A material that includes at least one layer made of an auxetic structure and articles of footwear having soles comprising the materials. The articles of footwear have sole components that have at least one layer made of a material that has a pattern of geometrical patterns. The geometrical patterns have hinged portions that rotate with respect to each other when the sole is under lateral or longitudinal tension, thus increasing the lateral and longitudinal dimensions of the sole. The sole component may include a pattern of recesses with varying depths, sizes, and shapes disposed along the inner surface as well as the outer surface of the sole component.

1. An article of footwear comprising: an upper;a sole structure;wherein the sole structure comprises a sole component, the sole component being a single monolithic layer of sole material, wherein the sole component has an inner surface and an opposite-facing outer surface, wherein the sole component at least partially comprises an auxetic structure, wherein the sole component includes a plurality of inner recesses formed on the inner surface of the sole component, the plurality of inner recesses comprising at least a first inner recess;wherein the sole component includes a plurality of outer recesses formed on the outer surface of the sole component, the plurality of outer recesses comprising at least a first outer recess;wherein the first inner recess and the first outer recess are generally aligned in a vertical direction;wherein the first inner recess is spaced apart from the first outer recess by an interior region of the sole component, the interior region having a thickness that extends in the vertical direction between a first interior surface associated with an apex of the first outer recess; andwherein the plurality of inner recesses and the plurality of outer recesses are arranged on the sole structure to provide the sole component with the auxetic structure. 2. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the first inner recess is a convex opening with at least a first inner arm, and the first outer recess is a convex opening with at least a first outer arm. 3. The article of footwear of claim 2, wherein the first inner recess is three-pointed star-shaped with at least three inner arms, and the first outer recess is three-pointed star-shaped with at least three outer arms. 4. The article of footwear of claim 3, wherein the at least three inner arms are disposed around an inner arm center, and extend radially from the inner arm center, wherein the at least three inner arms are arranged to form substantially equivalent angles around the inner arm center, wherein the at least three outer arms are disposed around an outer arm center, and extend radially from the outer arm center, and wherein the at least three outer arms are arranged to form substantially equivalent angles around the outer arm center. 5. The article of footwear of claim 4, wherein the first inner recess is substantially different in size from the first outer recess. 6. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the first inner recess is substantially different in geometry from the first outer recess. 7. The article of footwear of claim 1, further including a second inner recess, wherein the first inner recess has a first depth and the second inner recess has a second depth, and wherein the first depth is less than the second depth. 8. The article of footwear of claim 1, further including a second outer recess, wherein the first outer recess has a first depth and the second outer recess has a second depth, and wherein the first depth is greater than the second depth. 9. The article of footwear of claim 2, where the plurality of inner recesses and the plurality of outer recesses are arranged in geometric patterns and wherein tensioning the sole structure causes the sole component to expand in the horizontal direction. 10. The article of footwear of claim 2, the sole component further including a second outer recess and a second inner recess, wherein the second outer recess and the second inner recess are disposed in a staggered arrangement in the vertical direction. 11. The article of footwear of claim 9, wherein the plurality of inner recesses is generally aligned with the plurality of outer recesses in the vertical direction. 12. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the first outer recess includes a first maximum height in the vertical direction, and wherein the first maximum height is associated with the apex of the first outer recess. 13. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the second interior surface of the first inner recess is substantially planar such that the first inner recess has a substantially uniform depth. 14. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the first interior surface of the first outer recess is substantially curved, and the apex represents a peak point of the first interior surface. 15. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the sole component wherein the first inner recess and the first outer recess are located in a forefoot region of the sole component. 16. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the sole component wherein the first inner recess and the first outer recess are located in a heel region of the sole component. 17. The article of footwear of claim 11, wherein one or more of the plurality of inner recesses is in fluid communication with one or more of the plurality of outer recesses. 18. The article of footwear of claim 1, wherein the sole component further includes a second inner recess and a second outer recess, and wherein the second inner recess is in fluid communication with the second outer recess, wherein the second inner recess and the second outer recess form a through-hole aperture, and wherein the second inner recess has a three-pointed star cross-sectional shape in a substantially horizontal plane.
