In one embodiment, the emergency message system employs a transceiver network with a plurality transceivers coupled to monitoring devices residing at a plurality of customer premises. Control room operators receive an emergency message from an identifiable transceiver. The transceiver, identified by an identification code, indicates a location and the nature of the emergency condition so that the control operators may request appropriate emergency assistance.

The system of claim 1, wherein a portion of the redefined communication paths further comprises a portion of an Internet. 3. The system of claim 1, wherein a portion of the redefined communication paths further comprises a portion of a cellular network. 4. The system of claim 1, wherein a portion of the redefined communication paths further comprises a portion of a public switched telephone network. 5. The system of claim 1, wherein a portion of the redefined communication paths further comprises an RF network. 6. The system of claim 1, wherein a portion of the redefined communication paths further comprises a portion of a combination of two or more of an Internet, a cellular network, an RF network, and a public switched telephone network. 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the emergency message transceiver is a cellular transceiver. 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the emergency message transceiver is an RF transceiver. 9. The system of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of network transceivers are cellular transceivers. 10. The system of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the plurality of network transceivers are RF transceivers. 11. A system for transmitting emergency messages, the system comprising: a first transceiver configured to detect an emergency message from a second transceiver and configured to transmit the emergency message and a first identification code to a third transceiver designated by a predetermined network path, the first identification code uniquely associated with the first transceiver such that a location of the first transceiver is determined by associating the first identification code with information residing in a database that includes at least the location of the first transceiver; anda site controller configured to communicate the emergency message between any one of the first, second, or third transceivers and an intermediary communication system;the third transceiver configured to detect the first emergency message and configured to transmit the first emergency message and a second identification code associated with the third transceiver such that the location of the third transceiver is determined by associating the second identification code with information residing in the database that includes at least the location of the third transceiver. 12. The system of claim 11, wherein the site controller is further configured to generate a confirmation message indicating that the emergency message was received and transmit the confirmation message to one or more of the first transceiver and the second transceiver. 13. The system of claim 11, wherein the location of the second transceiver can be approximated using the locations of one or more of the first transceiver and the second transceiver. 14. The system of claim 11, wherein the site controller is configured to redefine communication paths when failure of a component along the predetermined path is detected and transmit path information for a redefined path to one or more of the first transceiver, the second transceiver, and the third transceiver. 15. The system of claim 14, wherein the redefined path comprises a portion of a cellular network. 16. The system of claim 14, wherein the redefined path comprises a portion of the Internet. 17. The system of claim 14, wherein the redefined path comprises a portion of an RF network. 18. The system of claim 14, wherein the redefined path comprises a portion of a public switched telephone network. 19. A system for communicating emergency messages, the system comprising: a monitoring device having a first transceiver with a first identification code, the monitoring device configured to monitor a predetermined parameter and generate an emergency message if the value of the parameter is outside a predetermined range;a plurality of network transceivers, each network transceiver having a unique identification code and configured to communicate the emergency message with other network transceivers over a predetermined path selected from a plurality of possible paths;a site controller in communication with the monitoring device via at least one network transceiver, the site controller configured to communicate the emergency message from the monitoring device to an intermediary communication system, the site controller comprising logic configured to redefine the predetermined path when failure of a network transceiver along the predetermined path is detected and transmitting path information for the redefined path to transceivers along the redefined path. 20. The system of claim 19, the site controller comprising logic configured to monitor the operational status of the monitoring device and transmit information relating to the operational status of the monitoring device to the intermediary communication system.
