Surgical devices for stabilizing the heart are disclosed which facilitate anastomosis under beating heart conditions. Various instruments or devices may be maneuvered and secured on a retractor device to provide stabilization of the heart. An instrument mount is provided which is preferably configured to accept a surgical instrument, such as a tissue stabilizer, and to allow the instrument to be easily maneuvered to a desired position and subsequently locked into position with a simple operation of a single locking actuator. Further disclosed are stabilizer devices each having at least one surface for contacting the heart and each being adapted to be mounted to the retractor while having the ability to be positioned in the desired location against the heart.

1. A method for stabilizing a portion of a patient's heart, said method comprising the steps of: manipulating a stabilizer to apply a stabilizing force to a surface of the heart, wherein the stabilizer is connected and movably mounted to a stable support;positioning a suture under tensile load within a slot of the stable support wherein the slot is bifurcated; andlocking a portion of the suture against a wall defining the slot using a suture locking member, wherein the suture locking member comprises a pivotable body having a pivoting end attached to the stable support and a free end extending into the slot and wherein the locking step comprises engaging and urging the suture against the wall with the free end, and wherein the suture is positioned under tensile load in one bifurcation or the other bifurcation of the bifurcated slot. 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the steps of: fixing a position of an instrument mount assembly with respect to the stable support, wherein the instrument mount assembly is mounted to the stable support; andfixing a position of the stabilizer applying the stabilizing force with respect to said instrument mount assembly, wherein the stabilizer is movably mounted to the instrument mount assembly. 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the stable support is a retractor, and wherein said method further comprises positioning said stabilizer by sliding said instrument mount assembly along a length of a portion of said retractor. 4. The method of claim 2, wherein said step of fixing the position of said instrument mount assembly is carried out prior to said step of manipulating the stabilizer. 5. The method of claim 2, further comprising placing at least one articulating joint of said instrument mount assembly in an intermediate position, prior to said step of fixing the position of said stabilizer, wherein the at least one articulating joint situated in the intermediate position is capable of moving, under greater resistance than when the articulating joint is situated in a free state, allowing continued manipulation of said stabilizer. 6. A method for applying force to a heart, wherein the method comprises the steps of: positioning a base member of an instrument mount assembly on a portion of a retractor;positioning a medical instrument connected to the base member via a body member of the instrument mount assembly; andadjusting the medical instrument along three rotational degrees of freedom with respect to the base member via rotation of at least one rotational joint disposed between the base member and the medical instrument so as to orient the medical instrument to achieve contact with the heart, wherein the rotational joint is a ball joint with a base post extending through the ball joint and the body member comprises a socket of the ball joint so that adjustment of the medical instrument along three rotational degrees of freedom with respect to the base member is achieved via rotation along three rotational degrees of freedom of the at least one rotational joint, and the base post is biasable against the base member to lock the ball joint at a position corresponding to the adjusted three rotational degrees of freedom. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the medical instrument is a stabilizer attached to the instrument mount assembly and wherein the method further comprises the step of positioning the stabilizer to apply a stabilizing force to a surface of the heart. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the step of applying a stabilizing force further comprises applying a sufficient amount of force to the surface of a beating heart to substantially eliminate movement of the heart. 9. The method of claim 7, wherein the method further comprises the step of performing an anastomosis upon securing the stabilizer relative to the instrument mount assembly and the portion of the retractor in a position that applies a stabilizing force to the heart. 10. The method of claim 7, wherein the stabilizer comprises an elongated stem and a substantially rigid base member located at a distal end of the stem, wherein the substantially rigid base member is adapted to contact the heart and wherein the method comprises the step of adjusting the stem. 11. The method of claim 7, wherein the stabilizer comprises an elongated stem and a substantially rigid base member located at a distal end of the stem, wherein the substantially rigid base member is adapted to contact the heart and wherein the method further comprises positioning a friction member positioned on a surface of the substantially rigid base member on the heart to facilitate tissue gripping. 12. The method of claim 6, further comprising the step of selectively locking a position of the instrument mount assembly relative to the portion of the retractor. 13. The method of claim 6, further comprising the step of positioning and locking a portion of one or more sutures within one or more slots of the retractor. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the step of locking comprises self-locking the suture within the slot in one direction when the suture is positioned within the slot. 15. The method of claim 6, wherein the instrument mount assembly further comprises a second articulating joint and wherein the method further comprises the step of adjusting the position of the medical instrument relative to the instrument mount assembly about the second articulating joint. 16. The method of claim 6, further comprising the step of removably coupling the medical instrument to the instrument mount assembly. 17. The method of claim 6, wherein the method further comprises the step of adjustably positioning a first retractor blade of the retractor relative to a second retractor blade of the retractor to access the heart. 18. The method of claim 6, wherein the base member comprises a ball and wherein the body member comprises a corresponding socket defining the rotational ball joint, and wherein the method further comprises fixing a position of the rotational ball joint by rotating a knob extending from the body member. 19. A method for applying a force to a heart of a patient, wherein the method comprises: positioning an instrument mount assembly on a portion of a retractor;positioning a medical instrument coupled by a first rotational joint to a body member of the instrument mount assembly;positioning and orienting the medical instrument with respect to the retractor via rotation of a ball joint possessing a total of three rotational degrees of freedom in order to orient the medical instrument to contact the heart;activating a single actuator operatively associated with the ball joint to operate the ball joint to rotate with three rotational degrees of freedom; andlocking the ball joint to capture the three rotational degrees of freedom following rotation of the ball joint. 20. The method of claim 19, further comprising the step of positioning and locking a portion of one or more sutures within one or more slots on a platform blade of the retractor.
