A pneumatically operated gas valve includes a piston positioned in a cylinder with one closed end so that the piston may seat against a gas outlet to close the gas valve. A control reservoir may be formed in the cylinder between the piston and the closed end of the cylinder. Means for filling the control reservoir with gas to a control pressure may be provided so that the control pressure acting against the piston may close the gas valve. A release valve may be opened to allow the gas in the control reservoir to escape through an exhaust port to open the gas valve.

A method of quickly releasing pressurized gas from a primary gas reservoir through a primary outlet, the method comprising: filling the primary gas reservoir with the pressurized gas, the primary gas reservoir encompassing a cylinder;providing a piston within the cylinder, a first end of the piston having an edge configured to be seated against the primary outlet in a closed valve position to hold the pressurized gas within the primary gas reservoir, a second end of the piston being positioned within the cylinder in the closed valve position and configured to slide further into the cylinder as the piston pulls away from the primary outlet towards an open valve position;providing a cushion within the control reservoir configured to make contact with the second end of the piston after the piston pulls away from the primary outlet towards the open valve position;allowing a portion of the pressurized gas to leak between the piston and an inner wall of the cylinder into a control reservoir formed by the inner wall of the cylinder and the second end of the piston to aid in keeping the piston in the closed valve position;providing a conduit with a controllable valve from the control reservoir to outside the primary gas reservoir; andopening the controllable valve to release at least some gas from the control reservoir to outside the primary gas reservoir resulting in the piston pulling away from the primary outlet towards the open valve position to rapidly open the valve;wherein in response to opening the controllable valve, the piston reaches the open valve position in 50 ms or less as measured from when the first end of the piston pulls away from the primary outlet; andwherein a cross-sectional area of the piston is no greater than 150% of a cross-sectional area of the primary outlet just outside the primary gas reservoir. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein a cross-sectional area of the piston is no greater than 120% of a cross-sectional area of the primary outlet just outside the primary gas reservoir. 3. A gas valve comprising: a primary gas reservoir configured to contain pressurized gas;a cylinder disposed with the primary gas reservoir, the cylinder being aligned with the primary outlet of the primary gas reservoir;a piston configured to slide back and forth within the cylinder, a first end of the piston having an edge configured to be seated against the primary outlet in a closed valve position to hold the pressurized gas within the primary gas reservoir, a second end of the piston being positioned within the cylinder in the closed valve position and configured to slide further into the cylinder as the piston pulls away from the primary outlet towards an open valve position;a cushion disposed within the control reservoir and configured to make contact with the second end of the piston after the piston pulls away from the primary outlet towards the open valve position;a control reservoir formed by an inner wall of the cylinder and the second end of the piston, wherein the piston and the cylinder are configured to allow a portion of the pressurized gas to leak between the piston and the inner wall of the cylinder into the control reservoir;a controllable valve configured to be selectively opened to release air from the control reservoir to outside the primary gas reservoir;wherein opening the controllable valve releases at least some gas from the control reservoir to outside the primary gas reservoir resulting in the piston pulling away from the primary outlet towards the open valve position to rapidly open the valve;wherein in response to opening the controllable valve, the piston reaches the open valve position in 50 ms or less as measured from when the first end of the piston pulls away from the primary outlet; andwherein a cross-sectional area of the piston is no greater than 150% of a cross-sectional area of the primary outlet just outside the primary gas reservoir. 4. The gas valve of claim 3, wherein a cross-sectional area of the piston is no greater than 120% of a cross-sectional area of the primary outlet just outside the primary gas reservoir. 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising: providing an output conduit aligned with the cylinder and the primary outlet. 6. The gas valve of claim 3, further comprising: an output conduit aligned with the cylinder and the primary outlet. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein said portion of the pressurized gas leaks between the piston and the inner wall of the cylinder into the control reservoir as the primary gas reservoir is being filled with the pressurized gas. 8. The gas valve of claim 3, wherein said portion of the pressurized gas leaks between the piston and the inner wall of the cylinder into the control reservoir as the primary gas reservoir is being filled with the pressurized gas. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the cylinder is aligned with the primary outlet; and wherein the edge configured to be seated against the primary outlet is a chamfered edge. 10. The method of claim 1, further comprising: providing a spring positioned between a back wall of the control reservoir and the second end of the piston to aid in pushing the piston towards the closed valve position. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the cushion is an o-ring positioned towards the back wall of the control reservoir. 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the piston makes contact with the o-ring upon being in the open valve position. 13. The method of claim 1, wherein the controllable valve may be operated to release gas from the control reservoir to the primary outlet outside the primary gas reservoir. 14. The method of claim 1, wherein the pressurized gas is air. 15. The gas valve of claim 3, wherein the cylinder is aligned with the primary outlet; and wherein the edge configured to be seated against the primary outlet is a chamfered edge. 16. The gas valve of claim 3, further comprising: a spring positioned between a back wall of the control reservoir and the second end of the piston to aid in pushing the piston towards the closed valve position. 17. The gas valve of claim 16, wherein the cushion is an o-ring positioned towards the back wall of the control reservoir. 18. The gas valve of claim 17, wherein the piston makes contact with the o-ring upon being in the open valve position. 19. The gas valve of claim 3, wherein the controllable valve may be operated to release gas from the control reservoir to the primary outlet outside the primary gas reservoir. 20. The gas valve of claim 3, wherein the pressurized gas is air.
