A bone plate having a first, bone-facing surface and an opposing second surface has an elongate shaft portion and a head portion that is shorter and wider in comparison thereto, with at least one through hole extending through the bone plate from the first surface to the second surface in the shaft portion. The through hole comprises a variable-angle portion with a hole axis configured to receive a threaded head of a locking screw therein at a desired angle within a permitted range of angulation relative to the hole axis. The second surface has at least one depression which extends therein along a portion of the second surface between the side wall and the through hole, the depression extending about a periphery of the through hole.

1. A bone plate, comprising: a plate body having a first, bone-facing surface and a second surface opposing the first surface, longitudinal edges of the first and second surfaces connected to one another via lateral side walls, the plate body including an elongate shaft portion and a head portion extending from an end thereof;a plurality of through holes extending through the elongate shaft from the first surface to the second surface, each of the through holes configured to receive a bone fixation element therein;a depression extending into the second surface about at least a portion of a periphery of a first one of the through holes; anda plurality of recesses extending into the first surface from a side wall obliquely toward the through hole, the recesses being arranged in groups, each group corresponding to a respective one of the through holes and including at least two of the recesses, each of the groups being positioned along one lateral side of the corresponding through hole. 2. The bone plate of claim 1, wherein at least a first one of the groups of recesses includes first, second, third and fourth recesses, the second recess being smaller than the first and third recesses and being positioned therebetween, the fourth recess connecting the second and third recesses to one another. 3. The bone plate of claim 1, wherein the through holes are arranged offset from one another alternately along a central longitudinal axis of the plate body. 4. The bone plate of claim 3, wherein the groups of recesses are arranged to alternately extend from opposing lateral side walls. 5. The bone plate of claim 1, wherein the recesses extend into the first surface at a maximum depth at the side wall. 6. The bone plate of claim 1, wherein the depression extends about an entire periphery of the first through hole. 7. The bone plate of claim 1, wherein groups of recesses associated with adjacent through holes partly overlap one another along a length of the shaft. 8. A bone plate, comprising: a plate body having a first, bone-facing surface and a second surface opposing the first surface, longitudinal edges of the first and second surfaces connected to one another via lateral side walls, the plate body including an elongate shaft portion and a head portion extending from an end thereof;a plurality of through holes extending through the elongate shaft from the first surface to the second surface, each of the through holes configured to receive a bone fixation element therein;a depression extending into the second surface about at least a portion of a periphery of a first one of the through holes; anda plurality of recesses extending into the first surface from a side wall obliquely toward a central longitudinal axis of the plate, the recesses being arranged in groups, each group corresponding to a respective one of the through holes and including at least two of the recesses, each of the groups being positioned along one lateral side of the corresponding through hole;wherein the depression is defined by a bottom portion and an edge portion, andwherein the edge portion of the depression and at least one of the recesses of the group of recesses corresponding to the first through hole overlap. 9. The bone plate of claim 8, wherein the edge portion has a curved cross-sectional profile. 10. The bone plate of claim 8, wherein the bottom portion is substantially planar. 11. The bone plate of claim 8, wherein the edge portion and the bottom portion are connected to define a smooth surface of the depression. 12. The bone plate of claim 8, wherein a first one of the groups of recesses includes first, second, third and fourth recesses, the second recess being smaller than the first and third recesses and being positioned therebetween, the fourth recess connecting the second and third recesses. 13. The bone plate of claim 8, wherein the through holes are arranged offset from one another alternately with respect to the central longitudinal axis. 14. The bone plate of claim 13, wherein the groups of recesses are arranged to alternately extend toward the corresponding through holes from opposing lateral side walls. 15. The bone plate of claim 8, wherein the recesses extend into the first surface to a maximum depth at the side wall. 16. The bone plate of claim 8, wherein the depression extends about an entire periphery of the first through hole. 17. The bone plate of claim 8, wherein groups of recesses associated with adjacent through holes partly overlap one another along the central longitudinal axis. 18. The bone plate of claim 8, wherein the first through hole further comprises a variable angle portion overlapping with the compression hole portion, the variable angle portion being configured to receive a threaded head of a locking screw at a desired angle within a permitted range of angulation relative to a hole axis. 19. The bone plate of claim 18, wherein the variable angle portion includes an engaging structure for engaging the threaded head of the locking screw, the engaging structure being interrupted by a plurality of radially extending recesses. 20. The bone plate of claim 19, wherein the first through hole further comprises a locking hole portion including a threading extending thereabout to lockingly receive a correspondingly threaded head of a locking screw.
