The thermostat of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to repeatedly broadcast a query on the wireless local area network requesting a response from the particular mobile wireless device. 3. The thermostat of claim 2, wherein the particular mobile wireless device provides a response to the query when the particular mobile wireless device is connected to the network host device and part of the wireless local area network, and does not provide a response to the query when the particular mobile wireless device is not connected to the network host device and/or not part of the wireless local area network. 4. The thermostat of claim 1, wherein the network host device comprises an access point that is remote from the thermostat. 5. The thermostat of claim 1, wherein the wireless local area network is an ad-hoc wireless network. 6. The thermostat of claim 1, wherein the network host device does not have a local DNS server. 7. The thermostat of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to detect if the particular mobile wireless device is currently connected to the network host device and part of the wireless local area network using, at least in part, a multitask DNS or a Link-local Multicast Name Resolution (LLMNR) algorithm. 8.
