In some implementations, short-range low-power wireless communication of analyte information may include receiving an electromagnetic wireless communication signal and harvesting energy from the electromagnetic wireless communication signal. In some implementations, short-range low-power wireless communication of analyte information may include enabling capabilities associated with an external sensor in response to detecting the external sensor. In some implementations, short-range low-power wireless communication of analyte information may include detecting an analyte sample; determining an analyte concentration associated with the detected analyte sample; and transmitting an indication of the analyte concentration to an external device.

An apparatus, comprising: a housing;a memory unit having computer executable instructions stored thereon;a wireless communication interface;anda processor configured to execute the computer executable instructions stored in the memory unit, wherein execution of the computer executable instructions causes the processor to: cause a search for an external sensor while one or more user interface (UI) capabilities of the apparatus are disabled, the one or more UI capabilities being associated with the external sensor, wherein the search for the external sensor includes wireless transmission of a signal adapted to detect the external sensor, andin response to detection of the external sensor, enable one or more disabled UI capabilities associated with the external sensor and cause display of an analyte concentration associated with a measurement made by the external sensor. 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the wireless communication interface is configured to perform wireless communication according to a Bluetooth or a Bluetooth Low-Energy communication protocol. 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the transmission of the signal occurs according to the Bluetooth or Bluetooth Low-Energy communication protocol. 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the transmission of the signal occurs for a determined period of time. 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein execution of the computer executable instructions further causes the processor to terminate the transmission of the signal in response to not detecting the external sensor within the determined period of time. 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the transmission of the signal occurs in response to powering on the apparatus. 7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the external sensor includes a portion positioned through a skin surface of a user in fluid contact with a bodily fluid of the user. 8. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a monitor adapted to analyze fluid on a test strip. 9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein capabilities associated with the monitor adapted to analyze fluid on the test strip are enabled while the one or more UI capabilities associated with the external sensor are disabled. 10. A method for enabling one or more user interface (UI) capabilities of an apparatus, wherein the UI capabilities are associated with an external sensor, the method comprising: searching for the external sensor while the one or more UI capabilities associated with the external sensor are disabled, wherein searching for the external sensor includes transmitting a signal adapted to detect the external sensor; andin response to detecting the external sensor, enabling one or more disabled UI capabilities associated with the external sensor and causing display of an analyte concentration associated with a measurement made by the external sensor. 11. The method of claim 10, further comprising performing, by a wireless communication interface of the apparatus, wireless communication according to a Bluetooth or a Bluetooth Low-Energy communication protocol. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein transmitting the signal includes using the Bluetooth or Bluetooth Low-Energy communication protocol. 13. The method of claim 10, wherein transmitting the signal occurs for a determined period of time. 14. The method of claim 13, further comprising terminating the transmission of the signal in response to not detecting the external sensor within the determined period of time. 15. The method of claim 10, wherein transmitting the signal occurs in response to powering on the apparatus. 16. The method of claim 10, wherein the external sensor includes a portion positioned through a skin surface of a user in fluid contact with a bodily fluid of the user. 17. The method of claim 10, wherein the apparatus includes a monitor adapted to analyze fluid on a test strip. 18. The method of claim 17, wherein capabilities associated with the monitor adapted to analyze fluid on the test strip are enabled while the one or more UI capabilities associated with the external sensor are disabled.
