A system and method synthesizing images of a locale to generate a composite image that provide a panoramic view of the locale. A video camera moves along a street recording images of objects along the street. A GPS receiver and inertial navigation system provide the position of the camera as the images are being recorded. The images are indexed with the position data provided by the GPS receiver and inertial navigation system. The composite image is created on a column-by-column basis by determining which of the acquired images contains the desired pixel column, extracting the pixels associated with the column, and stacking the columns side by side. The composite images are stored in an image database and associated with a street name and number range of the street being depicted in the image. The image database covers a substantial amount of a geographic area allowing a user to visually navigate the area from a user terminal.

1. In a system including a user terminal comprising a screen, an input device, a processor, and memory, a method for displaying geographical navigation information in a web browser operating on the user terminal, the method comprising: displaying, on the screen, a first portion of a map in a first region of a web page rendered by the web browser;displaying, on the screen, at least one user interface control in a second region of the web page;receiving, from the input device, a user input identifying a geographic location; andupdating, by the processor executing a script embedded in the web page, the web page to display, in the first region, a second portion of the map at the geographic location identified in the user input in place of the first portion of the map while continuing to display the at least one user interface control in the second region. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiving the user input identifying the geographic location comprises receiving a user input event corresponding to a location on the map. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiving the user input identifying the geographic location comprises receiving a user input event corresponding to a selection of a navigation direction. 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising: displaying, on the web page, a view corresponding to the geographic location identified in the user input, the view depicting a side view or a front view of an object from the geographic location. 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising: loading, from a remote server, a composite image depicting the view corresponding to the geographic location identified in the user input, the composite image being generated based on image frames acquired by an image recording device when the image recording device is in motion along a trajectory. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one user interface control comprises a text input field configured to receive at least a portion of an address, wherein the user input identifying the geographic location comprises the at least the portion of the address. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein, after updating the web page, the web page continues to display the first portion of the map in a region of the web page adjacent the first region. 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising: retrieving, by the processor executing the script embedded in the webpage in response to the user input, the second portion of the map from a remote server while continuing to display the at least one user interface control in the second region of the web page. 9. In a system including an image source providing a plurality of image data for displaying a plurality of images depicting front and/or side views of objects in a geographic area, each of the images being a composite image generated based on image frames acquired by an image recording device when the image recording device is in motion along a trajectory, and including a user terminal comprising a screen, an input device, a processor, and memory, a method for enabling visual navigation of a geographic area from the user terminal, the method comprising: displaying, on the screen, in a first region of a web page rendered by a web browser running on the user terminal, a first view corresponding to a first geographic location and depicting a front or side view of an object from the first geographic location;displaying, on the screen, in a second region of the web page, at least one user interface control;receiving, from the input device, a user input identifying a second geographic location; andupdating, by the user terminal executing a script embedded in the web page, the first region of the web page to display a second view at the second geographic location in place of the first view, the second view depicting a front or side view of the object from the second geographic location while continuing to display the at least one user interface control in the second region of the web page. 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the second view comprises at least one image of the plurality of images, wherein the method further comprises: loading, from a remote server, the at least one image of the second view. 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the receiving the user input identifying the second geographic location comprises receiving a user input event corresponding to a selection of a navigation direction. 12. The method of claim 9, further comprising: displaying, on the web page, a first portion of a map corresponding to the first view. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein receiving the user input identifying the second geographic location comprises receiving a user input event in a position of the first portion of the map, the position corresponding to the second geographic location. 14. The method of claim 13, further comprising: updating the web page to display a second portion of the map, the second portion of the map corresponding to the second geographic location, while continuing to display the at least one user interface control in the second region of the web page. 15. The method of claim 13, further comprising: loading, from a remote server, a second portion of the map corresponding to the second geographic location. 16. The method of claim 12, wherein, after updating the web page, the web page continues to display the first view in a region of the web page adjacent the first region. 17. The method of claim 12, further comprising: retrieving, by the processor executing the script embedded in the webpage in response to the user input, the second view from a remote server while continuing to display the at least one user interface control in the second region of the web page. 18. The method of claim 9, wherein the at least one user interface control comprises a text input field configured to receive at least a portion of an address, wherein the user input identifying the second geographic location comprises the at least the portion of the address. 19. In a system including an image source providing a plurality of image data for displaying a plurality of images depicting front and/or side views of objects in a geographic area, each of the images being a composite image generated based on image frames acquired by an image recording device when the image recording device is in motion along a trajectory, and including a user terminal comprising a screen, an input device, a processor, and memory, a method for enabling visual navigation of a geographic area from the user terminal, the method comprising: displaying, on the screen, a first portion of a map in a first region of a web page shown on the screen, the web page being displayed in a web browser running on the user terminal;displaying, on the screen, at least one user interface control in a second region of the web page;receiving, from the input device, a user input identifying a geographic location; andupdating, by the processor executing a script embedded in the web page, the web page to display a composite image corresponding to the geographic location and to display a second portion of the map in the first region of the web page in place of the first portion of the map while continuing to display the at least one user interface control in the second region of the web page. 20. The method of claim 19, further comprising: loading, from a remote server, the composite image corresponding to the geographic location. 21. The method of claim 19, wherein the receiving the user input identifying the geographic location comprises receiving a user input event corresponding to the geographic location on the map. 22. The method of claim 19, wherein the web page displays a plurality of navigation direction controls, and wherein the receiving the user input identifying the geographic location comprises receiving a user input event corresponding to a selection of a navigation direction control of the navigation direction controls. 23. The method of claim 19, wherein the at least one user interface control comprises a text input field configured to receive at least a portion of an address, wherein the user input identifying the geographic location comprises the at least the portion of the address.
