A method performed by a controller for controlling at least a first display and a second display of a motor vehicle, the method comprising: receiving a first input from a user interface, the first input comprising a command to change at least one of a display setting or information being displayed, the user interface having a user input device that includes at least one of a touch pad or touch screen;determining, before the first input, which display of the first display and the second display is selected to be controlled by the user interface;controlling, with the first input, the information on the display that was selected from among the first display and the second display; andgenerating, at at least one of the touch pad or touch screen of the user interface, a haptic effect via a haptic output device in signal communication with the controller, wherein the haptic effect is based on which display of the first display and the second display was selected to be controlled by the user interface. 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the haptic effect is a second haptic effect, the method further comprising: generating a first haptic effect to confirm receipt of the first input; and changing the first haptic effect based on which of the first display and the second display was selected to be controlled. 3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the first haptic effect is a vibrotactile effect and the second haptic effect is a friction effect. 4. A system for a motor vehicle comprising: a first display;a second display;a controller in signal communication with the first display and the second display, the controller being configured to control an output of the first display and an output of the second display;a user input device in signal communication with the controller, the user input device configured to receive a first input that comprises a command to change at least one of a display setting or a display output;a display control selector in signal communication with the controller and configured to output a determination, before the first input, of which display of the first display and the second display is being controlled by the user input device; anda haptic output device in signal communication with the controller, the haptic output device being configured to receive a haptic output signal generated by the controller and to output a first haptic effect to confirm receipt of the first input, and being configured to change the first haptic effect based on the determination of which of the first display and the second display is being controlled by the user input device. 5. The system of claim 4, wherein the first display comprises a display screen that is located on one of a dashboard and a center stack of the motor vehicle. 6. The system of claim 5, wherein the second display comprises a display screen that is located on the other of the dashboard and the center stack of the motor vehicle. 7. The system of claim 5, wherein the second display is a heads-up display that is configured to project images onto a windshield of the motor vehicle. 8. The system of claim 4, wherein the user input device comprises a touch input device. 9. The system of claim 8, wherein the haptic output device comprises an electrostatic device, and wherein the first haptic effect comprises a friction effect felt on the touch input device. 10. The system of claim 9, wherein the touch input device comprises one of a touch pad and a touch screen. 11. The system of claim 4, wherein the user input device comprises at least one of a joystick and a rotary knob. 12. The system of claim 4, wherein the haptic output device comprises an actuator, and wherein the first haptic effect comprises vibrotactile feedback. 13. The system of claim 12, wherein the actuator is selected from the group consisting of a piezoelectric actuator, a voice coil, a magnetic actuator, a pneumatic actuator, an ultrasonic energy actuator, an eccentric mass actuator, an electroactive polymer actuator, and a shape memory alloy. 14. The system of claim 12, wherein the vibrotactile feedback is provided to a steering wheel of the motor vehicle. 15. The system of claim 12, wherein the vibrotactile feedback is provided to a driver's seat of the motor vehicle. 16. The system of claim 12, wherein the vibrotactile feedback is provided to the user input device. 17. The system of claim 4, wherein the user input device is located on one of a steering wheel, a dash board, a center stack, a driver's door and a driver's seat of the motor vehicle. 18. The system of claim 4, wherein the display control selector is selected from the group consisting of a mechanical button, rotary dial, and slider switch.
