The disclosure relates to a method for expediting warm up of an internal combustion engine cylinder block and engine oil utilizing an existing oil coolant circuit. A method for warming up an internal combustion engine with at least one cylinder, a cylinder block which is formed by an upper crankcase half mounted to a lower crankcase half, said lower crankcase half containing an oil sump which is fed, via a supply line, by a coolant jacket, an inlet side of said coolant jacket supplied in turn with oil via the oil sump by an oil pump, the method comprising: releasing oil from the coolant jacket via gravity to reduce a cooling capacity of the internal combustion engine.

The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the oil that is pumped from the oil sump is routed to oil consuming units during the engine cold start, and wherein the oil is drained directly from the coolant jacket to the oil sump via a gravity-fed drain passage. 3. The method as claimed in claim 2, wherein draining the oil from the coolant jacket reduces a cooling capacity of the coolant jacket upon a subsequent engine restart. 4. The method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the drain passage connects the coolant jacket to the oil sump without connecting to any other oil passages. 5. The method as claimed in claim 4, wherein said drain passage includes a check valve. 6. A method for an engine, comprising: during an engine cold start, heating a cylinder block of the engine by bypassing oil pumped from an oil sump around the cylinder block to prevent delivery of the oil to a coolant jacket of the cylinder block, wherein the oil pumped from the oil sump is routed to oil consuming units during the engine cold start, and where the bypassing is carried out via control of a first valve and a second valve, each of the first valve and the second valve being single output valves;responsive to the cylinder block reaching a threshold temperature, routing the oil from the oil sump, into an inlet side of the coolant jacket of the cylinder block, routing the oil out of the coolant jacket via a return line that is external to the coolant jacket, and then back to the oil sump, where the inlet and outlet sides are opposite sides of the coolant jacket: andfollowing an engine shut-off event, draining the oil from the coolant jacket to the oil sump. 7. The method of claim 6, wherein bypassing the oil that is pumped out of the oil sump around the cylinder block during the engine cold start includes closing a block coolant control valve. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the block coolant control valve is positioned in a supply line, the supply line coupled between the inlet side of the coolant jacket and a bypass line. 9. The method of claim 8, wherein an oil pump is coupled in the bypass line, and wherein the oil pump that is coupled in the bypass line pumps the oil out of the oil sump. 10. The method of claim 7, wherein bypassing the oil that is pumped out of the oil sump around the cylinder block during the engine cold start includes opening a block bypass valve. 11. The method of claim 6, wherein the oil routed to the oil consuming units during the engine cold start is then routed from the oil consuming units to the oil sump.
