A metal closure having multiple thread engaging lugs configured to decrease the pressure exerted by the closure lugs on the neck of a container is provided. In various embodiments, the metal closure comprises a top wall, a skirt extending downward from a peripheral edge of the top wall, a lower edge included on the skirt, and a plurality of lugs formed at the lower edge of the skirt. Pressure may be decreased by the closure having more lugs and/or larger lugs than other metal closures.

The closure of claim 3, wherein the container and the threads are made from plastic. 5. A metal closure comprising: a top wall having a center point, the center point lying along a central axis about which the top wall is concentrically disposed;a sidewall extending downward along its length from a peripheral edge of the top wall to a lower edge; andat least five lugs, wherein a midpoint of a first lug is spaced approximately 72 degrees±1 degree, as measured from the central axis, from a midpoint of a second lug;the top wall, sidewall and lugs being formed from a single contiguous piece of metal;wherein the lugs are deformed sections the sidewall that extend radially inwards towards the central axis, and wherein adjacent lugs are separated from each other by undeformed portions of the sidewall;wherein the closure has a diameter of approximately 63 mm;wherein each lug has a first end and a second end spaced from the first end in the circumferential direction, the angular distance between the first end of the first lug and second end of an adjacent lug as measured from the central axis being between approximately 30 degrees and 50 degrees; andeach lug occupying between 5 percent and 15 percent of a perimeter defined by the sidewall, the length of each lug being between 0.5 and 1.5 inches;wherein the first end of each lug is located closer to a bottom surface of the top wall than the second end of each lug, and the second end of each lug extends further radially inwards from the lower edge of the sidewall than the first end of each lug. 6. The closure of claim 5 wherein the number of lugs formed at the lower edge of the skirt is five. 7. The metal closure of claim 5 coupled to a container having a neck, the container having at least five polymeric threads disposed at an angle on the neck of the container, wherein the lugs include a portion configured to engage the threads. 9. The metal closure of claim 8 wherein the portion of the lugs configured to engage the threads includes an angled portion, the angled portion of the lugs having an angle that matches the angle of the threads. 10. A container assembly comprising: a metal closure having: a top wall;a skirt extending downward from a peripheral edge of the top wall, the skirt including a lower edge; andat least five metallic lugs formed at the lower edge of the skirt, each lug defining an angled lug engagement surface extending between a lug first end and a lug second end, the lug first end located closer to the lower edge of the skirt as measured in a radial direction than the lug second end;wherein each of the at least five metallic lugs has a length as measured in a circumferential direction of between about 0.5 inches and 1.5 inches; anda container configured to be filled with a food content having: a neck formed from a polymeric material; andat least five threads located on the neck of the container, each of the threads defining an angled surface that is angled between 5 degrees and 7 degrees;each of the threads being formed from a polymeric material that is capable of softening when the container undergoes a hot-fill, steam retort, or pasteurization process;wherein the lug engagement surface of each of the metallic lugs is configured to engage the angled surface of each of the polymeric threads of the container to provide a seal between the metal closure and the container;the lugs of the closure being configured to more evenly distribute a sealing force about the neck of the container when the closure is coupled to the container such that when the metal closure is engaged with the plastic threads of a container that has undergone a hot-fill, steam retort, or pasteurization process deformation to the softened plastic threads caused by the metallic lugs of the metal closure is minimized or prevented. 11. The container assembly of claim 10 wherein the top wall, skirt and lugs are formed from a single integral piece of metal. 12. The container assembly of claim 10 wherein the length of each lug is between 0.7 and 0.8 inches. 13. The container assembly of claim 10 wherein the lug engagement surface of each lug has an angle that matches the thread angle. 14. The container assembly of claim 13 wherein the angle of the angled surface of the threads and the angle of the lug engagement surface is 6 degrees and 6 minutes.
