A central vacuum cleaning system control subsystem for use in a central vacuum cleaning system having a motor includes a central vacuum unit control module with a receiver for wirelessly receiving command signals, and a power stage for controlling the motor in accordance with command signals received through the receiver. The control module is stable in high ambient temperature. Current flowing to the motor is sensed, and motor overcurrent and undercurrent conditions are determined. The control module determines when the motor is in an overcurrent condition. Power stage has a triac for controlling power to the motor. The control module also has a microprocessor that compares the current sensed against a normal operating current to determine overcurrent condition. Power to motor ceases when overcurrent condition exists. A generator is powered by air flow in a cleaning system for production of electrical energy.

1. A central vacuum cleaning system comprising: a vacuum source including a motor within a motor housing,a receptacle extending from the motor housing for receiving dirt,a motor control circuit controlling power to the motor, and comprising at least one operating condition sensor for monitoring one or more operating conditions of the motor, and a variable speed controller for adjusting a speed of the motor, valves to which a flexible hose may be connected, conduits connected to the vacuum source and terminating in the valves,a handle to be held by an operator, the hose terminating at the handle,a cleaning attachment connected to the handle, such that dirt is drawn by a vacuum created by the vacuum source through the attachment, handle, hose, and conduits, display means at a display location on the handle, remote from the vacuum source and the motor control circuit, input means at an input location on the handle, remote from the vacuum source and the motor control circuit, andduplex communication means to exchange control signals from the input means to the variable speed controller of the motor control circuit to adjust the speed of the motor and to exchange from the motor control circuit to the display location during operation of the motor a plurality of messages, including messages derived in dependence on an operating condition measured by the least one operating condition sensor, regarding the status of the system, such messages to drive the display means for communication with an operator, the duplex communications means comprising an RF wireless receiver and RF wireless transmitter in the handle, and a RF wireless transmitter and RF wireless receiver at the motor control circuit. 2. The system of claim 1 wherein the least one operating condition sensor includes one or more of a current sensor and a temperature sensor. 3. The system of claim 1 wherein the variable speed controller comprises a triac for controlling a voltage applied to the motor. 4. The system of claim 3 wherein the triac is driven by a gate signal that is phase shifted based on the control signals from the user input interface. 5. The system of claim 1 wherein the variable speed controller comprises a solid state switch for controlling a voltage applied to the motor. 6. The system of claim 5 wherein the solid state switch is driven by a pulse width modulation gate drive signal in dependence on the control signals from the user input interface. 7. A central vacuum cleaning system comprising: (i) a vacuum source including: a motor within a motor housing,a receptacle extending from the motor housing for receiving dirt, anda motor control circuit controlling power to the motor, the motor control circuit including at least one operating condition sensor to monitor one or more operating conditions of the motor and generate message signals in respect of the one or operating conditions and a variable speed controller for adjusting a speed of the motor;(ii) one or more valves;(iii) conduits for connecting to the vacuum source to the valves;(iv) a handle to be held by an operator, a flexible hose for releasably connecting the handle to one of the one or more valves, and a cleaning attachment connected to the handle, such that when the motor is activated during use of the system, dirt is drawn by a vacuum created by the vacuum source through the attachment, handle, hose, and conduits, and into the receptacle;(v) a user display responsive to the message signals, the user display being at a display location on the handle, remote from the vacuum source;(vi) a user input interface at an input location on the handle, remote from the vacuum source;(vii) a duplex communications system to transfer control signals from the user input interface to the variable speed controller of the motor control circuit to adjust the speed of the motor and to transfer, during operation of the motor, the message signals from the motor control circuit to the user display, wherein the duplex communications system comprises an RF wireless receiver and RF wireless transmitter in the handle, and a RF wireless transmitter and RF wireless receiver at the motor control circuit. 8. The system of claim 7 wherein the least one operating condition sensor includes one or more of a current sensor and a temperature sensor. 9. The system of claim 7 wherein the variable speed controller comprises a triac for controlling a voltage applied to the motor. 10. The system of claim 9 wherein the triac is driven by a gate signal that is phase shifted based on the control signals from the user input interface. 11. The system of claim 7 wherein the variable speed controller comprises a solid state switch for controlling a voltage applied to the motor. 12. The system of claim 11 wherein the solid state switch is driven by a pulse width modulation gate drive signal in dependence on the control signals from the user input interface.
