A method and system for managing email or other messaging and attachments to messages which are forwarded to devices having limited processing and memory capacity. The method includes the steps of: receiving a user configuration categorizing messages for the user by elements of the message; accessing the user message datastore upon receipt of at least one new message for the user to a user data store; comparing said at least one new message to a set of user specific rules; rendering a message summary including at least one link accessible by the processing device, the link enabling action with respect to the message when selected by the user; and outputting the message summary to a user device.

1. A method of automatically changing the classification type of a message processed by a message management system comprising a personal information space of a user of a mobile device, the personal information space of the user comprising a schedule of meetings and a list of addressees to a scheduled meeting in the schedule of meetings, and a database of user preference rules, the message destined for the mobile device of the user, the classification type having associated with it a level of importance to the user and one or more user preference rules for classifying messages into the classification type, the method comprising the steps: a. parsing, by the message management system, one or more data fields within the message;b. determining an initial classification type of the message by applying a first rule in the database of user preference rules to one of the one or more data fields of the message; andc. automatically changing the initial classification type of the message to a second classification type having a higher importance level if the domain name of the sender address appears in a list of addressees to a scheduled meeting in the schedule of meetings by applying a second rule in the database of user preference rules to one of the one or more data fields of the message, wherein automatically changing the initial classification is in response to a triggering event relating to data in the personal information space of the user. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the classification type is one of VIP email, Standard email, and Other email, wherein the level of importance of VIP email is higher than the level of importance of Standard email, and the level of importance of Standard email is higher than the level of importance of Other email. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the classification type is a user-added classification type. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein a user preference rule classifies a message into a message classification type if one of the one or more data fields contains a keyword. 5. The method of claim 1, wherein a user preference rule classifies a message into a message classification type if the domain name of the address of the sender of the message appears in an address field of the message other than the sender address field of the message. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein a user preference rule classifies a message into a message classification type if the address of the sender appears in a contact address book of the user. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein automatically changing the classification type of the message comprises promoting the classification type of the message to a classification type having a higher level of importance than the level of importance of the initial classification type. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein automatically changing the classification type of the message comprises demoting the classification type of the message to a classification type having a lower level of importance than the level of importance of the initial classification type. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein triggering event is distinct and separate from the message. 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the triggering event is entry of a contact into an address book of the user. 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the triggering event is a meeting being scheduled with a list of addressees. 12. The method of claim 9, wherein the triggering event is one of sending an email message, receiving an email message, sending a text message, and receiving a text message. 13. The method of claim 1, wherein the first rule is a default user preference rule. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the default user preference rule is classifying a message as Standard email. 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the default user preference rule is classifying a message as Other mail when the address of the sender is not found in the personal information space of the user. 16. The method of claim 1, wherein the personal information space of the user comprises a contact address book of the user. 17. The method of claim 1, wherein the personal information space of the user comprises one of a database of email of the user and a database of text messages of the user. 18. A method of automatically changing the classification type of a message processed by a message management system comprising a personal information space of a user of a mobile device and a database of user preference rules, the message destined for the mobile device of the user, the classification type having associated with it a level of importance to the user and one or more user preference rules for classifying messages into the classification type, the personal information space of the user comprising a schedule of meetings and a list of addressees to a scheduled meeting in the schedule of meetings, the method comprising the steps: a. parsing, by the message management system, one or more data fields within the message;b. determining an initial classification type of the message by applying a first rule in the database of user preference rules to one of the one or more data fields;c. automatically changing the initial classification type to a second classification type by applying a second rule in the database of user preference rules to one of the one or more data fields; andd. promoting the message classification to a classification type having a higher importance level, if the domain name of the sender address appears in the list of addressees to the scheduled meeting in the schedule of meetings.
