An apparatus and method is provided to shield contactless portable electronic consumer devices such as radio frequency identification devices (RFID), tokens, mini-cards, key fobs, cellular phones, smartcards, etc. from wireless interrogation. In one embodiment, a contactless portable consumer device which includes a first antenna is shielded from unauthorized wireless interrogation with a radio frequency (RF) shield. The RF shield includes electrically conductive, non-ferromagnetic material and is configured to prevent unauthorized data transfer between a second antenna external to the portable consumer device and the first antenna.

1. An apparatus comprising: a cellular phone comprising a first antenna, an electrical filter coupled to the first antenna, and a radio frequency identification (RFID) device coupled to the first antenna via the electrical filter, wherein the first antenna is configured to communicate with an author
1. An apparatus comprising: a cellular phone comprising a first antenna, an electrical filter coupled to the first antenna, and a radio frequency identification (RFID) device coupled to the first antenna via the electrical filter, wherein the first antenna is configured to communicate with an authorized reader in a frequency range, and the electrical filter is configured to filter frequencies outside the frequency range; andan RF shield comprising an electrically conductive, non-ferromagnetic material, wherein the RF shield is configured to prevent unauthorized transfer of data between a second antenna external to the cellular phone and the first antenna, and wherein the RF shield is further configured to attenuate only signals inside the frequency range passing from the second antenna to the first antenna so that signals passing through the RF shield within the frequency range are attenuated below an activation threshold for the RFID device. 2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a second RF shield that is further configured to attenuate the signals inside the frequency range passing from the second antenna to the first antenna. 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the cellular phone is configured to perform financial transactions. 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the cellular phone is configured to perform identification functions. 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the cellular phone and the RF shield are configured to be attached to an item during storage or shipment. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a second RF shield coupled to the RF shield, wherein the second RF shield is formed in a different shape and a different material from the RF shield. 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the second RF shield is adhesively attached to the RF shield. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the RF shield comprises conductive ink. 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the RF shield is coupled to a ground, and wherein the first antenna is coupled to the ground. 10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the cellular phone further comprises a memory, wherein the memory stores credit or debit card number information, and the RF shield is configured to prevent the authorized transfer of the credit or debit card number information from the cellular phone to the second antenna. 11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the cellular phone further comprises a memory, wherein the memory stores account balance information, and the RF shield is configured to prevent the authorized transfer of the account balance information from the cellular phone to the second antenna. 12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first antenna is in the form of a coil. 13. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the RF shield comprises copper. 14. A method comprising: providing an apparatus comprising (a) a cellular phone comprising a first antenna, an electrical filter coupled to the first antenna, and a radio frequency identification (RFID) device coupled to the first antenna via the electrical filter, wherein the first antenna is configured to communicate with an authorized reader in a frequency range, and the electrical filter is configured to filter frequencies outside the frequency range, and (b) an RF shield comprising an electrically conductive, non-ferromagnetic material, wherein the RF shield is configured to prevent unauthorized transfer of data between a second antenna external to the cellular phone and the first antenna, and wherein the RF shield is further configured to attenuate only signals inside the frequency range passing from the second antenna to the first antenna so that signals passing through the RF shield within the frequency range are attenuated below an activation threshold for the RFID device;receiving, at the RF shield, a signal inside of the frequency range from the second antenna; andattenuating, by the RF shield, the signal inside of the frequency range received from the second antenna, wherein the signal inside of the frequency range is attenuated below the activation threshold for the RFID device. 15. The method of claim 14 wherein the cellular phone further comprises a memory, wherein the memory stores credit card number information, and the RF shield is configured to prevent the authorized transfer of the credit card number information from the cellular phone to the second antenna. 16. The method of claim 14 wherein the RF shield is temporarily affixed to the cellular phone. 17. The method of claim 14 wherein the RF shield has a size and configuration that optimizes attenuation properties relative to a frequency of operation of the first antenna. 18. The method of claim 17 further comprising: mailing the cellular phone and the RF shield to a user. 19. The method of claim 14 further comprising mailing the cellular phone and the RF shield to a user.
