An agricultural device associated with reduced tillage techniques in a field includes a frame and a separator supported by the frame. The separator is configured to form a strip of exposed soil in residual plant matter in the field. A crimping device associated with the separator is configured to at least partially crush stems of residual plant matter while maintaining the strip.

1. An agricultural device comprising: a frame;at least one linkage mounted to the frame; andat least one crimping device having a plurality of crimping segments supported by the frame in a direction that is transverse to a direction of travel, the plurality of crimping segments including a first segment and a second segment having respective adjacent ends commonly mounted to the linkage, the adjacent ends including a first adjacent end of the first segment and a second adjacent end of the second segment, the first segment further having a first non-adjacent end and the second segment further having a second non-adjacent end, each crimping segment of the plurality of crimping segments being positioned adjacent with at least one other crimping segment of the plurality of segmentshaving an exterior surface configured to at least partially crush stems of residual plant matter, the exterior surface extending substantially continuously between ends of the crimping segment such that an overall surface is achieved extending substantially continuously between the first non-adjacent end of the first segment and the second non-adjacent end of the second segment across multiple strips of exposed soil in the residual plant matter in the field, andbeing flexibly mounted to the frame such that the crimping segment will raise with respect to at least one other crimping segment of the plurality of crimping segments when the crimping segment is subjected to a temporary increase in resistance caused by an encounter with a non-uniform region in the field. 2. The agricultural device of claim 1, wherein the exterior surface includes outwardly extending protrusions therefrom. 3. The agricultural device of claim 2, wherein the protrusions form a helical arrangement. 4. The agricultural device of claim 2, wherein the protrusions form a chevron arrangement or a discontinuous chevron arrangement. 5. The agricultural device of claim 2, wherein the protrusions are secured to the exterior surface by welding. 6. The agricultural device of claim 2, wherein the protrusions are secured to the exterior via mechanical fasteners. 7. The agricultural device of claim 2, wherein the protrusions are integrally formed with the exterior surface into a unitary construction, the exterior surface being a smooth surface. 8. The agricultural device of claim 1, wherein a force applied by at least one of the plurality of crimping segments to the residual plant matter is a constant force. 9. The agricultural device of claim 1, wherein a force applied by at least one of the plurality of crimping segments to the residual plant matter is a variable force. 10. The agricultural device of claim 1, further comprising a hydraulic ram coupled to at least one of the plurality of crimping segments for applying a hydraulic force. 11. The agricultural device of claim 10, wherein the hydraulic force is user-adjustable. 12. The agricultural device of claim 1, wherein the linkage is a four-bar mechanism linkage. 13. An agricultural device comprising: a frame;at least three pivotable linkages attached to the frame, the pivotable linkages including a first linkage, a second linkage, and a third linkage; andat least two crimping segments including a first segment and a second segment, the first segment being mounted between the first linkage and the second linkage such that the first segment will temporarily raise relative to the second segment when the first segment encounters a non-uniform region in the field, the second segment being mounted between the second linkage and the third linkage such that the second segment will temporarily raise relative to the first segment when the second segment encounters a non-uniform region in the field, each of the crimping segments having an exterior surface configured to at least partially crush stems of residual plant matter, the exterior surface extending substantially continuously between respective adjacent ones of the pivotable linkages such that an overall substantially continuous exterior surface extends between the first linkage and the third linkage across multiple strips of exposed soil in the residual plant matter in the field. 14. The agricultural device of claim 13, wherein the exterior surface includes outwardly extending protrusions therefrom. 15. The agricultural device of claim 14, wherein the protrusions are integrally formed with the surface into a unitary construction, the surface being a smooth surface. 16. The agricultural device of claim 13, wherein at least one of the pivotable linkages is a four-bar mechanism and includes a mounted hydraulic ram applying a user-adjustable hydraulic force. 17. The agricultural device of claim 13, wherein each of the crimping segments receives a force for maintaining a flexible pressure onto the stems of residual plant matter in the field, the force being applied by a device mounted to each of the pivotable linkages, the device being selected from a group consisting of a hydraulic actuator, a pneumatic actuator, and an electric actuator. 18. An agricultural device comprising: a frame;a movable linkage attached to the frame;a force actuator mounted to the movable linkage for applying a user-adjustable force that maintains a flexible down pressure;a first crimping segment mounted to one side of the movable linkage and receiving the user-adjustable force with the flexible down pressure, the first crimping segment having a first exterior surface configured to at least partially crush stems of residual plant matter encountered in a first segment of a field; anda second crimping segment mounted to another side of the movable linkage and receiving the same user-adjustable force with the flexible down pressure, the second crimping having a second exterior surface configured to at least partially crush stems of residual plant matter encountered in a second segment of the field, the second segment of the field being parallel to and adjacent to the first segment of the field, the second crimping segment being independently movable relative to the first crimping segment when encountering a non-uniform region that is present in the second segment of the field but not in the first segment of the field, the flexible down pressure being provided indirectly, via the first crimping segment and the second crimping segment, onto the residual plant matter encountered in the field. 19. The agricultural device of claim 18, wherein the exterior surface includes outwardly extending protrusions therefrom. 20. The agricultural device of claim 18, wherein the force actuator is selected from a group consisting of a hydraulic actuator, a pneumatic actuator, and an electric actuator.
