A system is described for maintaining synchrony of operations among a plurality of devices that have independent clocking arrangements. The system includes a task distribution device that distributes tasks to a synchrony group comprising a plurality of devices that are to perform the tasks distributed by the task distribution device in synchrony. The task distribution device distributes each task to the members of the synchrony group over a network. Each task is associated with a time stamp that indicates a time, relative to a clock maintained by the task distribution device, at which the members of the synchrony group are to execute the task. Each member of the synchrony group periodically obtains from the task distribution device an indication of the current time indicated by its clock, determines a time differential between the task distribution device's clock and its respective clock and determines therefrom a time at which, according to its respective clock, the time stamp indicates that it is to execute the task.

1. A method comprising: receiving, by a first playback device, control information via a network interface configured to interface the first playback device with a network;in response to receiving the control information via the network interface, entering, by the first playback device, into a synchrony group with a second playback device; andafter entering into the synchrony group with the second playback device, (i) receiving, by the first playback device from the second playback device, audio information, playback timing information, and device clock information of the second playback device and (ii) playing back, by the first playback device, the audio information in synchrony with the second playback device using the playback timing information and the device clock information, wherein the first and second playback devices remain independently clocked during playback. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the control information via the network interface comprises receiving the control information from the second playback device. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the control information via the network interface comprises receiving the control information from a controller device. 4. The method of claim 1, the method further comprising: before receiving the control information, indicating via the network that the first playback device is a standalone playback device; andafter entering into the synchrony group with the second playback device, indicating via the network that the first playback device is a member of the synchrony group. 5. The method of claim 1, the method further comprising: transmitting status information to the second playback device. 6. The method of claim 1, the method further comprising: transmitting status information to a controller device. 7. A first zone player, comprising: a network interface configured to interface the first zone player with a network;one or more processors; anda tangible, non-transitory computer-readable memory having instructions stored thereon that when executed by the one or more processors cause the first zone player to: receive control information via the network interface;in response to receiving the control information via the network interface, enter into a synchrony group with a second zone player; andafter entering into the synchrony group with the second zone player, (i) receive, from the second zone player, audio information, playback timing information, and device clock information of the second zone player and (ii) play back the audio information in synchrony with the second zone player using the playback timing information and the device clock information, wherein the first and second zone players remain independently clocked during playback. 8. The first zone player of claim 7, wherein receiving the control information via the network interface comprises receiving the control information from the second zone player. 9. The first zone player of claim 7, wherein receiving the control information via the network interface comprises receiving the control information from a controller device. 10. The first zone player of claim 7, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the first zone player to (i) before receiving the control information, indicate via the network that the first zone player is a standalone zone player and (ii) after entering into the synchrony group with the second zone player, indicate via the network that the first zone player is a member of the synchrony group. 11. The first zone player of claim 7, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, also cause the first zone player to transmit status information to the second zone player. 12. The first zone player of claim 7, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, also cause the first zone player to transmit status information to a controller device. 13. The first zone player of claim 7, wherein the network comprises a local area network (LAN). 14. Tangible, non-transitory computer-readable memory comprising instructions encoded thereon, wherein the instructions, when executed by one or more processors, cause a first zone player to perform a method comprising: receiving control information via a network interface configured to interface the first zone player with a network;in response to receiving the control information via the network interface, entering into a synchrony group with a second zone player; andafter entering into the synchrony group with the second zone player, (i) receiving, from the second zone player, audio information, playback timing information, and device clock information of the second zone player and (ii) playing back the audio information in synchrony with the second zone player using the playback timing information and the device clock information, wherein the first and second zone players remain independently clocked during playback. 15. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable memory of claim 14, wherein receiving the control information via the network interface comprises receiving the control information from the second zone player. 16. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable memory of claim 14, wherein receiving the control information via the network interface comprises receiving the control information from a controller device. 17. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable memory of claim 14, the method further comprising: before receiving the control information, indicating via the network that the first zone player is a standalone zone player; andafter entering into the synchrony group with the second zone player, indicating via the network that the first zone player is a member of the synchrony group. 18. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable memory of claim 14, the method further comprising: transmitting status information to the second zone player. 19. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable memory of claim 14, the method further comprising: transmitting status information to a controller device. 20. The tangible, non-transitory computer-readable memory of claim 14, wherein the network comprises a local area network (LAN).
