An automatic hot water recovery apparatus that includes an elastomeric bladder positioned inside a vessel and configured to be connected between a cold water supply line and a hot water heater and wherein the elastomeric bladder is configured to be expanded by water flowing from the cold water line toward the hot water heater and wherein when the elastomeric bladder is fully expanded the water flows through a one way check valve into a dip tube and through a small tube within the dip tube and wherein the elastomeric bladder is configured to contract when the water stops flowing toward the hot water heater and the contracting causes water from the hot water heater to be pulled back through the small tube but not through the dip tube, so that the small tube pulls the water from a lower portion of the hot water heater. 2. The automatic hot water recovery apparatus of claim 1, wherein a diameter of the small tube causes a velocity of water movement during the elastomeric bladder contraction to be an order of magnitude faster than water flow through the dip tube toward the hot water heater when the elastomeric bladder is fully expanded. 3. The automatic hot water recovery apparatus of claim 2, wherein the diameter of the small tube is less than 0.1 inch and another diameter of the dip tube is at least 0.5 inches. 4. The automatic hot water recovery apparatus of claim 2, wherein pulling the water from a lower portion of the hot water heater allows the small tube to pull relatively cold water from the hot water heater and wherein the velocity of the water movement reduces heat transfer to the relatively cold water as the relatively cold water travels up the small tube. 5. The automatic hot water recovery apparatus of claim 1, wherein an external surface of the elastomeric bladder is configured to allow a small amount of the water to flow between the elastomeric bladder and the vessel to reduce stagnant water accumulation therebetween. 6. The automatic hot water recovery apparatus of claim 5, wherein the external surface of the bladder has protuberances or indentations to cause the small amount of the water to flow between the elastomeric bladder and the vessel. 7. The automatic hot water recovery apparatus of claim 6, wherein the protuberances comprise ribs or the indentations comprise grooves. 8. The automatic hot water recovery apparatus of claim 1, wherein an internal surface of the vessel is configured to allow a small amount of the water to flow between the elastomeric bladder and the vessel to reduce stagnant water accumulation therebetween. 9. The automatic hot water recovery apparatus of claim 8, wherein the internal surface of the vessel has protuberances or indentations to cause the small amount of the water to flow between the elastomeric bladder and the vessel. 10. The automatic hot water recovery apparatus of claim 9, wherein the protuberances comprise ribs or the indentations comprise grooves. 11. The automatic hot water recovery apparatus of claim 10, wherein the ribs or the grooves are formed on a cap of the vessel.
