The ankle brace includes a calf body defining lateral and medial frontal sides spaced by a frontal opening, and first and second straps depending from the first and second frontal sides of the calf body, respectively. The first and second straps are arranged to extend juxtaposed across the opening and secure to the second and first frontal sides, respectively. The brace also includes opposed lateral and medial ankle struts pivotally attached to the calf body, and a footplate connected to the ankle struts. The medial ankle strut has greater rigidity than the lateral ankle strut. The calf body medial section has greater rigidity than the calf body lateral section.

1. An ankle brace, comprising: first and second calf shells defining first and second frontal sides bordering and spaced apart by a frontal opening, and first and second rear sides spaced apart from one another by a clearance, the first and second rear sides forming first and second locking tabs, respectively, extending from first and second edges opposed to one another across from the clearance separating the first and second rear sides, respectively; andan expansion coupling removably securing to and bridging the first and second rear sides, the expansion coupling having a first series of slots comprising at least two slots and a second series of slots comprising at least two slots, the first series of slots are arranged at a first oblique angle relative to a centerline of the expansion coupling and the second series of slots are arranged at a second oblique angle relative to the centerline and opposite to the first oblique angle, the first and second locking tabs arranged to engage and secure with one of the at least two slots of each of the first and second series of slots, respectively;wherein the first and second locking tabs each define a ledge portion having a first segment extending inwardly of the ankle brace from the first and second rear sides of the respective calf shells and a second segment extending laterally from the first segment toward the clearance such that the first and second locking tabs generally face one another at their ends, each ledge portion adapted to extend through a corresponding one of the slots and extend along a rear surface of the expansion coupling. 2. The ankle brace of claim 1, wherein the expansion coupling is bendable to align the slots with the first and second locking tabs. 3. The ankle brace of claim 1, further comprising a first liner formed from a compressible material and defining a calf shell portion corresponding in shape to the first calf shell and an elongate coupling portion bridging the clearance between the first and second rear sides of the first and second calf shells, the expansion coupling adapted to extend over the coupling portion of the first liner. 4. The ankle brace of claim 3, further comprising a second liner formed from a compressible material and defining a calf shell portion corresponding in shape to the second calf shell and a coupling portion, the coupling portion of the second liner having a shorter length than the elongate portion of the first liner. 5. The ankle brace of claim 1, wherein the expansion coupling has a generally trapezoidal shape, the expansion coupling divided in half along the centerline. 6. The ankle brace of claim 1, wherein the expansion coupling includes a plurality of indicia corresponding to the at least two slots of the first and second series of slots to indicate settings for the expansion coupling. 7. An ankle brace, comprising: first and second calf shells defining first and second frontal sides bordering and spaced apart by a frontal opening, and first and second rear sides spaced apart from one another by a clearance, the first and second rear sides forming first and second locking tabs, respectively, extending from first and second edges opposed to one another across from the clearance separating the first and second rear sides, respectively; andan expansion coupling removably securing to and bridging the first and second rear sides, the expansion coupling having a first series of slots comprising at least two slots and a second series of slots comprising at least two slots, the first series of slots are arranged at a first oblique angle relative to a centerline of the expansion coupling and the second series of slots are arranged at a second oblique angle relative to the centerline and opposite to the first oblique angle, the first and second locking tabs arranged to engage and secure with one of the at least two slots of each of the first and second series of slots, respectively;a first liner formed from a compressible material and defining a calf shell portion corresponding in shape to the first calf shell and an elongate coupling portion bridging the clearance between the first and second rear sides of the first and second calf shells, the expansion coupling adapted to extend over the coupling portion of the first liner;wherein the first and second locking tabs each define a ledge portion having a first segment extending inwardly of the ankle brace from the first and second rear sides of the respective calf shells and a second segment extending laterally from the first segment toward the clearance such that the first and second locking tabs generally face one another at their ends, each ledge portion adapted to extend through a corresponding one of the slots and extend along a rear surface of the expansion coupling.
