The optical elements include a substrate; and an alignment facility for an optical dye connected to at least a portion of the substrate, where the alignment facility is an at least partial coating of an at least partially ordered liquid crystal material having at least a first general direction.

An ophthalmic element comprising: an ophthalmic substrate; andan alignment facility for an optical dye in direct contact with an ophthalmic substrate, the alignment facility comprising: a first set coating in direct contact with the ophthalmic substrate comprising an ordered liquid crystal material having a first general direction, andan additional set coating in direct contact with the first coating, the additional coating comprising an ordered liquid crystal material having a second general direction that is parallel to the first general direction,wherein the ophthalmic substrate is an organic ophthalmic substrate chosen from corrective lenses, non-corrective lenses, partially formed lenses, and lens blanks. 2. The ophthalmic element of claim 1 wherein the ophthalmic substrate is chosen from corrective lenses, non-corrective lenses, partially formed lenses, and lens blanks which are untinted, tinted, linearly polarizing, photochromic, or tinted-photochromic. 3. The ophthalmic element of claim 1, wherein a sum of a thickness of the first coating and a thickness of the additional coating ranges from 10 microns to 50 microns. 4. The ophthalmic element of claim 1, wherein the alignment facility comprises a plurality of additional coatings. 5. The ophthalmic element of claim 1, wherein the orientation facility has a plurality of regions and each of the plurality of regions has a general direction that is the same or different from the remaining regions and together form a design or pattern. 6. The ophthalmic element of claim 1 wherein an optical dye is in contact with the alignment facility. 7. An optical element comprising: an optical substrate;an orientation facility in direct contact with the optical substrate, the orientation facility comprising a coating comprising an ordered alignment medium comprised of photo-orientation materials selected from the group consisting of azobenzene derivatives, cinnamic acid derivatives, coumarine derivatives, ferulic acid derivatives, polyimides, and mixtures thereof; anda set alignment facility for an optical dye directly connected to the orientation facility, the alignment facility comprising: a first set coating having a thickness greater than 6 microns in direct contact with the orientation facility and comprising an ordered liquid crystal material having a first general direction, andan additional set coating in direct contact with the first coating, the additional coating comprising an ordered liquid crystal material having a second general direction that is parallel to the first general direction,wherein the optical substrate is an organic optical substrate. 8. The optical element of claim 7 wherein the optical element is chosen from ophthalmic elements, display elements, windows, mirrors, and active and passive liquid crystal cell elements. 9. The optical element of claim 7 wherein the optical substrate is chosen from untinted, tinted, linearly polarizing, photochromic, or tinted-photochromic optical substrates. 10. The optical element of claim 7 wherein an optical dye is in contact with the ordered liquid crystal material. 11. An optical element comprising: an optical substrate; anda set alignment facility to in direct contact with the optical substrate, the alignment facility comprising: a first set coating comprising a phase separating polymer system comprising a matrix phase comprising a liquid crystal material that is ordered in a first general direction, and a guest phase comprising a liquid crystal material having a second general direction distributed within the matrix phase, wherein the second general direction is parallel to the first general direction, andan additional set coating in direct contact with the first coating, the additional coating comprising an ordered liquid crystal material having a general direction that is parallel to the first general direction and the second general direction,wherein the optical substrate is an organic optical substrate. 12. The optical element of claim 11 wherein the optical element is chosen from ophthalmic elements, display elements, windows, mirrors, and active and passive liquid crystal cell elements. 13. The optical element of claim 11 wherein the optical substrate is chosen from untinted, tinted, linearly polarizing, photochromic, or tinted-photochromic optical substrates. 14. The optical element of claim 11 wherein the first coating has a thickness ranging from 1 micron to 100 microns. 15. The optical element of claim 11 wherein an optical dye is in contact with the alignment facility.
