An energy storage and recovery system employs air compressed utilizing power from an operating wind turbine. This compressed air is stored within one or more chambers of a structure supporting the wind turbine above the ground. By functioning as both a physical support and as a vessel for storing compressed air, the relative contribution of the support structure to the overall cost of the energy storage and recovery system may be reduced, thereby improving economic realization for the combined turbine/support apparatus. In certain embodiments, expansion forces of the compressed air stored within the chamber, may be relied upon to augment the physical stability of a support structure, further reducing material costs of the support structure.

An apparatus comprising: a first mechanical linkage between a wind turbine and a planetary gear system;a second mechanical linkage between the planetary gear system and a first component of an energy storage system comprising a compressor; anda third mechanical linkage in communication with the planetary gear system, wherein the planetary gear system allows movement of fewer than all of the first mechanical linkage, the second mechanical linkage, and the third mechanical linkage to cause the compressor to flow compressed gas to a storage unit comprising carbon fiber fabricated to exhibit flexion in a particular dimension;wherein, the storage unit comprises a support structure; andthe compressor is located in a nacelle and is configured to flow the compressed gas to the storage unit through a pneumatic linkage traversing a joint between the nacelle and the support structure. 2. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the first component of the energy storage system comprises a compressor/expander. 3. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the third mechanical linkage is in communication with a second component of the energy storage system comprising a generator, such that the planetary gear system allows movement of the second mechanical linkage and the third mechanical linkage subtractive from the first mechanical linkage. 4. An apparatus as in claim 3 wherein the compressor comprises a compressor/expander. 5. An apparatus as in claim 4 wherein the planetary gear system allows movement of the second mechanical linkage additive to the first mechanical linkage. 6. An apparatus as in claim 3 wherein the compressor comprises a dedicated compressor. 7. An apparatus as in claim 6 wherein the second component of the energy storage system comprises a dedicated expander. 8. An apparatus as in claim 3 wherein the generator comprises a motor/generator. 9. An apparatus as in claim 8 wherein the planetary gear system allows movement of the third mechanical linkage additive to the first mechanical linkage. 10. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the first mechanical linkage comprises a first rotating shaft, the second mechanical linkage comprises a second rotating shaft, and the third mechanical linkage comprises a third rotating shaft. 11. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the third mechanical linkage is in communication with a generator. 12. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the wind turbine and the generator are part of an existing wind turbine system. 13. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the generator is located in a nacelle. 14. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the first linkage traverses a joint between a nacelle and a support structure. 15. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the second linkage traverses a joint between a nacelle and a support structure. 16. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the generator comprises a motor/generator. 17.
