The microscope slide scanning system of claim 1, further comprising a communication port, wherein the at least one processor executes a web server that is configured to provide the graphical user interface to an external device via the communication port. 3. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 2, wherein the web server is configured to provide the graphical user interface, over at least one network, to a network browser executing on the external device. 4. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 1, further comprising a piezo positioner configured to move the objective lens along an axis that is orthogonal to a plane of the stage to provide fine focus adjustment. 5. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 4, wherein the stage is configured to move along the axis that is orthogonal to the plane of the stage to provide coarse focus adjustment. 6. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 1, wherein the graphical user interface comprises a real-time image of a portion of the loaded microscope slide created by the line scan camera. 7. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 1, wherein updating the dynamic image in the graphical user interface comprises displaying images of each portion of the loaded microscope slide created by the line scan camera, one at a time. 8. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 7, wherein the graphical user interface displays the images, one at a time, in an order that the images were created, at a speed controlled by an operator. 9. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 1, wherein the graphical user interface displays at least a portion of the contiguous digital image according to a zoom level. 10. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 9, wherein the at least one processor tracks each portion of the contiguous digital image that is viewed within the graphical user interface. 11. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 10, wherein the at least one processor measures a dwell time for each tracked portion of the contiguous digital image. 12. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 9, wherein the graphical user interface displays the at least a portion of the contiguous digital image according to the zoom level, in addition to a macro image that comprises the entire contiguous digital image and an indication on the macro image of an area of the macro image corresponding to the at least a portion of the contiguous digital image. 13. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 12, wherein the at least one processor is configured to update the at least a portion of the contiguous digital image in response to a user interaction with the macro image or the indication on the macro image. 14. A microscope slide scanning system comprising a loader configured to automatically load a microscope slide from a cassette comprising a plurality of microscope slides;a display monitor;a stage configured to support the loaded microscope slide;an objective lens configured to view a portion of the loaded microscope slide;a line scan camera optically coupled with the objective lens, the line scan camera configured to create a plurality of digital image strips, each of the plurality of digital image strips comprising a portion of the loaded microscope slide;focusing optics, wherein the focusing optics comprise a tube lens having a length equal to a focal length of the objective lens multiplied by a magnification value, and wherein the magnification value is equal to a length of a smallest resolvable spatial feature divided by a smallest resolvable feature dimension of the objective lens;at least one processor configured to align the plurality of digital image strips into a contiguous digital image, andupdate a dynamic image in a graphical user interface on the display monitor to simulate scanning of the loaded microscope slide; anda data storage area configured to store the contiguous digital image. 15. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 14, wherein the length of the smallest resolvable spatial feature is equal to a length of two pixels produced by the line scan camera. 16. A microscope slide scanning system comprising: a loader configured to automatically load a microscope slide from a cassette comprising a plurality of microscope slides;a display monitor;a stage configured to support the loaded microscope slide;an objective lens configured to view a portion of the loaded microscope slide;a line scan camera optically coupled with the objective lens, the line scan camera configured to create a plurality of digital image strips, each of the plurality of digital image strips comprising a portion of the loaded microscope slide;at least one processor configured to align the plurality of digital image strips into a contiguous digital image, andupdate a dynamic image in a graphical user interface on the display monitor to simulate scanning of the loaded microscope slide; anda data storage area configured to store the contiguous digital image,wherein the stage is configured to move the loaded microscope slide in a first direction when capturing a first one of the plurality of digital image strips via the line scan camera, and move the loaded microscope slide in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction when capturing a second one of the plurality of digital image strips, that is adjacent to the first digital image strip, via the line scan camera. 17. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 16, wherein the stage is configured to, between capturing the first and second digital image strips, while a field of view of the line scan camera does not include any portion of the loaded microscope slide, decelerate in the first direction and accelerate in the second direction according to an S-curve profile. 18. A microscope slide scanning system comprising: a loader configured to automatically load a microscope slide from a cassette comprising a plurality of microscope slides;a display monitor;a stage configured to support the loaded microscope slide;an objective lens configured to view a portion of the loaded microscope slide;a line scan camera optically coupled with the objective lens, the line scan camera configured to create a plurality of digital image strips, each of the plurality of digital image strips comprising a portion of the loaded microscope slide;at least one processor configured to align the plurality of digital image strips into a contiguous digital image,apply at least one morphological algorithm to the contiguous digital image to identify and locate specific types of objects within the contiguous digital image,update a dynamic image in a graphical user interface on the display monitor to simulate scanning of the loaded microscope slide, wherein the graphical user interface displays at least a portion of the contiguous digital image according to a zoom level, and wherein the graphical user interface comprises a thumbnail image of each of one or more of the identified objects, and,in response to selection of a thumbnail image of an identified object within the graphical user interface, update the at least a portion of the contiguous digital image to comprise a portion of the contiguous digital image that includes the identified object in the selected thumbnail image; anda data storage area configured to store the contiguous digital image. 19. The microscope slide scanning system of claim 18, wherein the graphical user interface comprises a count of each identified type of object.
