The method of claim 1, further comprising removing, while the totes are stacked, at least one of the items from at least one of the totes through at least one lateral opening. 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising transporting at least a portion of the totes from a first location to a second location while at least some of the items are in the totes. 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising transporting at least a portion of the totes from the first location to the second location while at least some of the items are in the totes and while the totes are stacked and cross coupled to one another. 5. The method of claim 4, wherein transporting at least a portion of the totes from the first location to the second location while the totes are stacked and cross coupled comprises moving at least a portion of the stacked and cross-coupled totes on a pallet. 6. The method of claim 1, wherein placing the one or more items in each of two or more totes comprises: providing one or more empty totes to an item supplier; andreceiving one or more items in at least one of the totes from the supplier. 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the stacking the one or more totes on the at least one of the base tier totes expands inventory storage for the material handling facility in response to a requirement for temporarily creating or expanding inventory storage for a material handling facility. 8. The method of claim 1, wherein laterally cross coupling the at least two totes with one another forms a base tier of totes which comprises an array at least two totes wide by at least two totes deep. 9. The method of claim 8, wherein at least four of the totes comprised in the base tier are cross coupled to one another at a common junction. 10. The method of claim 1, wherein laterally cross coupling the at least two totes with one another comprises laterally cross coupling the at least two totes side-to-side. 11. The method of claim 1, wherein laterally cross coupling the at least two totes with one another comprises laterally cross coupling the at least two totes front-to-back. 12. The method of claim 1, wherein: each tote of the at least two totes comprises a coupling portion, andlaterally cross coupling the at least two totes with one another comprises laterally cross coupling the coupling portion of a first tote of the at least two totes with the coupling portion of at least one other tote of the at least two totes. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the coupling portions comprise interlocking elements. 14. A method of making a shelving system for storing items, comprising: cross coupling two or more totes to form a base tier of totes, wherein each of the totes comprises one or more lateral openings, wherein the cross coupling comprises: coupling separate dividers, wherein each divider comprises a front wall and a rear wall, with separate lateral openings of separate adjacent lateral faces of the two or more totes which are cross coupled to each other based at least in part upon, for each separate divider: a downward sliding engagement between at least one vertical rail extending along a side of the respective divider and at least one slot extending along a side of the respective separate lateral opening to bottom out the at least one vertical rail on a bottom of the respective lateral opening, anda downward sliding engagement between at least one post at a top side edge of the respective divider above at least one vertical rail extending along the respective side, wherein the at least one post projects towards the rear wall of the respective divider, and a socket in a top of the respective lateral face proximate to the respective lateral opening, wherein the socket is positioned towards an interior of the respective tote, such that the respective divider is restricted to coupling with the respective lateral opening in an orientation where the rear wall faces towards the interior of the respective tote when the at least one post lies flush with a top surface of the socket;wherein coupling the separate dividers with separate lateral openings of the lateral faces of the at least two totes results in: each separate divider lying flush with top and side portions of the respective lateral face including the respective lateral opening to which the respective divider is coupled, the separate dividers lying in flush lateral contact with each other, at respective limited top portions of the separate dividers, andthe separate dividers partitioning bottom bases in the two or more cross-coupled totes from each other to restrict removal of items from a given bottom base of a given tote of the two or more cross-coupled totes from a lateral opening of another cross-coupled tote of the two or more cross-coupled totes, such that: lateral removal of items from the given bottom base of the given one of the cross-coupled totes is restricted to a lateral opening of the given tote which is not cross-coupled with the other cross-coupled tote, andlateral removal of items from the given bottom base of the given one of the cross-coupled totes via a bottom base of the other cross-coupled tote is precluded; andstacking one or more totes on at least one of the totes in the base tier to form at least one higher tier of totes, wherein the one or more totes are stacked such that items can be placed into the at least one of the totes through at least one of the lateral openings. 15.
