An underlayment for supplementing one or more physical properties of wall, ceiling, and floor construction components is used to in a wall, ceiling, or floor assembly that may be fabricated on site. The assembly includes: first and second wall, ceiling, or floor construction components which each have physical properties and an underlayment component which has at least one supplemental physical property for supplementing the physical properties of the first and second construction components. The construction components may or may not be secured together with the underlayment sandwiched between the second and first construction components to form a wall, ceiling, or floor assembly with the supplemental physical property or properties of the underlayment. The supplemental physical property or properties of the underlayment may include, but are not limited to, latent storage of thermal energy, sound transmission reduction, and/or burn through resistance.

1. A method for on-site fabrication of a wall construction component/underlayment assembly, comprising: providing a first wall construction board; the first construction board having a length, a width, and a thickness; the first construction board having first and second major surfaces that are each defined by the length and the width of the first construction board;providing a second wall construction board; the second construction board having a length, a width, and a thickness; the second construction board having first and second major surfaces that are each defined by the length and the width of the second construction board;providing a plurality of underlayment strips comprising a nonwoven fiber mat and a phase change material that provides latent storage of thermal energy, wherein during use the phase change material undergoes a solid to liquid phase change between about 15° C. and about 27° C.;positioning the first major surface of the first construction board adjacent an interior side of structural support members of a wall;positioning the underlayment strips adjacent the second major surface of the first construction board on the interior side of the structural support members such that adjacent underlayment strips contact each another and securing the underlayment strips to the second major surface of the first construction board to form an underlayment layer;positioning the first major surface of the second construction board adjacent the underlayment strips on the interior side of the structural support members so that the underlayment layer is sandwiched between the first and second construction boards on the first side of the structural support members; andsecuring the second construction board to the first construction board and the underlayment strips via an adhesive or a plurality of mechanical fasteners with the underlayment layer sandwiched between the second and first construction boards to form an interior wall assembly;wherein after the second construction board is secured to the first construction board, the first construction board, the underlayment layer, and the second construction board are permanently affixed to each other, and the phase change material undergoes a solid to liquid phase change. 2. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 1, wherein: the underlayment layer formed by the underlayment strips substantially overlies the entire first major surface of the first construction board. 3. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 2, wherein: the thickness of the underlayment layer is between about 0.015 inches and about 0.375 inches. 4. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 3, wherein: the underlayment strips are flexible and a roll good. 5. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 1, wherein: the first and second construction boards are gypsum boards, cement boards, or wood fiber boards. 6. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 1, wherein: the nonwoven fiber mat is saturated with the phase change material and encapsulated within a flexible polymeric film envelope that is impermeable to the phase change material in liquid form. 7. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 1, wherein: the nonwoven fiber mat contains microcapsules of the phase change material. 8. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 1, wherein: the phase change material is encapsulated within and has an initial distribution throughout a flexible polymeric film envelope that is impermeable to the phase change material in liquid form, the polymeric film comprising means to envelope the phase change material to substantially keep the phase change material, when in liquid form, from migrating within the envelope so that the phase change material substantially retains the initial distribution within the envelope through repeated phase changes between solid and liquid form regardless of the orientation of the underlayment. 9. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 1, wherein: the underlayment strips include a sound deadening material that reduces sound transmission. 10. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 9, wherein: the underlayment strips include a burn through resistant material that provides burn through resistance. 11. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 1, wherein: the nonwoven fiber mat comprises burn through resistant fibers. 12. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 1, wherein: the mechanical fasteners that secure the second construction board to the first construction board with the underlayment layer sandwiched between the second and first construction boards to form the interior or exterior wall assembly also secures the second construction board to the structural support member. 13. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 1, wherein: securing the second construction board to the first construction board and the underlayment strips comprises a combination of the adhesive and the plurality of mechanical fasteners. 14. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 1, wherein: the nonwoven fiber mat comprises glass fibers. 15. The method for on-site fabrication of a wall assembly according to claim 9, wherein: the underlayment strips comprise between 40% and 60% by weight microcapsules of the phase change material.
