Devices, bandages, kits and methods are described that can control or regulate the mechanical environment of a wound to ameliorate scar and/or keloid formation. The mechanical environment of a wound includes stress, strain, and any combination of stress and strain. The control of a wound's mechanical environment can be active, passive, dynamic, or static. The devices are configured to be removably secured to a skin surface in proximity to the wound site and shield the wound from endogenous and/or exogenous stress.

1. A bandage to ameliorate the formation of a scar or keloid at a wound site, wherein the bandage comprises: at least first, second and third configurations, and is configured to be removably secured to a skin surface while in the second configuration and is capable of being activated while in the second configuration to adopt the third configuration, wherein the second configuration is strained relative to the first configuration and is thermally activated to adopt the third configuration. 2. The bandage of claim 1, further comprising a mechanism for altering the temperature at the skin surface. 3. The bandage of claim 2, wherein the mechanism is electrical. 4. The bandage of claim 2, wherein the mechanism is chemical. 5. The bandage of claim 2, wherein the mechanism is mechanical. 6. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the bandage comprises a polymer. 7. The bandage of claim 6, wherein the bandage comprises a silicone polymer or a shape memory polymer. 8. The bandage of claim 7, wherein the bandage comprises a shape memory polymer selected from the group consisting of acrylate-based shape memory polymers, styrene-based shape memory polymers, and epoxy-based shape memory polymers. 9. The bandage of claim 1, further comprising a mechanism to induce a color change in at least a portion of the bandage. 10. The bandage of claim 9, wherein the color change corresponds to a change in bandage stiffness. 11. The bandage of claim 9, wherein the color change corresponds to a change in bandage efficacy. 12. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the third configuration differs from the second configuration in at least one direction. 13. The bandage of claim 12, wherein the third configuration differs from the first configuration by less than about 10% in at least one direction. 14. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the third configuration differs from the second configuration in at least two directions. 15. The bandage of claim 14, wherein the third configuration differs from the first configuration by less than about 10% in at least two directions. 16. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the third configuration is at least partially determined by constraint placed on the bandage. 17. The bandage of claim 16, wherein the constraint is affected by skin compliance. 18. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the second configuration is configured to be removably secured to the skin surface with an adhesive material. 19. The bandage of claim 18, wherein the adhesive material is selected from the group consisting of polyacrylate-based, polyisobutylene-based, and silicone-based pressure sensitive adhesives. 20. The bandage of claim 1, further comprising an active agent. 21. The bandage of claim 20, wherein the active agent is selected from the group consisting of a pharmaceutical compound, protein, vitamin and combinations thereof. 22. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the third configuration is substantially the same as the first configuration. 23. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the bandage has a shape selected from the group consisting of a rectangle, circle, trapezoid, toroid, oval, and segments and combinations thereof. 24. The bandage of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the bandage is made from a transparent material. 25. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the second configuration is strained by about 5% relative to the first configuration. 26. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the second configuration is strained by about 10% relative to the first configuration. 27. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the second configuration is strained by about 20% relative to the first configuration. 28. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the second configuration is strained by about 30% relative to the first configuration. 29. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the second configuration is strained by about 40% relative to the first configuration. 30. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the second configuration is strained by about 50% relative to the first configuration. 31. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the second configuration is strained by about 70% relative to the first configuration. 32. The bandage of claim 1, wherein the second configuration is strained by about 100% relative to the first configuration.
