Whitewater recovery processes, and associated systems and components, are generally described. Certain embodiments relate to whitewater recovery processes in which ion exchange is used to remove dissolved ions from the whitewater, which can reduce the degree to which chemical additives are used in the process. In certain embodiments, flocculation and/or filter components can be employed to aid in the removal of suspended solids from the whitewater.

1. A method of treating whitewater, comprising: exposing a liquid input stream comprising whitewater or derived from whitewater and containing cations and suspended solids to a flocculent such that agglomerations of flocculent and suspended solids are formed;removing at least a portion of the agglomerations from the liquid input stream to produce a supernatant stream containing a lower quantity of suspended solids than the liquid input stream;filtering the supernatant stream to produce a retentate stream and a filtrate stream containing a lower quantity of suspended solids than the retentate stream; andreducing an amount of total dissolved solids within the filtrate stream by performing reverse osmosis and/or nanofiltration on the filtrate stream. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein exposing the liquid input stream to the flocculent comprises transporting the liquid input stream to a flocculation vessel containing the flocculent. 3. The method of claim 2, comprising gravity settling at least a portion of the agglomerations of flocculent and suspended solids. 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the gravity settling occurs within a gravity settling clarifier. 5. The method of claim 1, comprising introducing gas into the liquid input stream. 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the gas is introduced into the liquid input within a dissolved gas flotation separation apparatus. 7. The method of claim 1, comprising filtering the supernatant stream using a disc filter, a pressurized screen filter, a strainer, and/or a depth filtration medium. 8. The method of claim 1, comprising exposing at least a portion of the retentate stream to the flocculent. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein reducing the amount of total dissolved solids within the filtrate stream comprises performing reverse osmosis on the filtrate stream. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein reducing the amount of total dissolved solids within the filtrate stream comprises performing nanofiltration on the filtrate stream. 11. The method of claim 1, comprising exposing the filtrate stream to ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the suspended solids comprise colloidal solids and/or organic solids. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the suspended solids comprise colloidal solids. 14. The method of claim 12, wherein the suspended solids comprise anionic trash, and exposing the liquid input stream to the flocculent forms agglomerations of the flocculent and the anionic trash. 15. The method of claim 1, wherein the liquid input stream comprises calcium carbonate. 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the calcium carbonate comprises precipitated calcium carbonate. 17. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of exposing the liquid input stream to the flocculent comprises exposing the liquid input stream to a non-magnetic flocculent. 18. The method of claim 1, wherein exposing the liquid input stream to the flocculent occurs within a sedimentation apparatus. 19. The method of claim 1, wherein exposing the liquid input stream to the flocculent occurs within a floatation clarifier. 20. The method of claim 1, wherein the flocculent comprises a magnetically-responsive material.
