An apparatus and method for obtaining a biometric image is disclosed, which may comprise: providing a biometric image sensor which may comprise one of a one dimensional swiped sensor array, a two dimensional swiped sensor array and a two dimensional placement sensor array, each of which may comprise a capacitive gap sensor measuring a change in a transmitted signal received as a received signal, based upon changes in the transmitted signal passing through a biometric, the biometric image sensor may be one of mounted on a host device or cooperating with the host device; providing a biometric placement positioning prompt on a display on the host device, which prompt may indicate whether a current positioning of the biometric is proper for initiating biometric imaging by the biometric image sensor, e.g., indicating a current positioning of the biometric and the desired positioning of the biometric.

A method for obtaining a biometric image, comprising: providing a biometric image sensor comprising one of a one dimensional swiped sensor array, a two dimensional swiped sensor array, and a two dimensional placement sensor array, the sensor array comprising a capacitive gap sensor measuring a change in a transmitted signal received as a received signal, wherein the measured change is based upon changes in the transmitted signal passing through a biometric in the vicinity of the sensor array, the biometric image sensor being one of mounted on a host device or cooperating with the host device;estimating an angle of the biometric;providing a biometric placement positioning prompt on a visual display device on the host device, the prompt indicating whether a current positioning of the biometric is proper, based on at least the angle of the biometric, for initiating biometric imaging by the biometric image sensor. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the indicating whether the current positioning of the biometric is proper comprises indicating on the visual display device on the host device a proper positioning for the biometric and the current positioning of the biometric. 3. The method of claim 2 further comprising: providing a movement prompt on the visual display device indicating a direction of movement of the biometric to change the positioning of the biometric from the current positioning to the proper positioning. 4. The method of claim 3 further comprising: providing to a user of the host device an imaging commencing prompt to take an imaging action from one of swiping the biometric or leaving the biometric in a present positioning placement for imaging of the biometric to occur by the biometric image sensor. 5. The method of claim 2 further comprising: indicating the current positioning of the biometric when the biometric is at least one of partially lifted from the proper positioning or tilted at an angle to the proper positioning. 6. The method of claim 1 further comprising: providing a movement prompt on the display, wherein the movement prompt comprises a display on the visual display device of the host device of a top view of the biometric image sensor indicating the proper positioning of the biometric and the current positioning of the biometric, with the movement prompt indicating a direction of movement of the biometric to change the positioning of the biometric from the current positioning to the proper positioning. 7. The method of claim 3 wherein the movement prompt comprises one of an audio message and a text message. 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the biometric comprises a fingerprint. 9. The method of claim 8 further comprising: providing an indication of the biometric image sensor having successfully acquired a fingerprint image by displaying the fingerprint image on the display. 10. The method of claim 5 further comprising: providing a repeat prompt on the visual display device in response to the biometric image sensor not successfully acquiring a biometric image after a user takes an imaging action. 11. A biometric image sensor, comprising: one of a one dimensional swiped sensor array, a two dimensional swiped sensor array, and a two dimensional placement sensor array, the sensor array comprising a capacitive gap sensor measuring a change in a transmitted signal received as a received signal, wherein the measured changed is based upon changes in the transmitted signal passing through a biometric in the vicinity of the sensor array, to detect biometric characteristics of the biometric in the vicinity of the sensor array, the biometric image sensor being one of mounted on a host device or cooperating with the host device;a visual display device on the host device; anda controller controlling the visual display device to provide a biometric placement positioning prompt, the prompt indicating whether a current positioning of the biometric is proper, based on at least an estimate of an angle of the biometric, for initiating biometric imaging by the biometric image sensor. 12. The biometric image sensor of claim 11 wherein the indicating whether the current positioning of the biometric is proper comprises the controller displaying on the visual display device on the host device a proper positioning for the biometric and the current positioning of the biometric. 13. The biometric image sensor of claim 12 further comprising: the controller displaying on the visual display device a movement prompt indicating a direction of movement of the biometric to change the positioning of the biometric from the current positioning to the proper positioning. 14. The biometric image sensor of claim 13 further comprising: the controller providing to a user of the host device an imaging commencing prompt to take an imaging action from one of swiping the biometric or leaving the biometric in the present positioning placement for imaging of the biometric to occur by the biometric image sensor. 15. The biometric image sensor of claim 12 further comprising: the controller providing on the visual display device an indication of the current positioning of the biometric when the biometric is at least one of partially lifted from the proper positioning or tilted at an angle to the proper positioning. 16. The biometric image sensor of claim 13 wherein the movement prompt comprises the controller providing on the visual display device of the host device a display of a top view of the biometric image sensor indicating the proper positioning of the biometric and the current positioning of the biometric, with the movement prompt indicating a direction of movement of the biometric to change the positioning of the biometric from the current positioning to the proper positioning. 17. The biometric image sensor of claim 11 further comprising: the controller providing a movement prompt on the display, wherein the movement prompt comprises a display on the visual display device of the host device of a top view of the biometric image sensor indicating the proper positioning of the biometric and the current positioning of the biometric, with the movement prompt indicating a direction of movement of the biometric to change the positioning of the biometric from the current positioning to the proper positioning. 18. The biometric image sensor of claim 12 wherein the movement prompt comprises one of an audio message and a text message. 19. The biometric image sensor of claim 11 wherein the biometric comprises a fingerprint. 20. The biometric image sensor of claim 19 further comprising: the controller providing an indication of the biometric image sensor having successfully acquired a fingerprint image by displaying the fingerprint image on the display. 21. The biometric image sensor of claim 14 further comprising: the controller providing a repeat prompt on the visual display device in response to the biometric image sensor not successfully acquiring a biometric image after the user takes the imaging action. 22. A tangible non-transitory machine readable medium storing software that, when executed on a computing device, causes the computing device to perform a method comprising: providing a biometric placement positioning prompt on a visual display device on a host device, the prompt indicating whether a current positioning of the biometric is proper, based on at least an estimate of an angle of the biometric, for initiating biometric imaging by a biometric image sensor,wherein the biometric image sensor comprises one of a one dimensional swiped sensor array, a two dimensional swiped sensor array, and a two dimensional placement sensor array, the sensory array comprising a capacitive gap sensor measuring a change in a transmitted signal received as a received signal, wherein the measured change is based upon changes in the transmitted signal passing through a biometric in the vicinity of the sensor array, the biometric image sensor being one of mounted on the host device or cooperating with the host device. 23. The method of claim 1 wherein estimating an angle of the biometric further comprises determining an area of the biometric image sensor covered by the biometric.
