In accordance with embodiments of the present invention, a rod extension for extending a fusion construct is provided. The rod extension allows a surgeon to connect a stabilization rod implant to at least a portion of a patient's spine, and also to connect the stabilization rod implant to an existing implant that has been previously installed in the patient. The existing fusion implant typically includes at least one existing pedicle screw, at least one existing rod, and at least one existing connector interconnecting the existing pedicle screw to the existing rod. The extension implant comprises a rod, an offset beam connected to the rod, and a clamp interconnected to the offset beam, wherein the clamp can be secured to the existing rod, thereby extending the fusion construct. A method of use is also provided.
1. A system comprising: a fusion implant comprising a pedicle screw and a rod positioned in a receiver of the pedicle screw; anda spinal fusion extension implant for interconnecting to the fusion implant, the spinal fusion extension implant comprising a rod having a first portion that is substantial
1. A system comprising: a fusion implant comprising a pedicle screw and a rod positioned in a receiver of the pedicle screw; anda spinal fusion extension implant for interconnecting to the fusion implant, the spinal fusion extension implant comprising a rod having a first portion that is substantially parallel with the rod of the fusion implant, the rod of the spinal fusion extension comprising an offset beam extending from the first portion and a clamp extending from the offset beam that is coupled to the rod of the fusion implant, wherein the offset beam extends over the pedicle screw. 2. A system as recited in claim 1, wherein a rigid connection is formed between the rod of the fusion implant and the rod when the clamp is coupled to the rod of the fusion implant. 3. A system as recited in claim 1, wherein: the pedicle screw comprises a shaft that defines a longitudinal axis, the receiver being coupled to the shaft; andthe offset beam intersects the longitudinal axis. 4. A system as recited in claim 1, wherein the offset beam steps around the receiver. 5. A system as recited in claim 1, wherein the spinal fusion extension implant comprises a screw hole with a screw disposed therein to fix the spinal fusion extension implant to the rod of the fusion implant. 6. A system as recited in claim 5, wherein the screw is movable between a first configuration in which the spinal fusion extension implant is movable relative to rod of the fusion implant and a second configuration in which the spinal fusion extension implant is fixed relative to the rod of the fusion implant. 7. A system as recited in claim 1, wherein the receiver is positioned between the first portion and the clamp. 8. A system as recited in claim 1, wherein the clamp is positioned opposite the first portion, with the offset beam connecting the clamp and the first portion. 9. A system as recited in claim 1, wherein: the rod of the fusion implant has a circumference; andthe clamp extends around at least half of the circumference. 10. A system as recited in claim 9, wherein the clamp does not extend completely around the circumference. 11. A system as recited in claim 1, further comprising a second pedicle screw, the rod of the fusion implant being positioned in a receiver of the second pedicle screw, the clamp being positioned between the pedicle screw and the second pedicle screw. 12. A system as recited in claim 1, wherein the rod of the fusion implant extends completely through the receiver. 13. A system as recited in claim 1, further comprising a second pedicle screw, the first portion being positioned in a receiver of the second pedicle screw. 14. A system as recited in claim 13, wherein the first portion extends completely through the receiver of the second pedicle screw. 15. A system as recited in claim 1, wherein the clamp comprises a deformable body. 16. A system as recited in claim 1, wherein the first portion defines a longitudinal axis, and the offset beam comprises a second portion that extends parallel to the longitudinal axis, the first and second portions being connected by a transitional section that extends perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. 17. A system comprising: a fusion implant comprising a first pedicle screw and a rod positioned in the pedicle screw;a second pedicle screw that is spaced apart from the first pedicle screw; anda spinal fusion extension implant comprising a rod having a first portion that is positioned within the second pedicle screw, an offset beam extending from the first portion and a clamp extending from the offset beam that is coupled to the rod of the fusion implant, wherein the offset beam steps around the first pedicle screw. 18. A system as recited in claim 17, wherein the first portion and the offset beam each extend substantially parallel to the rod of the fusion implant. 19. A system comprising: a fusion implant comprising a pedicle screw and a rod positioned in a receiver of the pedicle screw; and a spinal fusion extension implant for interconnecting to the fusion implant, the spinal fusion extension implant comprising a rod having a first portion that is substantially parallel with the rod of the fusion implant, the rod of the spinal fusion extension comprising an offset beam extending from the first portion and a clamp extending from the offset beam that is coupled to the rod of the fusion implant, wherein the offset beam steps around the pedicle screw.
