An electrically heated aerosol generating system for receiving an aerosol-forming substrate includes at least one heating element for heating the substrate to form the aerosol and a power supply for supplying power to the at least one heating element. The power supply includes a voltage source, two or more supercapacitors, and switches between the voltage source and the two or more supercapacitors. The switches are arranged so that, during a charging mode, the supercapacitors are connected so as to be charged by the voltage source and, during a heating mode, the supercapacitors are connected so as to discharge through the at least one heating element.

An electrically heated aerosol generating system for receiving an aerosol-forming substrate, the system comprising: at least one heating element for heating the substrate to form an aerosol; anda power supply for supplying power to the at least one heating element, the power supply including,a voltage source,at least two supercapacitors,switches between the voltage source and the at least two supercapacitors, the switches being arranged such that, during a charging mode, the supercapacitors are connected for charging by the voltage source and, during a heating mode, the supercapacitors are connected for discharging through the at least one heating element, the at least two supercapacitors being connected in series independent of an operation of the switches, andvoltage step-up or step-down circuitry between the voltage source and the at least two supercapacitors. 2. The electrically heated aerosol generating system according to claim 1, wherein the system further comprises: a hand held portion,and an external charging portion,the hand held portion including the at least one heating element, the at least two supercapacitors and at least some of the switches,the external charging portion comprising the voltage source and the remaining switches. 3. The electrically heated aerosol generating system according to claim 1, further comprising: a solid aerosol-forming substrate. 4. The electrically heated aerosol generating system according to claim 1, further comprising: a liquid aerosol-forming substrate. 5. The electrically heated aerosol generating system according to claim 1, further comprising: a sensor to detect air flow in response to a user taking a puff. 6. The electrically heated aerosol generating system according to claim 1, wherein at least one of the switches is a solid state switch. 7. The electrically heated aerosol generating system according to claim 2, wherein the external charging portion includes a controller that is configured to change a position of a portion of the switches during the heating and charging modes. 8. The electrically heated aerosol generating system according to claim 2, wherein a controller is configured to close portion of the switches when, during the charging mode, the hand held portion is connected to the external charging portion. 9. The electrically heated aerosol generating system according to claim 2, wherein a controller is configured to open a portion of the switches when, during the heating mode, the hand held portion is disconnected from the external charging portion. 10. The electrically heated aerosol generating system according to claim 1, wherein the switches include, a first switch operationally connected between the voltage step-up or step-down circuitry and the at least two supercapacitors, anda second switch operationally connected between the at least two supercapacitors and the at least one heating element.
