A gaming system comprising: a plurality of input device including: (i) an acceptor, and(ii) a cashout device;at least one display device;at least one processor; andat least one memory device which stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the at least one processor, causes the at least one processor to operate with the plurality of input devices and the at least one display device to: (a) if a physical item is received via the acceptor, establish a credit balance based, at least in part, on a monetary value associated with the received physical item,(b) for each of a plurality of reels, display one of a plurality of different symbols at each of a plurality of symbol display positions, wherein: (i) each of the plurality of reels includes a plurality of reel positions,(ii) each of the plurality of reel positions is associated with at least two of the plurality of different symbols,(iii) one of the symbols associated with each reel position of each reel is initially displayed, and(iv) at least one of the symbols of each reel position of each reel is not initially displayed at any of the symbol display positions,(c) determine if any of the displayed symbols form any winning symbol combinations,(d) if at least one winning symbol combination is formed: (i) determine an award associated with the formed winning symbol combination, and(ii) display the determined award associated with the formed winning symbol combination,(e) independent of any winning symbol combination being formed, if a triggering event occurs: (i) at at least one of the symbol display positions, replace the symbol displayed at said symbol display position with another one of the symbols associated with said reel position of said reel of said replaced symbol such that: (A) said replaced symbol is no longer displayed at said symbol display position,(B) the other one of the symbols associated with said reel position of said reel of said replaced symbol is displayed at said symbol display position, and(C) if at least one of the symbols displayed at at least one of the symbol display positions is a wild symbol, not replace said at least one wild symbol,(ii) determine if any of the displayed symbols form any winning symbol combinations, and(iii) if at least one winning symbol combination is formed: (A) determine an award associated with the formed winning symbol combination, and(B) display the determined award associated with the formed winning symbol combination, and(f) if a cashout input is received via the cashout device, cause an initiation of any payout associated with the credit balance. 2. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein when executed by the at least one processor if the triggering event occurs, the plurality of instructions cause the at least one processor to, replace, at a plurality of the symbol display positions, the symbol displayed at said symbol display position with another one of the symbols associated with said reel position of said reel of said replaced symbol. 3. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein when executed by the at least one processor if the triggering event occurs, the plurality of instructions cause the at least one processor to repeat (e)(i) to (e)(iii) at least once. 4. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein a plurality of the symbols of each reel position of each reel are not initially displayed at any of the symbol display positions. 5. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein each of the symbols of at least one of the reel positions of at least one of the reels are different. 6. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein at least one of any determined awards include at least one selected from the group consisting of: a quantity of monetary credits, a quantity of non-monetary credits, a quantity of promotional credits, and a quantity of player tracking points. 7. A method of operating a gaming system, said method comprising: (a) for each of a plurality of reels, causing at least one display device to display one of a plurality of different symbols at each of a plurality of symbol display positions, wherein: (i) each of the plurality of reels includes a plurality of reel positions,(ii) each of the plurality of reel positions is associated with at least two of the plurality of different symbols,(iii) one of the symbols associated with each reel position of each reel is initially displayed, and(iv) at least one of the symbols of each reel position of each reel is not initially displayed at any of the symbol display positions,(b) causing at least one processor to execute a plurality of instructions to determine if any of the displayed symbols form any winning symbol combinations,(c) responsive to at least one winning symbol combination being formed: (i) causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine an award associated with the formed winning symbol combination, and(ii) causing the at least one display device to display the determined award associated with the formed winning symbol combination, wherein a credit balance is increasable based on any determined award associated with the formed winning symbol combination, said credit balance being increasable via an acceptor of a physical item associated with a monetary value, and said credit balance being decreasable via a cashout device configured to receive an input to cause an initiation of a payout associated with the credit balance, and(d) independent of any winning symbol combination being formed, responsive to a triggering event occurring: (i) at at least one of the symbol display positions, causing the at least one display device to display a replacement of the symbol displayed at said symbol display position with another one of the symbols associated with said reel position of said reel of said replaced symbol such that: (A) said replaced symbol is no longer displayed at said symbol display position,(B) the other one of the symbols associated with said reel position of said reel of said replaced symbol is displayed at said symbol display position, and(C) responsive to at least one of the symbols displayed at at least one of the symbol display positions being a wild symbol, not replace said at least one wild symbol,(ii) causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine if any of the displayed symbols form any winning symbol combinations, and(iii) responsive to at least one winning symbol combination being formed: (A) causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine an award associated with the formed winning symbol combination, and(B) causing the at least one display device to display the determined award associated with the formed winning symbol combination, wherein the credit balance is increasable based on any determined award associated with the formed winning symbol combination. 8. The method of claim 7, which includes, if the triggering event occurs, causing the at least one display device to display a replacement, at a plurality of the symbol display positions, of the symbol displayed at said symbol display position with another one of the symbols associated with said reel position of said reel of said replaced symbol. 9. The method of claim 7, which includes repeating (d)(i) to (d)(iii) at least once. 10. The method of claim 7, wherein a plurality of the symbols of each reel position of each reel are not initially displayed at any of the symbol display positions. 11. The method of claim 7, wherein each of the symbols of at least one of the reel positions of at least one of the reels are different. 12. The method of claim 7, wherein at least one of any determined awards include at least one selected from the group consisting of: a quantity of monetary credits, a quantity of non-monetary credits, a quantity of promotional credits, and a quantity of player tracking points. 13. The method of claim 7, which is provided through a data network. 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the data network is an internet. 15. A gaming system comprising: a processor; anda memory device which stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor, causes the processor to: (a) for each of a plurality of reels, cause a display device of a mobile device to display one of a plurality of different symbols at each of a plurality of symbol display positions, wherein each of the plurality of reels includes a plurality of reel positions, each of the plurality of reel positions is associated with at least two of the plurality of different symbols, one of the symbols associated with each reel position of each reel is initially displayed, and at least one of the symbols of each reel position of each reel is not initially displayed at any of the symbol display positions,(b) determine if any of the displayed symbols form any winning symbol combinations,(c) responsive to at least one winning symbol combination being formed: (i) determine an award associated with the formed winning symbol combination, and(ii) cause the display device of the mobile device to display the determined award associated with the formed winning symbol combination, and(d) independent if any winning symbol combination is formed, responsive to a triggering event occurring: (i) at at least one of the symbol display positions, cause the display device of the mobile device to display a replacement of the symbol displayed at said symbol display position with another one of the symbols associated with said reel position of said reel of said replaced symbol such that said replaced symbol is no longer displayed at said symbol display position, the other one of the symbols associated with said reel position of said reel of said replaced symbol is displayed at said symbol display position, and responsive to at least one of the symbols displayed at at least one of the symbol display positions being a wild symbol, not replace said at least one wild symbol,(ii) determine if any of the displayed symbols form any winning symbol combinations, and(iii) responsive to at least one winning symbol combination being formed: (A) determine an award associated with the formed winning symbol combination, and(B) cause the display device of the mobile device to display the determined award associated with the formed winning symbol combination. 16. The gaming system of claim 15, wherein when executed by the processor responsive to the triggering event occurring, the plurality of instructions cause the processor to, cause the display device of the mobile device to display the replacement, at a plurality of the symbol display positions, of the symbol displayed at said symbol display position with another one of the symbols associated with said reel position of said reel of said replaced symbol. 17. The gaming system of claim 15, wherein when executed by the processor responsive to the triggering event occurring, the plurality of instructions cause the processor to repeat (e)(i) to (e)(iii) at least once. 18. The gaming system of claim 15, wherein a plurality of the symbols of each reel position of each reel are not initially displayed at any of the symbol display positions. 19. The gaming system of claim 15, wherein each of the symbols of at least one of the reel positions of at least one of the reels are different. 20. The gaming system of claim 15, wherein at least one of any determined awards include at least one selected from the group consisting of: a quantity of monetary credits, a quantity of non-monetary credits, a quantity of promotional credits, and a quantity of player tracking points.
