An extendable and retractable column which is formed from at least three linked sections or chains. The linked sections include a plurality of individual segments linked end to end. As the linked segments are extended, each of the individual segments of the linked chains engage individual segments of adjacent linked sections to form a column. As the linked sections are retracted, each of the individual segments of the linked sections disengage from the individual segment of the adjacent linked sections and the individual linked sections may be rolled up into a multi-sided form for compact storage.

The bale latch of claim 1 wherein the curvature of the second arcuate edge of said engagement section increases as it converges with the first arcuate edge at the tip. 3. The bale latch of claim 1 wherein one of said legs of the attachment section is constructed and arranged to be resilient so as to selectively, elastically move between a rest position and a deflected position, said deflected position changing the distance between the ends of the first and second legs. 4. The bale latch of claim 1 and wherein the attachment section further includes a panel receiving notch positioned between the second leg and the second arcuate edge of the engagement section. 5. The bale latch of claim 4 wherein the panel receiving notch is oriented transversely to the second arcuate edge. 6. The bale latch of claim 5 wherein one of said legs of the attachment section is constructed and arranged to be resilient so as to selectively, elastically move between a rest position and a deflected position, said deflected position changing the distance between the ends of the first and second legs. 7. The bale latch of claim 6 wherein at least one of said legs of the attachment section has a catch at the end of such leg. 8. The bale latch of claim 1 wherein at least one of said legs of the attachment section has a catch at the end of such leg. 9. An improved bale latch apparatus usable with extendable and retractable support columns comprising: a multiplicity of segments pivotally mounted relative to one another to form a chained section;a bale positioned adjacent the chained section and rotatably mounted for movement about a central axis, the bale constructed and arranged to allow the multiplicity of pivotally mounted segments to wind onto and off of the bale as the bale rotates about the central axis in a first and second direction, respectively, and the segments forming layers when wound onto the bale;a bale latch for use in retaining segments wound on to the bale when the segments are wound in a close fitting relationship about the bale and segments are located at different distances from the central axis of the bale, the bale latch comprising:a body having first and second spaced apart substantially flat faces;the body including an attachment section for attaching the body to a first segment of the chained section and an engagement section for latching the first segment to a second segment of the chained section, the second segment spaced outwardly a predetermined distance from the bale central axis, the predetermined distance being greater than the first segment's distance from the central axis;both the attachment section and the engagement section located wholly between the first and second flat faces of the body;the attachment section including first and second spaced apart legs positioned side by side with one another, each leg having an end, the legs being wholly between the first and second flat faces, extending in substantially the same direction and attached to the first segment of the chained section to attach the body to the first segment;the engagement section including an elongated member with spaced apart first and second arcuate edges which converge to define a tip, the second arcuate edge constructed and arranged to engage and latch with the second segment of the chained section; andthe first and second legs being oriented transverse to the first and second arcuate edges. 10. The bale latch apparatus of claim 9 wherein the curvature of the second arcuate edge of the elongated member increases as it converges with the first arcuate edge at the tip. 11. The bale latch apparatus of claim 9 wherein one of said legs of the attachment section is constructed and arranged to be resilient so as to selectively, elastically move between a rest position and a deflected position, said deflected position changing the distance between the ends of the first and second legs. 12. The bale latch apparatus of claim 9 wherein the attachment section further includes a panel receiving notch positioned between the second leg and the second arcuate edge of the engagement section. 13. The bale latch apparatus of claim 12 wherein the panel receiving notch is oriented transversely to the second arcuate edge. 14. The bale latch apparatus of claim 13 wherein one of said legs of the attachment section is constructed and arranged to be resilient so as to selectively, elastically move between a rest position and a deflected position, said deflected position changing the distance between the ends of the first and second legs. 15. The bale latch apparatus of claim 14 wherein at least one of said legs of the attachment section has a catch at the end of such leg. 16. The bale latch apparatus of claim 9 wherein at least one of said legs of the attachment section has a catch at the end of such leg. 17. The bale latch apparatus of claim 9 wherein said first segment is spaced from the second segment along the chained section with at least one additional segment of the chained section being located between the first and second segments of the chained section. 18. An improved bale latch apparatus usable with extendable and retractable support columns comprising: a multiplicity of segments pivotally mounted relative to one another to form a chained section;a bale positioned adjacent the chained section and rotatably mounted for movement about a central axis, the bale constructed and arranged to allow the multiplicity of pivotally mounted segments to wind onto and off of the bale as the bale rotates about the central axis in a first and second direction, respectively, and the segments forming layers when wound onto the bale;a bale latch for use in retaining the segments wound about the bale in close fitting relationship about the bale when the layered segments are located at different distances from the central axis of the bale, the bale latch comprising:a body having first and second spaced apart faces;the body including an attachment section attached to a first segment of the chained section and an engagement section for latching the first segment to a second segment of the chained section, the second segment being spaced outwardly a predetermined distance from the bale central axis, the predetermined distance being greater than the first segment's distance from the central axis, both the attachment section and the engagement section located wholly between the first and second faces of the body;the engagement section including an elongated member with spaced apart first and second edges which converge to define a tip, the second edge constructed and arranged to engage and latch with the second segment of the chained section. 19.
