Apparatus for the delivery of an electrical field which facilitates the intracellular delivery of a therapeutic agent to a predetermined site within the tissue of a patient. The apparatus will comprise a plurality of penetrating electrodes arranged in a predetermined spatial relationship, each electrode with a cross sectional area contributing to the total cross sectional area of all electrodes, and structural means incorporating an inanimate source of energy operatively connected to the plurality of electrodes for deploying the electrodes, wherein the source of energy is sufficient to impart a force of at least 1000 pounds per square inch (0.7 kilogram per square millimeter) of total cross sectional area of all electrodes at the initiation of the deployment of the electrodes. The apparatus will also comprise means for generating an electrical field which facilitates the intracellular delivery of a therapeutic agent, which means is operatively connected to said electrodes at least in their deployed state.

A method comprising: administering a therapeutic agent to a predetermined site within the tissue of a patient by: loading the therapeutic agent into an apparatus comprising: a) a plurality of penetrating electrodes arranged in a predetermined spatial relationship, each electrode with a cross sectional area contributing to a total cross sectional area of all electrodes;b) an applicator housing an inanimate source of energy operatively connected to said plurality of electrodes, and wherein said source of energy is configured to provide a force sufficient to rapidly insert the electrodes; andc) an electrical field generator operatively connected to said electrodes at least in their deployed state; andd) at least one cantilevered extension of a cartridge that engages an injection drive mechanism of said applicator to passively prime said inanimate source of energy when said cartridge is inserted into said applicator;positioning the apparatus against the patient;deploying the electrodes using the source of energy;generating an electric field between the electrodes at the predetermined site; anddelivering the therapeutic agent to the predetermined site;wherein the administering does not result in tenting of the skin of the patient or significant distortion of the electrodes. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the apparatus is configured to accept a fluid reservoir for containing the therapeutic agent said reservoir operatively connected to at least one injection orifice. 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the reservoir and orifice comprise a needle and syringe. 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the syringe is provided pre-filled with the therapeutic agent. 5. The method of claim 2 wherein the reservoir comprises a glass vial. 6. The method of claim 2 wherein the reservoir and orifice comprise a subassembly that can be separated from the source of energy. 7. The method of claim 2 wherein the electrodes, reservoir, and orifice are housed within a single subassembly that can be separated from the source of energy. 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the reservoir is provided pre-filled with the therapeutic agent. 9. The method of claim 2, wherein the fluid reservoir comprises a dual chamber reservoir. 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising resuspending a lyophilized therapeutic agent in the dual chamber reservoir prior to the delivering of said therapeutic agent. 11. The method of claim 1 wherein the source of energy to deploy the electrodes is at least one spring. 12. The method of claim 1 wherein the source of energy to deploy the electrodes is at least one compressed gas. 13. The method of claim 1 wherein the source of energy to deploy the electrodes is a linear motor. 14. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrodes comprise a subassembly that can be separated from the source of energy. 15. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrodes comprise a conductive metal coated with a conductive, electrochemically stable compound. 16. The method of claim 15 wherein said conductive, electrochemically stable compound is selected from the group consisting of: titanium nitride, platinum, platinum iridium alloys, and iridium oxide. 17. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrical field generator is configured to induce an electrical field of from approximately 50 to approximately 300 V/cm between at least two of said electrodes. 18. The method of claim 1 wherein the electrical field generator is configured to generate said electric field for a duration of from approximately 1 microsecond to approximately 100 milliseconds and at a frequency of from approximately 0.1 Hertz to approximately 1 megahertz between at least two of said electrodes. 19. The method of claim 1, wherein the apparatus is a single use apparatus. 20. The method of claim 1, wherein said apparatus is configured to provide an initial implant force of at least 2000 pounds per square inch (1.4 kilograms per square millimeter) of the total cross sectional area of all electrodes and a terminal implant force of at least 750 pounds of force per square inch (0.5 kilograms per square millimeter) of the total cross sectional area of all electrodes. 21. The method of claim 1, wherein the force provided by the source of energy is at least 1000 pounds per square inch (0.7 kg/square millimeter) of the total cross sectional area of all electrodes.
