A grinding wheel assembly for use in a sharpening system includes a grinding wheel configured to be mounted in the sharpening system to carry out sharpening operations in which the grinding wheel removes material from a blade to be sharpened, such as the blade of an ice skate. The grinding wheel assembly further includes an identification tag attached to the grinding wheel, the identification tag having (1) secure memory including a usage location for persistently and securely storing a usage tracking value, and (2) interface circuitry for engaging in communication with a transceiver of the sharpening system to enable electronic circuitry of the sharpening system to both read from and write to the usage location to track usage of the grinding wheel for sharpening operations. The memory may also store other data including user-specific system parameters usable to customize operation, and fault information usable to diagnose fault conditions.

1. A grinding wheel assembly for use in a sharpening system, comprising: a grinding wheel configured to be mounted for rotation in the sharpening system to carry out sharpening operations in which the grinding wheel removes material from a blade to be sharpened, the grinding wheel comprising: a metallic ring having an abrasive-coated outer surface for contacting a blade to be sharpened during a sharpening operation, a cylindrical region extending between first and second axial ends of the metallic ring;a hub of a non-metallic material, a first axial end of the hub is located at least partly within the cylindrical region of the metallic ring, the first axial end of the metallic ring is fixedly mounted to the hub, the hub including a cavity carrying an identification tag positioned to communicate with a skate blade sharpening system during operation, the non-metallic hub separating the identification tag from the metallic ring, the second axial end of the metallic ring configured for mating with an arbor on a rotating shaft of the sharpening system such that the arbor is positioned at least partly within the cylindrical region of the metallic ring; andthe identification tag having (1) secure memory including a usage location for persistently and securely storing a usage tracking value, the secure memory configured to prevent unauthorized digital access to the usage location, and (2) interface circuitry for engaging in communication with a transceiver of the sharpening system to enable electronic circuitry of the sharpening system to both read from and write to the usage location to track usage of the grinding wheel for sharpening operations. 2. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein the hub is a rigid disc. 3. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein the grinding wheel further includes a tag capture disk covering the identification tag on the hub. 4. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein (i) the usage tracking value and predetermined usage limit value both express usage as respective numbers of passes of relative motion between the grinding wheel and a skate blade, and (ii) the interface circuitry is operative to receive numbers of passes from the electronic circuitry of the sharpening system and to write the received numbers to the usage location as the usage tracking value. 5. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein the secure memory of the identification tag further includes one or more system setup parameter locations for storing system setup parameters, and wherein the interface circuitry is operative to (i) provide the system setup parameters from the system setup parameter locations to the electronic circuitry of the sharpening system to be applied to corresponding components of the sharpening system. 6. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 5, wherein the grinding wheel is one of a set of distinct grinding wheels having corresponding distinct values for operating parameters including one or more of a grinding motor rotation speed, a translation speed, and a normal grinding force, and wherein the system setup parameters are specific values of the operating parameters for specific use with the one grinding wheel. 7. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein the secure memory of the identification tag further includes one or more user setting locations for storing user-specific default settings for parameters of a sharpening operation, and wherein the interface circuitry is operative to provide the user-specific default settings to the electronic circuitry to be applied to control a sharpening operation. 8. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein the secure memory further includes one or more fault information locations for storing fault data describing one or more fault conditions occurring during a sharpening operation using the grinding wheel, the fault information locations being readable by a separate reader used in a fault diagnosis, and wherein the interface circuitry is operative to (i) receive from the electronic circuitry particular fault data identifying occurrence of a particular fault during a sharpening operation, and (ii) write the particular fault data to the fault information locations. 9. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein the interface circuitry provides a wireless interface for wireless communication between the transceiver and the identification tag. 10. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 9, wherein the identification tag is located on the grinding wheel so as to rotate with the grinding wheel, and wherein the interface circuitry is operative to engage in the wireless communication multiple times within a sharpening operation as the grinding wheel rotates. 11. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein the grinding wheel includes a metal grinding ring having an outer surface with an abrasive layer thereon, the abrasive layer having a lifetime over which it wears during use to a point at which the grinding ring is no longer usable for sharpening, and wherein the secure memory includes a usage limit location storing a predetermined usage limit value corresponding to a period of use of the abrasive layer less than the lifetime of the abrasive layer. 12. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein: the interface circuitry of the identification tag provides a wireless interface for wireless communication between the transceiver and the identification tag; andthe identification tag is mounted to the hub in a manner to reduce an effect of the metallic ring on the wireless communication between the transceiver and the identification tag. 13. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein the cavity in the hub is a user-inaccessible covered cavity. 14. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 13, wherein the identification tag is located outside the cylindrical region. 15. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein the secure memory is encrypted. 16. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein the identification tag comprises a unique identifier and a confidential key configured to generate an access code, the access code configured to enable the electronic circuitry of the sharpening system to both read from and write to the usage location. 17. A grinding wheel assembly for use in a sharpening system, comprising: a grinding wheel configured to be mounted for rotation in the sharpening system to carry out sharpening operations in which the grinding wheel removes material from a blade to be sharpened, the grinding wheel comprising: a metallic ring having an abrasive-coated outer surface for contacting a blade to be sharpened during a sharpening operation, a cylindrical region extending between first and second axial ends of the metallic ring;a hub of a non-metallic material, a first axial end of the hub is located at least partly within the cylindrical region of the metallic ring, the first axial end of the metallic ring is fixedly mounted to the hub, the hub including a cavity carrying an identification tag positioned to communicate with a skate blade sharpening system during operation, the non-metallic hub separating the identification tag from the metallic ring, the second axial end of the metallic ring configured for mating with an arbor on a rotating shaft of the sharpening system such that the arbor is positioned at least partly within the cylindrical region of the metallic ring; andthe identification tag having (1) memory including a usage location for persistently storing a usage tracking value, and (2) interface circuitry for engaging in communication with a transceiver of the sharpening system. 18. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 17, wherein (i) the usage tracking value and a predetermined usage limit value both express usage as respective numbers of passes of relative motion between the grinding wheel and a skate blade, and (ii) the interface circuitry is operative to receive numbers of passes from electronic circuitry of the sharpening system and to write the received numbers to the usage location as the usage tracking value. 19. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 17, wherein the grinding wheel includes a metal grinding ring having an outer surface with an abrasive layer thereon, the abrasive layer having a lifetime over which it wears during use to a point at which the grinding ring is no longer usable for sharpening, and wherein the secure memory includes the predetermined usage limit value corresponding to a period of use of the abrasive layer less than the lifetime of the abrasive layer. 20. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 1, wherein the cavity is a circumferential cavity encircling an orifice configured for mating with a rotating shaft of the sharpening system. 21. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 20, wherein an axial end of the hub includes an inaccessible covered cavity in which the identification tag is located. 22. A grinding wheel assembly according to claim 20, wherein the identification tag is located outside the cylindrical region.
