A control system for a vehicle door includes a power assist device coupled between a door and a door opening of the vehicle and a sensor. The system further includes a controller that receives a signal from the sensor, identifies a recognized user from image data within the signal, interprets a control gesture by the recognized user from video data within the signal, and causes the power assist device to move the door in response to the control gesture.

1. A vehicle, comprising: a door rotatably coupled with a door opening;a power assist device coupled between the door and the door opening;a sensor; anda controller: receiving a signal from the sensor;identifying a first gesture by a user from a second set of data within the signal;interpreting the first gesture as one of a door open command and a door close command by comparison of a movement of a tracked body part of a user to stored data relating respectively to the door open command and the door close command, wherein the stored data includes a first movement path, a first tolerance range from the first movement path, and a second tolerance range from the first movement path that is larger than the first tolerance range and the comparison of the movement of the tracked body part to the stored data includes determining if the movement is within the first tolerance range from the first movement path;adjusting the first movement path in response to the movement being outside of the first tolerance range and within the second tolerance range on a first side of the first movement path over a predetermined number of repetitions; andcausing the power assist device to move the door to one of an open condition with respect to the opening in response to the door open command and a closed condition with respect to the door in response to the door close command. 2. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein the sensor is one of a camera, an optical sensor, a capacitive sensor, a resistive sensor, an infrared sensor, a surface acoustic wave sensor, and a proximity sensor. 3. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein the controller further identifies a recognized user from image data and interprets the control gesture from the user as being from the recognized user, the system further including a user-interface: receiving information related to at least one identifying characteristic;associating the at least one identifying characteristic with the first recognized user; andcommunicating the at least one identifying characteristic associated with the first recognized user to the controller. 4. The vehicle of claim 3, wherein the information related to the at least one identifying characteristic is received from the controller and includes at least a portion of the image data from the signal received from the sensor. 5. The vehicle of claim 1, further including a user interface, wherein: the controller further identifies an unknown gesture from the video data; andthe user interface communicates a designation of the unknown gesture as the control gesture. 6. The vehicle of claim 5, wherein the designation of the unknown gesture as the control gesture further specifies that the control gesture is one of a door open gesture and a door close gesture. 7. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein interpreting the control gesture includes comparing the video data with stored information relating to at least one video characteristic of the control gesture. 8. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein the controller identifies the first gesture from a movement of a tracked body part of the user over a predetermined distance. 9. A method for controlling opening and closing of a vehicle door, comprising: receiving a signal from a sensor;identifying a recognized user from a first set of data within the signal;upon identifying a first gesture by a user from within the signal: comparing the first gesture to stored data relating to a door movement command, the stored data including a first movement path and first and second tolerance ranges from the first movement path;interpreting the first gesture as the door movement command, if the gesture is within the first tolerance range from the first movement path; andcausing a power assist device to move the door in a manner corresponding with the door movement command; andupon identifying a first unknown gesture by the recognized user: receiving a command to designate the first unknown gesture as the door movement command;deriving a first movement path based on the first unknown gesture;storing the first movement path in memory in association with the door movement command; andadjusting the first movement path based on the first gesture being within a repeated deviation from the first movement path. 10. The method of claim 9, wherein: interpreting the first gesture includes interpreting the first gesture as one of a door open command and a door close command; andcausing a power assist device to move the door includes causing the power assist device to move the door to an open position with respect to an opening in response to the door open command and to a closed position with respect to the opening in response to the door close command. 11. The method of claim 9, further including: associating the first movement path with a first tracked body part;identifying a second unknown gesture by the recognized user;associating the second unknown gesture with a second tracked body part;determining a similarity between the second unknown gesture and the first movement path within a predetermined range;deriving a second movement path based on the second unknown gesture; andstoring the second movement path in memory in association with the door movement command. 12. The method of claim 9, further including: receiving information related to at least one identifying characteristic;associating the at least one identifying characteristic with the first recognized user; andstoring the at least one identifying characteristic associated with the first recognized user in memory. 13. A vehicle, comprising: a door rotatably coupled with a door opening;a power assist device coupled between the door and the door opening;a sensor; anda controller: receiving a signal from the sensor;identifying a recognized user from a first set of data within the signal;identifying a first gesture by the recognized user from a second set of data within the signal;interpreting the first gesture as one of a door open command and a door close command by comparison of a movement of a tracked body part of a user to stored data relating respectively to the door open command and the door close command, wherein the stored data includes a first movement path, a first tolerance range from the first movement path, and a second tolerance range from the first movement path that is larger than the first tolerance range and the comparison of the movement of the tracked body part to the stored data includes determining if the movement is within the first tolerance range from the first movement path;storing data including a second movement path in response to the movement being outside of the first tolerance range and within the second tolerance range on a first side of the first movement path over a predetermined number of occurrences; andcausing the power assist device to move the door to one of an open condition with respect to the opening in response to the door open command and a closed condition with respect to the door in response to the door close command. 14. The vehicle of claim 13, wherein the sensor is one of a camera, an optical sensor, a capacitive sensor, a resistive sensor, an infrared sensor, a surface acoustic wave sensor, and a proximity sensor. 15. The vehicle of claim 13, further including a user-interface: receiving information related to at least one identifying characteristic;associating the at least one identifying characteristic with the first recognized user; andcommunicating the at least one identifying characteristic associated with the first recognized user to the controller. 16. The vehicle of claim 15, wherein the information related to the at least one identifying characteristic is received from the controller and includes at least a portion of the image data from the signal received from the sensor. 17. The vehicle of claim 13, further including a user interface, wherein: the controller further identifies an unknown gesture by the recognized user from the video data; andthe user interface communicates a designation of the unknown gesture as the control gesture. 18. The vehicle of claim 17, wherein the designation of the unknown gesture as the control gesture further specifies that the control gesture is one of a door open gesture and a door close gesture. 19. The vehicle of claim 13, wherein interpreting the control gesture includes comparing the video data with stored information relating to at least one video characteristic of the control gesture.
