An apparatus and method for introducing portals into bone is described herein. An example apparatus for introducing portals into bone includes a handle, a base, and a driving member. The driving member can be made to project past the base by operating the handle. The base is detachable from the handle. The apparatus also includes a guide coupled at a first end to the handle and at a second end to the base. The base is detachably coupled to the guide. A base coupling detachably coupling the base to the guide includes an actuating member movable between a coupled configuration wherein the base is coupled to the guide and an uncoupled configuration wherein the base is released from the guide. The actuating member is arranged so that motion of the handle toward the base moves the actuating member from the coupled configuration to the uncoupled configuration.

1. An apparatus for introducing a bone portal into a bone of a subject, the apparatus comprising: a handle;a base detachably coupled to the handle by a mechanism comprising a base coupling,a driving member projecting from a carrier assembly that is slidably received within the handle;a ratchet operatively coupled between the carrier assembly and the handle, the ratchet oriented to permit the carrier assembly to move toward a distal end of the handle and to resist motion of the carrier assembly away from the distal end of the handle; and,a release mechanism operative to block the carrier assembly from moving toward the distal end of the handle until the release mechanism is triggered;wherein the driving member is movable between a first position wherein the driving member is retracted behind the base to a second position wherein the driving member projects past the base by operating the handle and the base is detachable from the handle by release of the base coupling, wherein the base coupling comprises an actuating member arranged so that operation of the handle to move the driving member to its second position results in the actuating member being moved to uncouple the base from the handle. 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the release mechanism comprises: a split ring projecting radially from the carrier assembly to engage an abutting surface of the handle, the abutting surface being between the split ring and the distal end of the handle, the split ring having a gap between two ends thereof;a sliding block at least partly within the gap of the split ring, the sliding block slideably moveable relative to the split ring; anda bone probe coupled to the sliding block, wherein displacement of the bone probe actuates displacement of the sliding block relative to the split ring and thereby allows the split ring to collapse and to pass the abutting surface of the handle. 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the ratchet comprises a pawl biased to engage features in a bore of the handle. 4. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an infusion tube assembly supported on the driving member, the infusion tube assembly comprising a tube having a fitting at a distal end of the tube and a bone portal at an opposing proximal end of the tube. 5. Apparatus for introducing a bone portal into a bone, the apparatus comprising: a handle;a carrier assembly slidably received within the handle;a release mechanism operative to block motion of the carrier toward a distal end of the handle until the release mechanism is triggered, the release mechanism comprising a member contacting the carrier assembly and the handle, a trigger member and a bone probe coupled to move the trigger member in response to motion of the bone probe toward the distal end of the handle, wherein the movement of the trigger member triggers the release mechanism;a stylet projecting from the carrier assembly; anda one-way mechanism connected between the carrier assembly and the handle, the one-way mechanism operative to permit the carrier assembly to move toward a distal end of the handle and to resist motion of the carrier assembly away from the distal end of the handle. 6. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the one-way mechanism comprises a pawl carried by the carrier assembly and biased to engage features in a bore in the handle. 7. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the stylet is pivotally mounted to the carrier assembly and is pivotable away from the bone probe about an axis transverse to a longitudinal axis of the handle. 8. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein: the member of the release mechanism comprises a split ring projecting radially from the carrier assembly to engage an abutting surface of the handle, the abutting surface located between the split ring and the distal end of the handle, the split ring having a gap between two ends thereof; andthe trigger member comprises a sliding block at least partly within the gap of the split ring, the sliding block slideably moveable relative to the split ring;wherein displacement of the bone probe actuates displacement of the sliding block relative to the split ring and thereby allows the split ring to collapse and to pass the abutting surface of the handle. 9. The apparatus of claim 5, further comprising an infusion tube assembly supported on the stylet, the infusion tube assembly comprising a tube having a fitting at a distal end of the tube and a bone portal at an opposing proximal end of the tube. 10. The apparatus according to claim 5, further comprising a tubular shield telescopically-received within the handle, the tubular shield biased to project outwardly from the handle away from the distal end of the handle, the stylet extending within the tubular shield. 11. The apparatus according to claim 10, further comprising a base mounted at a proximal end of the shield. 12. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the base comprises at least one guide feature to indicate a desired alignment with at least one anatomical feature of a subject. 13. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the base is detachable from the proximal end of the shield. 14. The apparatus according to claim 13, further comprising an adhesive on the base for attachment of the base to a subject and an attachment for holding a strain relief member on the base. 15. The apparatus according to claim 14, further comprising an infusion tube assembly mounted on the stylet, the infusion tube assembly comprising: a tube having a fitting at a distal end of the tube and a bone portal at a proximal end thereof opposed to the distal end of the tube anda strain relief member coupled to the tube. 16. The apparatus according to claim 10, wherein the handle comprises a sleeve that defines a bore in which the carrier assembly is slidably mounted, the shield is telescopically received in a space between the sleeve and a radially-outward part of the handle, and the shield is biased away from the distal end of the handle by a spring located in the space. 17. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the member of the release mechanism is a deformable member that is retained by the trigger member in a configuration in which the deformable member prevents relative motion of the carrier assembly toward the distal end of the handle, wherein motion of the trigger member in response to motion of the bone probe permits the deformable member to deform so as to permit the carrier assembly to move toward the distal end of the handle. 18. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the carrier assembly comprises an elastomeric base and the stylet is attached to the elastomeric base. 19. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the bone probe is coupled to the carriage assembly by a mounting base and the mounting base formed with a bend toward the stylet such that the mounting base holds the bone probe closer to the stylet than a location at which the mounting base connects to the carriage assembly. 20. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the one-way mechanism comprises a ratchet mechanism engaging between the carrier assembly and a bore within the handle.
