A launch system comprises a nose section comprising a nose coupling surface, a tail section comprising a tail coupling surface facing the nose coupling surface and a mast coupling the nose and tail sections. The mast is configured to expand and retract to displace the nose and tail sections within a range of distances from one another. In a retracted state, the nose and tail sections are either structurally coupled to one another at the nose and tail coupling surfaces or structurally coupled to at least one integrated module located between the nose and the tail sections.

1. A multiple-stage rocket comprising: a first stage comprising a fuel section and a return vehicle, the fuel section and return vehicle being releasably coupled to one another; anda second stage comprising an orbiter and a payload module releasably coupled to one another, wherein the first and second stages are releasably coupled together, andwherein the orbiter comprises: a nose section,a tail section, anda mast coupling the nose and tail sections,the mast being configured to expand to displace the nose and tail sections away from one another to release the payload module from the orbiter, and to retract to displace the nose and tail sections towards one another into a retracted state once the payload module has been released;wherein in the retracted state, the nose and tail sections are either structurally coupled to one another at a nose coupling surface and a tail coupling surface or structurally coupled to at least one module located between the nose and the tail sections; andwherein the nose and tail coupling surfaces each comprise complementary ones of a connecting pair configured to releasably couple the nose and tail sections to opposing ends of the payload module. 2. The multiple-stage rocket of claim 1, wherein the return vehicle comprises engines and control electronics. 3. The multiple-stage rocket of claim 2, wherein the return vehicle further comprises a connecting skirt configured to releasably couple the fuel section, the connecting skirt also comprising a nose section comprising one or more access ports to accommodate fuel and other conduits to the return vehicle. 4. The multiple-stage rocket of claim 3, wherein the return vehicle further comprises aerodynamic surfaces and a landing gear assembly to permit the return vehicle to effectuate a horizontal landing. 5. A method of delivering a payload to a release location in orbit using a multiple-stage rocket, the method comprising: launching the multiple-stage rocket of claim 1;dissociating the first stage from the second stage and permitting the second stage to continue on to the release location in orbit;dissociating the fuel section and the return vehicle from one another, the return vehicle being configured to effectuate a horizontal landing at a desired return location;dissociating the payload module from the orbiter at the release location in orbit; andactuating the mast to the retracted state and effectuating a horizontal landing of the orbiter at a desired return location. 6. The multiple-stage rocket of claim 1, wherein the orbiter further comprises a removable fairing configured to temporarily cover the mast during launch of the multiple-stage rocket, and further configured to be dissociated from the multiple-stage rocket before retraction of the mast into the retracted state.
