A system, method, and computer-readable medium for request routing based on client location information are provided. A content delivery network service provider receives a DNS query from a client computing device. The DNS query corresponds to a resource identifier for requested content from the client computing device. The content delivery network service provider transmits an alternative resource identifier in response to the client computing device DNS query. The alternative resource identifier is selected as a function of client location information. The client location information is obtained from information corresponding to a mapping of at least partial IP addresses to known locations. The client computing device then issues a second DNS query to the same content delivery network service provider. The content delivery network service provider can then either resolve the second DNS query or transmit another alternative resource identifier.

1. A computer-implemented method comprising: as implemented by one or more computing devices configured with specific executable instructions: obtaining a domain name system (DNS query from a client computing device at a first DNS server, wherein the DNS query corresponds to a requested resource associated with an original resource identifier provided by a content provider and wherein the first DNS server corresponds to a content delivery network (CDN) service;obtaining a query Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with the DNS query at the first DNS server;determining a location-based identifier associated with the query IP address based on a confidence factor; andprocessing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor, wherein processing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor includes assigning a location-based identifier associated with the first DNS server if the confidence factor does not exceed a threshold value. 2. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the location-based identifier is obtained from a data store containing query IP address to location-based identifier mapping entries. 3. The method as recited in claim 2, wherein the data store contains query IP address to location-based identifier mappings only for entries exceeding a minimum threshold value corresponding to the confidence factor. 4. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein processing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor includes determining whether the confidence factor exceeds a threshold value. 5. The method as recited in claim 4, wherein processing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor further includes selecting a network point of presence based on the location-based identifier if the confidence factor exceeds the threshold value. 6. The method as recited in claim 4, wherein processing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor further includes: if the confidence factor exceeds the threshold value: determining a destination identifier associated with the DNS query, wherein the destination identifier is determined based on the location-based identifier; andselecting a network point of presence (POP) associated with the CDN service based on the destination identifier. 7. The method as recited in claim 6, wherein processing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor further includes: determining whether the first DNS server is authoritative to the DNS query based on the selected network POP; andif the first DNS server is determined to be authoritative: selecting a cache component for providing content associated with the original resource identifier; andtransmitting information identifying the selected cache component. 8. A system comprising: a first network point of presence (POP) associated with a content delivery network (CDN) service provider, wherein the first network POP includes a first domain name system (DNS) server that receives a DNS query from a client computing device, wherein the DNS query corresponds to a requested resource associated with a first resource identifier provided by a content provider, and wherein the first DNS server in the first network POP comprises at least one computing device associated with a memory and is operative to: obtain a query Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with the DNS query at the first DNS server;determine a location-based identifier associated with the query IP address based on a confidence factor; andprocess the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor, wherein processing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor includes assigning a location-based identifier associated with the first DNS server if the confidence factor does not exceed a threshold value. 9. The system as recited in claim 8, wherein the location-based identifier is obtained from the memory and wherein the memory contains query IP address to location-based identifier mapping entries. 10. The system as recited in claim 9, wherein the memory contains query IP address to location-based identifier mappings only for entries exceeding a minimum threshold value corresponding to the confidence factor. 11. The system as recited in claim 8, wherein processing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor includes determining whether the confidence factor exceeds a threshold value. 12. The system as recited in claim 11, wherein processing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor further includes selecting a network POP based on the location-based identifier if the confidence factor exceeds the threshold value. 13. The system as recited in claim 11, wherein processing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor further includes: if the confidence factor exceeds the threshold value: determining a destination identifier associated with the DNS query, wherein the destination identifier is determined based on the location-based identifier; andselecting a network POP associated with the CDN service provider based on the destination identifier. 14. The system as recited in claim 13, wherein processing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor further includes: determining whether the first DNS server is authoritative to the DNS query based on the selected network POP; andif the first DNS server is determined to be authoritative: selecting a cache component for providing content associated with the first resource identifier; andtransmitting information identifying the selected cache component. 15. A non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium comprising one or more computer-executable components, the one or more computer-executable components configured to be executed by one or more processors of a computer system to cause the computer system to: obtain a domain name system (DNS) query from a client computing device at a first DNS server, wherein the DNS query corresponds to a requested resource associated with an original resource identifier provided by a content provider and wherein the first DNS server corresponds to a content delivery network (CDN) service;obtain a query Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with the DNS query at the first DNS server; determine a location-based identifier associated with the query IP address based on a confidence factor; andprocess the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor, wherein processing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor includes selecting a network point of presence (POP) based on the location-based identifier if the confidence factor exceeds the threshold value. 16. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 15, wherein the location-based identifier is obtained from a data store containing query IP address to location-based identifier mapping entries. 17. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 16, wherein the data store contains query IP address to location-based identifier mappings only for entries exceeding a minimum threshold value corresponding to the confidence factor. 18. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 15, wherein processing the DNS query based on evaluation of the confidence factor includes determining whether the confidence factor exceeds a threshold value.
