A process for producing pipeline-ready or refinery-ready feedstock from heavy hydrocarbons using a high-performance solvent extraction process with high local solvent-to-process fluid ratios yet maintaining low overall solvent-to-process fluid ratios, by first performing mild thermal cracking on the heavy hydrocarbons and then separating asphaltene-rich fractions from a resulting thermally affected fluid so that the high solvent-to-oil ratio portion of the process acts only on those asphaltene-rich fractions, and producing a dry, solid asphaltene as an end-product.

1. Process apparatus for processing heavy hydrocarbons to produce pipeline-ready or refinery-ready feedstock, comprising: (a) a process fluid preparation component for mixing heavy hydrocarbon with other substances as required to prepare a process fluid;(b) transport means to move the process fluid to a pre-heater;(c) the pre-heater for heating the process fluid to a temperature close to or at a desired operating temperature of a reactor;(d) transport means to move the heated process fluid to the reactor;(e) the reactor having heat exchange means to provide a desired heat flux to the process fluid and maintain the process fluid in-reactor at a substantially uniform desired temperature for a desired residence time;(f) means to provide sweep gas to the process fluid in the reactor;(g) means to remove various produced substances from the reactor at the end of the residence time, those substances comprising at least: (i) non-condensable vapours(ii) light liquid hydrocarbons(iii) thermally-affected asphaltene-rich fractions(h) means to separate non-condensable vapours from light liquid hydrocarbons;(i) transport means to move the thermally affected asphaltene-rich fractions to a solvent extraction processor;(j) the solvent extraction processor including means to supply C4-C8 solvent and to mix the solvent with the thermally affected asphaltene rich fractions, and means to keep the processor and mixture operating at temperatures between 40 and 130 Fahrenheit degrees below the critical temperature of the solvent in the process;(k) the solvent extraction processor, with means to remove extracted products from the thermally affected asphaltene-rich fractions, those products being: (i) deasphalted oils(ii) resins(iii) concentrated solid asphaltene particles which are a dry solid at operating temperatures; and(iv) solventthe dry solid asphaltene particulate having been precipitated out of the solvent/thermally-affected asphaltene process fluid/mixture; andmeans to collect the deasphalted oils, resins and the light liquid hydrocarbons in appropriate quantities and blend them together to provide the pipeline-ready or refinery-ready feedstock, where the reactor is a single thermal conversion reactor with an overhead partial condenser. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 operating with uniform heat flux introduced to process fluid in the reactor between 7,000 and 12,000 BTU/hr.sq.ft. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 operating with sweep gas of between 20-80 sdf/bbl (gas/process fluid) introduced to the process fluid within the reactor. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 where the sweep gas is at least one of: nitrogen, steam hydrogen or light hydrocarbon. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 with a heater to heat the sweep gas prior to introduction to the reactor. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 operating with residence times for process fluid in reactor between 40 and 180 minutes in duration. 7. The apparatus of claim 1 providing substantially uniform temperatures for the process fluid in the reactor between 675 and 775° F. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 with the process fluid in the reactor being at or near atmospheric pressure. 9. The apparatus of claim 1 operating at pressures below 50 psig. 10. The apparatus of claim 1 where the feed to the process apparatus has an API in the range of 0-12 with the resulting feed to the solvent extraction processor having an API of −8 to 0, and the solvent extraction processor apparatus is operated such that the produced dry solid asphaltene particulate exists as a solid at temperatures up to at least 700° F. 11. The apparatus of claim 1 with pneumatic transport means to handle the dry, solid asphaltenes. 12. An apparatus for producing a pipeline- or refinery-ready feedstock and a dry thermally-affected asphaltene solid from heavy, high asphaltene feedstock process fluid, said apparatus comprising: (a) A pre-heater to pre-heat a process fluid to a designed temperature;(b) Means to move the pre-heated process fluid to a single thermal conversion reactor with an overhead partial condenser, for optimally converting asphaltenes in the process fluid within the reactor to produce a first stream of thermally affected asphaltene-rich fraction(s), and a second stream of vapour with means to remove the first and second streams;(c) Means for separating the second stream of vapour into a third stream of non-condensable vapour and a fourth stream of lighter liquid hydrocarbon(s) and means for removing the third and fourth streams;(d) A solvent deasphalting unit for deasphalting the first stream's thermally affected asphaltene-rich fraction by precipitating solid asphaltenes by introducing into the unit and mixing a C4-C8 solvent with the first stream also introduced into the unit, the unit processor operating at temperatures in a range between 40 and 130 Fahrenheit degrees below the critical temperature of the solvent in the unit to produce a fifth stream of heavy deasphalted oil (DAO) and a sixth stream of concentrated asphaltene as a solid at the unit's operating temperature, as a mixture of dry asphaltene solid particulate in a portion of the liquid solvent and means to remove the fifth and sixth streams;(e) With conduit, valve and mixing means to blend the fifth stream's heavy DAO and the fourth stream's liquid hydrocarbon to become the pipeline- or refinery-ready feedstock; and(f) An inertial separation unit to separate the sixth stream mixture into a seventh stream of dry, solid asphaltene particulate and an eighth stream of recovered solvent. 13. An apparatus for producing pipeline-ready or refinery-product and a dry thermally-affected asphaltene solid from heavy high feedstock using low overall ratios of solvent-to-asphaltene-rich fractions comprising: (a) a pre-heater unit for pre-heating a process fluid including the feedstock to a desired temperature, transport means for moving the process fluid into a reactor, the reactor with control means for managing: (i) temperature, within a range of 675-775° F.;(ii) in-reactor residence-time;(iii) uniform heat flux;(iv) pressure less than 50 psig; and(v) sweep gasin the reactor, to perform mild thermal cracking on the process fluid in order to produce a thermally affected asphaltene-rich fraction, and other process product to be used in the pipeline-ready or refinery-ready product;(b) transport means to move the thermally affected asphaltene-rich fraction to a solvent de-asphalting unit for mixing with a C4-C8 solvent;(c) the solvent deasphalting unit facilitates mass transfer and precipitation of asphaltenes from the thermally affected fluid and solvent mixture in a high local but low overall solvent-to-asphaltene-rich-fraction ratio process, where the asphaltenes produced are a solid particulate at the temperature ranges of the solvent deasphalting unit, which process temperature ranges being between 40 and 130° F. below the critical temperature of the C4-C8 solvent;(d) means to move the separated solids from the solvent deasphalting unit; and(e) an inertial separation unit for using inertial separation to produce the dry thermally-affected asphaltene solid particles and recover some of the solvent.
