The piston ring in accordance with claim 1, wherein the thickness of said each individual layer amounts to 5 nm to 4.5 μm to 60 μm. 6. The piston ring in accordance with claim 1, wherein the multilayer system is applied by means of a PVD process. 7. The piston ring in accordance with claim 1, wherein the multilayer system is applied by means of an electric arc process. 8. The piston ring in accordance with claim 1, wherein the multilayer system is applied by means of a CVD process. 9. The piston ring in accordance with claim 4, wherein the thickness of said each individual layer amounts to 8 nm to 4.5 μm, andadjoining individual layers within each periodicity having different metallic elements.
