A method, comprising: wirelessly receiving a data packet from a data processing unit when the data processing unit is positioned within a close proximity transmission range of a sensor unit, wherein the received data packet includes an activation command;validating the received data packet; andexecuting one or more routines associated with the received activation command,wherein the executed one or more routines activate electronics of the sensor unit and control the communication or processing of analyte related data. 2. The method of claim 1, including executing the one or more routines when the received data packet is validated. 3. The method of claim 1, wherein validating the received data packet includes comparing a communication identifier in the data packet with a stored value. 4. The method of claim 1, wherein validating the received data packet includes performing error detection on the data packet. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein performing error detection on the data packet includes comparing one or more data patterns in the received data packet. 6. The method of claim 4, wherein performing error detection on the data packet includes performing error detection based on one or more error detection bits. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the received data packet includes the one or more error detection bits. 8. The method of claim 6, wherein the one or more error detection bits includes a predetermined bit pattern. 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more routines include a power on routine, a data transfer initiation routine, or a data transfer disable routine. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the close proximity transmission range is a distance of one foot or less. 11. An apparatus, comprising: a wireless communication interface adapted to receive a data packet from a data processing unit when the data processing unit is positioned within a close proximity transmission range;one or more processing units coupled to the wireless communication interface; anda memory for storing instructions which, when executed by the one or more processing units, causes the one or more processing units to: validate the received data packet, wherein the received data packet includes an activation command; andexecute one or more routines associated with the received activation command to control the communication or processing of analyte related data. 12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the one or more processing units process a communication identifier received from the data processing unit. 13. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the one or more routines include a power on routine, a data transfer initiation routine, or a data transfer disable routine. 14. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the one or more processing units include an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). 15. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the close proximity transmission range is a distance of one foot or less. 16. An apparatus, comprising: a wireless communication interface adapted to transmit data within a close proximity transmission range;one or more processing units coupled to the wireless communication interface; anda memory for storing instructions which, when executed by the one or more processing units, causes the one or more processing units to: cause transmission of a data packet including an activation command to a sensor unit positioned within the close proximity transmission range, wherein receipt of the data packet activates sensor electronics and causes one or more routines to execute, wherein the one or more routines control the communication or processing of analyte related data. 17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the one or more processing units processes a communication identifier including identification information received from the sensor unit. 18. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the one or more routines include a power on routine, a data transfer initiation routine, or a data transfer disable routine. 19. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the one or more processing units include an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). 20. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the wireless communication interface is configured to wirelessly communicate data over a close proximity radio frequency communication link. 21. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the close proximity transmission range is a distance of one foot or less.
