An apparatus for handling cards has a dispensing end. The dispensing end has a base plate for supporting cards being manually removed. An upper plate with a U-shaped opening is spaced above the base plate and defines a slot for cards to pass. First and second spaced apart card guides define side edges of the slot. The first card guide is shorter than the second card guide, creating an offset in a first direction of travel of cards being removed. A method of removing cards is also disclosed, enabling movement of cards in at least two directions due to the presence of a card guide offset.

1. A method of delivering a playing card from a playing card handling device, the method comprising: receiving a playing card from an interior of the playing card handling device into a playing card delivery area of the playing card handling device, the playing card delivery area defined by an upper plate with a finger slot, a base plate, a first card guide, and a second card guide spaced apart from the first card guide, the first and second card guides defining an output slot configured for slidably removing playing cards, the second card guide extending further in a first direction of travel of cards than the first card guide;a dealer moving a leading edge of the playing card within the output slot in the first direction of travel until a trailing edge of the playing card clears a curved inner surface at a terminal end of the first card guide; andthe dealer moving the playing card in at least one second, different direction of travel while a portion of the playing card remains under the upper plate. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one second, different direction of travel is perpendicular to the first direction of travel. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one second, different direction of travel is not parallel to the first direction of travel. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the dealer moving the playing card in the at least one second, different direction of travel comprises the dealer moving the playing card toward the dealer after a trailing edge of the playing card clears the terminal end of the first card guide. 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising shuffling a set of playing cards with the playing card handling device, wherein causing the playing card to be moved into the playing card delivery area comprises moving the playing card from a shuffled set of playing cards into the playing card delivery area. 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising reading the playing card with a card-reading sensor of the playing card handling device prior to the dealer moving the playing card in the at least one second, different direction of travel. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein reading the playing card with the card-reading sensor of the playing card handling device comprises reading the playing card with a contact image sensor. 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising preventing more than one card at a time from passing through the playing card delivery area with a card limiter plate. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the dealer moving the leading edge of the playing card in the first direction of travel and the dealer moving the playing card in the at least one second, different direction of travel comprises the dealer moving the playing card along an arcuate path. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the dealer moving the leading edge of the playing card in the first direction of travel and the dealer moving the playing card in the at least one second, different direction of travel comprises the dealer moving the playing card along an L-shaped path. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the dealer moving the leading edge of the playing card in the first direction of travel and the dealer moving the playing card in at least one second, different direction of travel comprises the dealer moving the playing card along an irregular path. 12. A method of delivering a playing card from a playing card handling device, the method comprising: moving a playing card from an interior of the playing card handling device to a playing card delivery area of the playing card handling device, the playing card delivery area defined by an upper plate with a U-shaped opening, a base plate, a first card guide, and a second card guide spaced apart from the first card guide, the first card guide and the second card guide defining an output slot through which playing cards can be slidably removed, the first card guide including a curved inner edge at a terminal end of the first card guide, the second card guide extending further in a first direction of travel of cards than the first card guide;moving a leading edge of the playing card within the output slot in the first direction of travel until a trailing edge of the playing card clears the terminal end of the first card guide; andmoving the leading edge of the playing card in a second, different direction of travel while a portion of the playing card remains in the playing card delivery area. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein moving the leading edge of the playing card in the second, different direction of travel comprises moving the leading edge of the playing card in a perpendicular direction relative to the first direction of travel. 14. The method of claim 12, wherein moving the leading edge of the playing card in the second, different direction of travel while the portion of the playing card remains in the playing card delivery area comprises maintaining the portion of the playing card under the upper plate while moving the leading edge of the playing card in the second, different direction of travel. 15. The method of claim 12, wherein the second card guide includes a curved inner edge at a terminal end of the second card guide. 16. A method of delivering a playing card from a playing card handling device, comprising: moving a playing card in a first direction of travel through a card output area of the playing card handling device, the card output area being defined by an upper plate, a base plate, a first card guide, and a second card guide spaced apart from the first card guide, the second card guide extending further in the first direction of travel than the first card guide;moving the playing card at least partially within the card output area in a second direction of travel after a trailing edge of the playing card clears a curved inner surface at a terminal end of the first card guide. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein moving the playing card in the second direction of travel after the trailing edge of the playing card clears the first card guide comprises moving the playing card in a direction of travel that is perpendicular to the first direction of travel. 18. The method of claim 16, wherein moving the playing card in the first direction of travel through the card output area comprises a dealer manipulating the playing card through a finger slot formed in the upper plate.
