An external fixation clamp for receiving a fixation element includes an inner jaw and an outer jaw movable between an open position that permits the fixation element to be placed between the inner and outer jaws and a closed position that restricts removal of the fixation element from between the inner and outer jaws. A latch assembly may cooperate with the inner and outer jaws to secure the jaws in a closed position. The latch assembly may comprise a latch and a latch biasing member. The latch may be configured to translate linearly relative to one of the inner and outer jaws, and the latch biasing member may have a first higher level of stored energy when the inner and outer jaws are in the open position and a second lower level of stored energy when the inner and outer jaws are in the closed position.

The clamping device of claim 1, wherein the first latch comprises first and second wall portions connected by an extending bar portion. 6. The clamping device of claim 5, wherein: in the provisionally locked position, a bearing surface of the bar portion is engaged with a stop surface on a rear portion of one of the first and second jaws to prevent the one of the first and second jaws from rotating relative to the other of the first and second jaws; andin the open position, the bearing surface of the bar portion is disengaged with the stop surface on the rear portion of the one of the first and second jaws to allow the one of the first and second jaws to rotate relative to the other of the first and second jaws. 7. The clamping device of claim 1, wherein the second clamp comprises: third and fourth jaws cooperatively arranged to capture a second fixation element therebetween, the second fixation element having a second roll axis along which the second clamp is configured to translate and about which the second clamp is configured to rotate; anda second latch moveable linearly in at least one direction parallel to the pitch axis to set the third and fourth jaws in an open position that permits the second fixation element to be placed between the third and fourth jaws and in a provisionally locked position that restricts removal of the second fixation element from between the third and fourth jaws, but allows the third and fourth jaws to slide along and rotate about the second fixation element. 8. The clamping device of claim 1, further comprising a first latch biasing member arranged and configured to bias the first latch, the first latch biasing member having a first higher level of stored energy when the first and second jaws are in the open position and a second lower level of stored energy when the first and second jaws are in the provisionally locked position. 9. The clamping device of claim 8, wherein each of the first and second jaws comprises a clamping portion and a rear portion opposite the clamping portion, and, wherein the first latch biasing member comprises at least one spring, the at least one spring being relatively uncompressed to bias the first latch to be disposed toward the clamping portions of the first and second jaws when the first and second jaws are in the provisionally locked position and being relatively compressed when the first latch is disposed toward the rear portions of the first and second jaws when the first and second jaws are in the open position. 10. The clamping device of claim 9, further comprising a jaw spring, the jaw spring being relatively compressed when the first and second jaws are in the provisionally locked position and being relatively uncompressed to bias the clamping portion of one of the first and second jaws away from the clamping portion of the other of the first and second jaws when the first and second jaws are in the open position. 11. 12. The clamping device of claim 1, wherein the tightening component comprises a threaded nut threadably engaging threads at the second end of the post. 13. A clamping device for clamping fixation elements of an external fixation system, the clamping device comprising: a post having a spherical head at a first end and threads at a second end;first and second clamps secured to and configured to rotate about the post;a saddle assembly secured to the post and disposed between the first and second clamps, each of the first and second clamps being rotatable relative to the saddle assembly; anda tightening component threadably engaging the second end of the post, the first clamp comprising:first and second jaws cooperatively arranged to capture a fixation element therebetween; anda first latch moveable linearly to set the first and second jaws in an open position that permits the fixation element to be placed between the first and second jaws and in a provisionally locked position that restricts removal of the fixation element from between the first and second jaws, but allows the first and second jaws to slide along and rotate about the fixation element, andthe tightening component being configured in a manner that an action of tightening the tightening component simultaneously locks a position and an orientation of the first and second clamps on the post and prevents removal of the fixation element from between the first and second jaws of the first clamp, and prevents the first and second jaws from sliding along or rotating about the fixation element. 14.
