The gaming system generates one or more symbols (and/or one or more awards) at one or more of the symbol display positions of a matrix or grid. The gaming system then randomly forms a path including a plurality of the symbol display positions and determines an award for the player based on which symbol display positions are included in the formed path.

A gaming system comprising: a processor; anda memory device which stores a plurality of instructions which, when executed by the processor for a play of a wagering game associated with a predetermined award selected from a pool of different predetermined awards, cause the processor to: communicate data which results in a display device displaying a plurality of adjacent symbol display positions,for each of the plurality of adjacent symbol display positions, communicate data which results in the display device displaying a symbol selected from a plurality of different symbols,select a quantity of at least two of the adjacent symbol display positions,after selecting the quantity of at least two of the adjacent symbol display positions, communicate data which results in the display device displaying a path formed by said selected quantity of at least two of the adjacent symbol display positions,communicate data which results in the display device displaying an accumulation of each of the symbols displayed at each of the selected symbol display positions of the formed path, andcommunicate data which results in the display device displaying the predetermined award selected from the pool of predetermined awards, said displayed predetermined award being equal to any awards associated with the accumulated symbols. 2. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein the formed path of symbol display positions comprises a starting symbol display position and an ending symbol display position. 3. The gaming system of claim 2, wherein when executed by the processor, the plurality of instructions cause the processor to communicate data which results in the display device displaying a collector moving from the starting symbol display position through each of the selected quantity of adjacent symbol display positions of the formed path to the ending symbol display position. 4. The gaming system of claim 2, wherein when executed by the processor, the plurality of instructions cause the processor to communicate data which results in the display device displaying at least two collectors moving along the symbol display positions of the path in different directions. 5. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein said selection of the quantity of at least two of the adjacent symbol display positions occurs prior to any display of any path formed by said at least two adjacent symbol display positions for the play of the wagering game. 6. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein the predetermined award is prevented from being subsequently selected from the pool of different predetermined awards. 7. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein the memory device stores the pool of different predetermined awards. 8. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein when executed by the processor, the plurality of instructions cause the processor to receive the predetermined award from a central controller. 9. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein the predetermined award comprises: an amount of monetary credits, an amount of non-monetary credits, an amount of promotional credits and an amount of player tracking points. 10. A method of operating a gaming system, said method comprising: causing a display, by a display device, of a plurality of adjacent symbol display positions for a play of a wagering game associated with a predetermined award selected from a pool of different predetermined awards,for each of the plurality of adjacent symbol display positions, causing a display, by the display device, of a symbol selected from a plurality of different symbols,selecting, by a processor, a quantity of at least two of the adjacent symbol display positions,after selecting the quantity of at least two of the adjacent symbol display positions, causing a display, by the display device, of a path formed by said selected quantity of at least two of the adjacent symbol display positions,causing a display, by the display device, of an accumulation of each of the symbols displayed at each of the selected symbol display positions of the formed path, andcausing a display, by the display device, of the predetermined award selected from a the pool of predetermined awards, said displayed predetermined award being equal to any awards associated with the accumulated symbols. 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the formed path of symbol display positions comprises a starting symbol display position and an ending symbol display position. 12. The method of claim 11, further comprising causing a display, by the display device, of a collector moving from the starting symbol display position through each of the selected quantity of adjacent symbol display positions of the formed path to the ending symbol display position. 13. The method of claim 11, further comprising causing a display, by the display device, of at least two collectors moving along the symbol display positions of the path in different directions. 14. The method of claim 10, wherein said selection of the quantity of at least two of the adjacent symbol display positions occurs prior to any display of any path formed by said at least two adjacent symbol display positions for the play of the wagering game. 15. The method of claim 10, wherein the predetermined award is prevented from being subsequently selected from the pool of different predetermined awards. 16. The method of claim 10, further comprising storing the pool of different predetermined awards. 17. The method of claim 10, further comprising receiving the predetermined award from a central controller. 18. The method of claim 10, wherein the predetermined award comprises: an amount of monetary credits, an amount of non-monetary credits, an amount of promotional credits and an amount of player tracking points. 19. The method of claim 10, which is provided through a data network. 20. The method of claim 19, wherein the data network is an internet.
