The extruded tube includes open ends and internal rails which serve as a guide for slidably assembling an operational assembly through the open ends of the extruded tube, a reference surface for positioning the operational assembly relative to an access opening in the seamless enclosure, and a support structure for supporting the operational assembly during use. The handheld music player includes an elongated extruded tube extending along a longitudinal axis. The elongated extruded tube has a first open end and a second open end opposite the first open end, and defines an internal lumen which is sized and dimensioned for slidable receipt of operational components of the handheld music player. The lumen includes rails for guiding the operational components to their desired position within the lumen.

The portable electronic device as recited in claim 5, wherein the portable communication device comprises a cellular telephone. 7. The portable electronic device as recited in claim 5, wherein the portable communication device is a portable media player. 8. The portable electronic device as recited in claim 3, wherein a width of the battery is more than half a width of the portable electronic device. 9. The portable electronic device as recited in claim 3, wherein a width of the first electronic subassembly is more than half a width of the portable electronic device. 10. The portable electronic device as recited in claim 3, wherein the circuit elements comprise an audio subassembly. 11. The portable electronic device as recited in claim 3, wherein the printed circuit board and the user interface element are operatively coupled by way of a flexible connector. 12. The portable electronic device as recited in claim 3, wherein the housing is seamless. 13. The portable electronic device as recited in claim 3, wherein the external lateral sides define the front opening. 14. The portable electronic device as recited in claim 13, wherein the user interface substantially fills the front opening. 15. The portable electronic device as recited in claim 3, wherein at least one of the external lateral sides comprises an opening. 16. The portable electronic device as recited in claim 15, wherein the opening is configured to receive a connector. 17. A portable electronic device comprising: a housing having a front opening, the housing defining an interior volume, wherein the housing encloses:a first electronic subassembly comprising circuit elements that include a printed circuit board, a processor and a transceiver;a second electronic subassembly comprising a user interface element, the second electronic subassembly operatively coupled to the first electronic subassembly;a battery operatively coupled to the first electronic subassembly; anda display screen positioned on a side of the printed circuit board and operatively coupled to the printed circuit board;wherein the first electronic subassembly, second electronic subassembly, and battery are positioned within the interior volume such that the display screen is viewable through the front opening of the housing. 18. The portable electronic device of claim 17, wherein the display screen is mounted on the side of the printed circuit board. 19. A portable electronic device comprising: a single piece housing having a front opening, the single piece housing defining an interior volume;a first electronic subassembly comprising a printed circuit board carrying a processor;a second electronic subassembly comprising a carrier that carries a user interface element including a touch display screen, the second electronic subassembly operatively coupled to the first electronic subassembly; anda battery positioned proximate to the first electronic subassembly,wherein the second electronic subassembly is positioned relative to the first electronic subassembly such that, when the first and second subassemblies are assembled in the housing, the first subassembly, second subassembly and battery are within the interior volume of the single piece housing and the touch display screen is accessible through the front opening. 20. The portable electronic device of claim 19, wherein the touch display screen is free floating relative to the printed circuit board.
