half to reduce deformation to the mold half that is caused by the application of the force. 8. The method of assembling a platen assembly as recited in claim 7, further comprising positioning platen supports and securing the platen supports to the platen, whereby platen supports can be rotated according to the size of a mold half mounted to the platen to a support structure proximate the perimeter of the platen and mold half to prevent the bowing or distortion of the mold half. 9. The method of assembling a platen assembly as recited in claim 7, further comprising installing the support bracket on the platen supports, whereby the support bracket acts as a stiffener to increase the stability of the platen supports, enhance the ability of the platen supports to resist the bowing forces and increase the load transmission capabilities of the platen supports. 10. The method of assembling a platen assembly as recited in claim 7, further comprising rotating the pressure plate to conform to the size of the mold half and apply the force to a pressure plate, whereby the forces applied to the pressure plate are distributed to the platen and to a mold half over a large surface area to reduce the amount of deformation to the mold half that is caused by the application of the force. 11. The method of assembling a platen assembly as recited in claim 10, further positioning a spring pack adjacent the pressure plate, whereby a predetermined limit in force that is applied by the pressure plate can be imposed. 12. The method of assembling a platen assembly as recited in claim 7, further comprising selecting the proper size platen prior to attaching the platen to the components. 13. A platen assembly for use with a mold clamp, the platen assembly comprising: a platen;platen supports mounted to the platen, the platen supports being rotatably mounted to the mold clamp; the platen supports can be rotated according to the size of a mold half mounted to the platen, so that positioning of the platen supports provide a support structure proximate the perimeter of the platen and mold half to prevent bowing or distortion of the mold half;a support bracket mounted to the platen supports when the platen supports are rotated to a proper position, the support bracket acts as a stiffener to increase the stability of the platen supports, enhance the ability of the platen supports to resist pg,21 the bowing forces and increase the load transmission capabilities of the platen supports.
